Patricia Heaton is back on television again. She was funny in "Everybody Loves Raymond" and even better as Frankie Heck, the married mother of three in "The Middle." Heaton is Carol Kenney, a science teacher who decided a second career as a doctor, her lifelong dream. Now it's not the best series but Heaton makes it work. They could work on the writing and developing the other cast members and characters as well. It's always fun to watch Heaton, she's a television veteran by now.

That would be me, if I were to become a doctor!

Warning: Spoilers
I always say, "I should have been a doctor!" I have all this knowledge, and love of medical facts, but at my age, would never do anything toward earning a career in medicine. Watching this pilot episode, I really felt as though I was watching myself, if I had become a doctor! Carol's character, with all her good intentions, inserts her personal stories, funny expressions and irrelevant facts, into every conversation, trailing off randomly, from what she was supposed to be discussing. I confess that I do that, frustrating everyone around me, when all they want from me is a simple and short response! So I watched this episode, feeling like I was watching me, if I were to become a doctor, and laughed like crazy! I was so entertained by this episode, that I watched it twice! Kudos to the writers and actors! This is the comic relief that I need in my life! I look forward to every new episode!
Doesn't help itself.

Carol's second act, Patricia Heaton's bid to have a third long-running sitcom, following 9 year stints on both 'Everybody Loves Raymond' and 'The Middle - not forgetting a memorable 1 year stint on the sadly cancelled too soon 'Back to You'.
Unfortunately though this pilot shows why this would not be the case.
It's not helped by its own premise, covering very similar ground that 'Scrubs' did extremely well, and that much like many a sitcom centred around a big name, the supporting characters are all very 2D - typical character tropes that have worked before.
It has its moments, it obviously was going for a blend of comedy and pathos, but other than a nice turn from Heaton, this pilot showed it to be a very middle of the road affair.
If this was the best sitcom script that came across her desk as a potential project I'd be amazed.

LOVE Patricia Heaton in Everybody Loves Raymond and she was well deserving of her multiple Emmy Awards for that show, but this show just doesn't have it from the plot to the writing to the acting.
The supporting cast is especially awful! And like many others who say the same, the laugh track is absolutely annoying. When you have to be reminded where to laugh, it's a tell-tale sign it's not a good show.
I watched the first two episodes and I'm out. I'm going back to watching the reruns of ELR which is far superior and more enjoyable to watch than this.
Either scrap the current plot and start over or simply cancel and move on.
