It is always a joy to find shows you began to watch with zero expectations, and they always end up being good watches, surprisingly. A show that can keep you watching even if you have no clue how it will move forward is proof of good filmmaking. It’s been a while since a decent comedy drama came out on Netflix, and Bros is one of them. This Netflix Israeli original is set in Jerusalem and shares the story of two friends who run a bar. Created by Guy Amir and Hanan Savyon, the show was released on the streaming platform on April 19, 2024.
Bros is all about Pini and Nisso, who have been friends since childhood and currently run a bar in the city of Jerusalem. They have been marred with several issues on the personal and professional front. Pini is married to Alma, and they have been trying to...

The Batman was a refreshing change in the turbulent DC Extended Universe. Taking a different approach from earlier DC and Batman movies, this 2022 flick starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayn is essentially a noir-style mystery that highlights the superhero’s detective abilities in addition to his physical prowess.
Not only did it create a bleak new Gotham City, but it also featured some of the best performances from Colin Farrell (The Penguin), Jeffrey Wright (James Gordon), Zoë Kravitz (Catwoman), and of course, Pattinson (Batman).
However, the film was met with some skepticism following Christopher Wozniak, a screenwriter and former freelance artist for DC Comics, filing a lawsuit against Warner Bros. for allegedly stealing the story from his script, The Ultimate Riddle.
Robert Pattinson and Zoë Kravitz in a still from The Batman
Well, the plaintiff has not been pleased with the verdict, as the US Judge ruled that Matt Reeves’ helmed flick was not plagiarized.

It's been a tough stretch for theatrical comedy over the last couple of years, save for a couple of hit rom-coms in "The Lost City" and "Ticket to Paradise." Beyond that, comedy has largely had to fight for scraps at the box office, with even Billy Eichner's well-liked "Bros" bombing in downright disconcerting fashion. But as the fall season approaches, MGM and Orion are hoping to break through with "Bottoms," an irreverent and wildly acclaimed comedy that stars Rachel Sennott and "The Bear" breakout Ayo Edebiri.
It's difficult to find comparisons for a movie like this in terms of a wide-release theatrical comedy. Having seen the movie, I can confidently say it's wildly original and straight-up bonkers. I would look at "Bros" doing just $14.7 million worldwide as the floor in a worst-case scenario. Oddly, I would look at something like "Barbarian," which had that "you need to see this...

The annual report from USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative found that Universal’s “Bros” accounted for 80% of the transgender characters in the 100 top-grossing movies of 2022.
According to the study, just 87 of 4,169 speaking or named characters (2.1%) in 2022 movies were LGBTQ+. Of that number, five characters identified as transgender and four of them appeared in “Bros.”
Written by and starring Billy Eichner, the film made history as the first gay rom-com to be given a wide theatrical release by a major studio and featured a cast almost exclusively made up of LGBTQ actors. The film was released in September 2022 and despite disappointing box office returns (“Bros” earned just $14.7 million worldwide), qualified under the Annenberg researchers’ criteria.
Authored by Dr. Stacy L. Smith, Dr. Katherine Pieper and Sam Wheeler, the study assessed a total of 69,858 speaking characters covering the 1,600 top films from 2007 to 2022, examining the inclusion factors of gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+ identity and characters with disabilities,...

In Red, White & Royal Blue, an unexpected fling goes from playful secret to intimate love story for Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), the first son of the United States, and Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine), Britain’s spare.
Adapted for the screen by co-writers Ted Malawer and Matthew López (who pulled double duty as director) from Casey McQuiston’s new, wildly popular adult best-seller of the same name, the film arrives just a year after a slew of notable (and often comedic) queer romance releases — including Fire Island, Bros, My Policeman and fellow Prime Video title Anything’s Possible — and amid several anticipated 2023 titles like Bottoms, Joy Ride and Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe.
With the arrival of these films and Red, White & Royal Blue comes fuller depictions of not just queer identity and life, but also intimacy. It’s a topic that has historically been taboo on U.

How does one say goodbye after 20 years? That’s the lofty task that The Venture Bros. faces with this concluding movie-length finale, Radiant is the Blood of the Baboon Heart, and it does so with nerdy, passionate grace. The Venture Bros. has produced seven seasons, but it made its Adult Swim premiere back in 2003 when the then-fledgling network only had five original programs to its name and superhero parodies were niche, not the new normal. Now, it celebrates its swan song during a time when most people will view this series finale feature film on Max, sandwiched between endless superhero content. The animation industry and television as a whole have greatly transformed since The Venture Bros.’s debut, yet Radiant is the Blood of the Baboon Heart proves that The Venture Bros.

As the SAG-AFTRA strike begins its second week, there’s no indication that negotiations will resume between that guild or the WGA with AMPTP any time soon. And that’s bad news for studios, as actors on strike will begin not only to affect the production of new work, but the premieres of upcoming schedule films. May a studio pull off a successful premiere of a tentpole movie without its cast present?

Donna Langley is a dame in waiting no more.
The veteran movie executive, with deep ties to Hollywood filmmakers and a knack for shepherding blockbusters to the screen, ascended to NBCUniversal’s content throne on Thursday, one of the big winners in a sweeping reorganization made by Comcast president Mike Cavanagh, who oversees NBCUniversal.
In her new role as chief content officer, Langley won’t just be overseeing Universal’s slate of films. She will also take ownership of its TV and streaming creative strategy. It’s an elevation that many industry players saw as inevitable – after all, how much longer could the company keep the in-demand executive without expanding her portfolio?
However, that also shortchanges Langley’s talent for C-suite survival, one that’s seen her withstand mergers and sales, as well as a revolving door of leaders and associates such as Ron Meyer, Adam Fogelson and Jeff Shell,...

Some names, once viewed on a marquee or YouTube ad, tend to draw a specific audience ranging from real fans to, “Oh yes, that guy.“ I could put the Duplass brothers, Mark and Jay, into both of these categories, with a lengthy filmography largely encompassing projects their company Duplass Brothers Productions has spearheaded, such as 2010’s “Cyrus” and “Jeff, Who Lives at Home”; Mark, in particular, has emerged as the higher profile of the two, consistently delivering as an actor in diverse roles ranging from horror (“Creep”) to TV comedy (“The League”) offbeat humor and more. “The Long Long Night,” another Mark Duplass vehicle, would likely fall into the latter category; originating from show creator/co-star Barret O’Brien, the six-episode series depicts the falling out between two former best friends, Pete (Duplass) and Carroll (O’Brien) and the night that kicked it off, told through black and white footage of...

Way back in 2018, the "Three Identical Strangers" documentary shocked viewers around the world as it told the story of three triplets who were separated at birth. The film chronicled the journey of Robert Shafran, Eddy Galland, and David Kellman as they discovered that they were identical triplets who were placed with different adoptive families as part of a scientific experiment. Now, their story is being turned into a limited TV series under Sony Pictures Television, with Ben Stiller in talks to star as all three brothers.

2022 was something of a landmark year for mainstream queer cinema. Films like "Fire Island," "Crush," and "Anything's Possible" painted a far more authentic and inclusive mosaic of the 2Slgbtq+ community than the movies with mostly white cisgender casts -- many of which, as moving as they are, feature straight actors playing queer characters -- that have come before them, while at the same time broadening their focus beyond the typical queer issues and "tragic" stories Hollywood typically fixates on. Of course, there's always going to be room for fresh stories centered on plain ol' white queer guys, and 2022 had us covered there too, with romantic dramedies like "Bros" and "Spoiler Alert."
The latter movie, which flew under a lot of people's radars judging by the box office returns, is based on Michael Ausiello's 2017 memoir "Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies" and explores the real-life romance between its author (played by...

Channing Dungey spent her first two months at what was then simply Warner Media shadowing her predecessor, Peter Roth. She was coming off a short stint at Netflix, which followed a much longer stint at Disney, and Roth had two-plus decades of experience running television’s most prolific studio to impart.
“I like to say I was auditing Professor Roth’s course,” she says over a late lunch in January at Superba Hollywood, recounting how she’d follow him from Zoom room to Zoom room, taking it all in, as 2020 drew to a close.
A few things became very clear, very quickly. The first was that trying to do the job in the style that Roth did it was a fool’s errand. Though the two share a passion for storytelling, his translated to larger-than-life pitches — even virtually, she says, “It’s like the Ringling Bros. circus” — and a penchant for bear hugs.

Mindy Kaling's "Velma" is almost here, following the bespectacled mystery master in her high school years, before Mystery Inc. ever investigated its first ghost. The series' trailer has dropped and it makes the show look plenty spooky (with some gross gratuitous violence that had to be censored), while also being pretty darn funny. Featuring Kaling as Velma, Constance Wu as Daphne, Sam Richardson as Norville/Shaggy, and Glenn Howerton as Fred, "Velma" is clearly an adult take on the children's classic with some crass humor and more mature themes. It looks like one part "Venture Bros." and one part "Harley Quinn," so there's potential for "Velma" to be a rude, raucous ride like its animated predecessors.
The series is set to premiere on January 12, 2023 on HBO Max, and the final trailer has given us one last tiny taste of the frightening fun to come. Take a look below, and...

It's been a slow climb out of the hole that 2020 dug for the box office, as the pandemic straight-up upended the movie business as we knew it. The good news is that 2022 brought us a great many hits, such as "Top Gun: Maverick," "The Batman," and "Smile," accounting for an increase of more than 80 in ticket sales compared to this same time last year. It's mostly good news. However, the word "mostly" is doing quite a bit of heavy lifting there, if we're being totally honest.
Indeed, even in a year where every movie in the top 10 earned at least 400 million worldwide, Hollywood also suffered a number of high-profile flops that are indicative of the state of the industry right now. Everything from Oscar bait to star-heavy dramas to blockbusters that once seemed like a sure thing didn't live up to box office expectations. Even R-rated comedies with reasonable budgets failed.

Feeling overwhelmed by the sheer amount of content to catch up on this winter awards season? That’s because you’re not wrong, there is a ton to sift through. As the Golden Globes prepares to reveal their nominations on Monday, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has put together a final tally of TV series and motion pictures that were eligible for awards consideration this year — and Variety has those numbers.
According to the HFPA, there were 211 series eligible for best TV drama in 2022, and 127 series in the running for best musical or comedy. In the race for limited series, anthology series or TV movie, there were 121 contenders. (That’s a total of 459 programs.)
On the film side, the most recent tally for best motion picture saw 170 for drama, 83 for musical or comedy, 20 in animated and 115 in the running for non-English language. Add it up, and that’s 388 films.

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
After the success of “Uncut Gems,” filmmaker brothers Josh and Benny Safdie and their star Adam Sandler have a lot to live up to with their next collaboration. The trio announced in October they were reuniting for an untitled film for Netflix.
While details about the project are under wraps, Sandler did tell me Monday at the Gotham Awards that he’s going to have a much “different look” than he’s ever had. “I can’t say that I’m gonna look that handsome in it,” Sandler said. “It’s not a handsome moment…It’s gonna be tough.”
As for the storyline, Sandler would only say, “They’re working hard. Every time I talk to them they say they are working hand.”
Sandler starred in “Uncut Gems” as a Howard Ratner, a shady New York City jeweler with a gambling addiction.

Peacock has announced that the groundbreaking romantic comedy Bros — the first from a major studio to center on two gay men — will begin streaming exclusively on the platform on December 2nd.
The film directed by Nicholas Stoller is a smart, swoony and heartfelt story about gay men — played by Billy Eichner and Luke Macfarlane—maybe, possibly, probably, stumbling towards love. Maybe. They’re both very busy. Its cast also includes Ts Madison, Miss Lawrence, Symone, Guillermo Diaz, Guy Branum, Monica Raymund, Jim Rash, Harvey Fierstein, Bowen Yang, Amanda Bearse, Dot-Marie Jones, and many more.
Eichner and Stoller penned the script. Stoller also produced alongside Judd Apatow and Josh Church, with Eichner exec producing.
While Bros world premiered to critical acclaim at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival, it had a disappointing showing upon its September theatrical release via Universal Pictures, grossing just over 14.6M worldwide. Its co-writer and star Eichner made history with Bros,...

Since the Grammys award all of the recording arts, not just music, many categories are not music-related at all, and sometimes non-musicians even sneak into musical categories, whether it is due to changing career paths or because of their contributions to music from movies or shows. Here are just a few celebrities not commonly known for their musical abilities who are in the running for Grammys this year.

The future of the DC Extended Universe (Dceu) could be described as chaotic at best. While their chief competitor, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is helmed by President Kevin Feige, the Dceu doesn't have that kind of leadership. Things at Warner Bros. are even more uncertain because of the recent Discovery merger and a change in direction from Discovery CEO David Zaslav, but it appears that there is some good news on the horizon for fans of these tentpole comic book franchises.
The Hollywood Reporter took a hard look at the future of the Dceu, and revealed that both Warner Bros. and Henry Cavill are trying to come together to create a sequel to 2013's "Man of Steel." /Film can independently confirm that conversations are currently happening to get Cavill back as Superman, which is pretty exciting news.

Primetime Emmy and SAG winning actress Debra Messing is in advance talks to join Warner Bros mob drama Wise Guys in the role of Bobbie, the faithful wife of Robert De Niro kingpin Frank Costello, Deadline has learned.
Messing recently starred as herself in Billy Eichner’s critically acclaimed LGBTQ romantic comedy Bros which received an A CinemaScore.
Wise Guys is a period piece that follows the story of Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, a pair of Italian Americans running two separate crime families during the mid-20th century. Genovese tried and failed to assassinate Costello in 1957, though the latter wound up taking his leave from the mob after being injured during the attempt on his life. De Niro is reportedly playing both roles.
Messing played Grace Adler for 246 episodes on NBC’s Emmy Award-winning comedy series Will & Grace, which returned to the network in 2017 with the entire original...

‘Bros’ Director, Producer Open Up About “Confusing” Opening Weekend and the Fierce Debate It Sparked
Click here to read the full article.
When buzz started building earlier this year for Bros, the first LGBTQ romantic comedy released theatrically by a Hollywood studio, it’s safe to assume that no one involved with the film anticipated the debate that would engulf social media and the industry in the wake of its release.
In a perfect world, the dialogue might have remained focused on the sterling reviews, with filmmaker Nicholas Stoller’s comedy currently holding an 89 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, or the A CinemaScore, or the movie featuring only Lgtbq performers in the main roles. Indeed, there didn’t appear to be anything particularly controversial about the premise of Bros, which tells the story of podcaster Bobby, played by Billy Eichner (who co-wrote the script) as a lone wolf convinced he’ll never find the right match until he falls for beefy Aaron (Luke Macfarlane), who...

Billy Eichner is calling out straight people for not seeing “Bros” in theaters.
The Judd Apatow-produced romantic comedy opened to 4.8 million at the box office after premiering at TIFF and receiving strong reviews. However, lead star and co-writer Eichner is bemoaning the lack of audiences showing up in theaters as “homophobic,” especially in “certain parts of the country.”
“Everyone who Isn’T a homophobic weirdo should go see Bros tonight! You will have a blast! And it is special and uniquely powerful to see this particular story on a big screen, esp for queer folks who don’t get this opportunity often. I love this movie so much. Go Bros!!!,” Eichner tweeted.

Universal’s “Bros,” the LGBTQ rom-com that was positioned to help lift a miserable September box office, has proven to be the latest big-screen disappointment with an underwhelming 4.8 million opening weekend.
What went wrong? After its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, critics heaped praise on the film — which has a 91 Rotten Tomatoes score — especially as the first rom-com released by a major studio with a principal cast consisting entirely of LGBTQ actors. The film, produced by Judd Apatow and directed by Nicholas Stoller from a screenplay he co-wrote with lead star Billy Eichner, also won over moviegoers who did show up, earning the film an A on CinemaScore and an 80 positive rating on Comscore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak.

Despite glowing reviews and a robust marketing campaign for the LGBTQ romantic comedy “Bros,” the Billy Eichner-fronted film tumbled at the box office on opening weekend. And Eichner – who also co-wrote the film with director Nicholas Stoller – puts the blame on straight people not showing up.
“Rolling Stone already has ‘Bros’ on the list of the best comedies of the 21st century. What’s also true is that at one point a theater chain called Universal and said they were pulling the trailer because of the gay content (Uni convinced them not to),” Eichner said on Twitter. “America, f—- yeah, etc etc.”
“Bros” was crafted as a Hollywood romantic comedy with two men as the romantic leads, and was marketed as the first major studio film with members of the LGBTQ+ community in every major role on screen.

Much of the discussion around the release of the Billy Eichner-starring, Judd Apatow-produced romantic comedy Bros has been about the semantics of its historic nature.
Yes, it’s one of the first major studio movies starring two gay leads played by two openly gay actors. Yes, it’s part of a small, but growing handful of LGBTQ-inclusive films upending the mainstream rom-com genre. But it’s another detail — frequently thrown out during the film’s press tour as a sign of its groundbreaking nature — that perhaps makes the film most notable. And that’s its all, openly LGBTQ+ cast.
It was a decision, star and co-writer Eichner told The Hollywood Reporter during the film’s New York red carpet premiere, believed was important from the pitch.

Paramount’s “Smile” debuted to a sizzling 22 million this weekend, easily topping the domestic box office. The horror film beat out the weekend’s other new wide release, Universal’s LGBTQ romantic comedy “Bros,” which landed in fourth place with a paltry 4.8 million bow.
“Smile” ranks as one of the better original horror openings of the year, beating out 20th Century Studios’ “Barbarian” (10 million) and Sony’s “The Invitation” (7 million). As the box office enters October, the horror genre will continue to take center stage with Universal’s “Halloween Ends” releasing in two weeks and hoping to cash in on the seasonal thirst for thrills and chills.
The box office result for “Smile” is a frighteningly good haul, seeing as it cost a measly 17 million to produce and had originally been seen as a streaming release.

Nick Stoller and Billy Eichner’s “Bros” has plenty going for it beyond its allegedly boundary-breaking elements — Eichner, who co-wrote the film and stars in it, called it “the first gay rom-com ever released by a major studio” earlier this year, which is kind of true, but also not at all essential for enjoying the film on its own merits — and should (hopefully) prove to be box office catnip for audiences starved for funny, sexy, sweet romantic comedies.
“Bros” stars an entirely Lgtbq+ cast and centers on Eichner as a jaded podcast host who falls for Hallmark Channel alum Luke Macfarlane; the cast also includes Harvey Fierstein, Bowen Yang, Symone, Miss Lawrence, Guy Branum, Guillermo Diaz, Amanda Bearse, and Ts Madison.

Let’s get the historical housekeeping out of the way first: “Bros” is the first gay rom-com to be released by a major studio, an accomplishment with its share of codicils — there have been other queer films released by majors but they weren’t romantic comedies, there have been LGBTQ+ films of all stripes released by studios, but always by their indie shingle.
That’s a lot of historical baggage for any one film to have to carry, but it matters that the film succeeds at the rom-com just as much as it deserves notice for its narrowly defined status as “first.” Star and co-writer Billy Eichner spins a lot of plates here, crafting a hilarious and heartfelt film that also acknowledges the challenging and often hidden history of queer people in American society.

The most important revelation in my interview with Ts Madison wasn’t about something that occurred on the set of her new film “Bros.” It wasn’t related to her inclusion in Beyoncé’s celebrated house music album “Renaissance,” either. No, somehow, the queer community icon, reality television force, and social media star is not repped by an agent. That needs to change.

Billy Eichner’s “Bros” is bowing out of the Middle East.
Universal Pictures confirmed the first R-rated gay rom-com ever made by a major studio will not debut in Middle East markets “due to cultural and commercial reasons,” per a source. Billy Eichner stars in the Universal Pictures rom-com as the director of an LGBTQ history museum who falls for a hunky attorney (Luke Macfarlane). After scoring positive reactions at TIFF, Variety was on the movie’s premiere red carpet in New York City Tuesday night to ask if a potential sequel could be in the works.
“Billy and I’ve been joking about [the possibilities], I’m not sure what it would be,” Macfarlane told Variety. “The truth is, in any relationship, those early months are the best. And then the reality of life sets in and you got to figure out how you’re going to spend all that time with somebody.”
He continued, “I trust the brilliance of Billy Eichner to come up with something clever for three years down the road.”
Macfarlane hopes a second movie would include musical scenes.

He continued, “I trust the brilliance of Billy Eichner to come up with something clever for three years down the road.”
Macfarlane hopes a second movie would include musical scenes.

“Bros” writer and star Billy Eichner brought back his popular comedic segment “Billy on the Street” with special guest Paul Rudd as a promotional video to round up crowds of straight people and convince them to go see his movie, hitting theaters starting Sept. 30.
The first pair of men the comedian and actor approach react positively to unexpectedly seeing Rudd, but when Eichner informs them that “there’s a lot of gay sex in” his movie and one of the men says “whoa,” the two hosts swiftly move along.
Later, Eichner tells another stranger on the street, “Sir, Paul Rudd demands that you see ‘Bros,’” and the man is a little too game. “I’m in,” he says, before asking when it’s playing and if Rudd can physically carry him to the theater.
When one woman tries to wiggle out of the video by claiming she has a work meeting,...

Steven Spielberg’s autobiographical coming-of-age story “The Fabelmans” took home the Toronto International Film Festival’s people’s choice award, providing a major boost to its awards season chances.
TIFF’s people’s choice award is one of the most reliable predictors of eventual Oscar success. In past years, winners such as “Green Book” and “Nomadland” went on to capture the best picture prize at the Academy Awards. Other recent recipients, including “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” “La La Land” and “Jojo Rabbit,” were best picture nominees and major forces during awards season.
Since the people’s choice category was created in 1978, seven recipients went on to win best picture at the Oscars — five of which were in the past 20 years.
“As I said on stage the other night, ‘Above all, I’m glad I brought this film to Toronto!’ This is the most personal film I’ve ever made,...

Warner Bros. Discovery Chief Financial Officer Gunnar Wiedenfels provided a few hints on Tuesday about how the entertainment giant envisions relaunching its streaming services under one flagship platform next year: Don’t expect to see any marquee names like Food Network vanish when the service rolls out.
Wiedenfels told investors at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology conference in San Francisco that the company has no plans to come up with generic verticals within the streaming platform that dumps content into buckets separating films from reality programming. Instead, Wbd will leverage all of the brand names as a way to keep consumers happy — and fuel streaming subscriber growth internationally where some of the television content is already broadcast on linear television.
No, he didn’t provide any details on what Chief Executive David Zaslav is thinking about for a name for the combined streaming service that will rival Netflix and Disney+...

The Fabelmans had its premiere on Saturday evening at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival.
The film was met with a standing ovation at the Princess of Wales theater and rave reviews by critics. Read The Hollywood Reporter’s review Here. Oscar pundit and THR’s executive editor of awards Scott Feinberg writes in his wrap-up, “As for the film itself? It is, at least for now, the one to beat in the best picture race.”
Variety’s Peter Debruge says: “The master of escapist entertainment gets personal in this 150-minute self-portrait, crafting a loving homage to the complicated relationship with his parents that has informed so much of his work.”
Indiewire’s Eric Kohn states: “While Spielberg made history last year as the only director to receive Best Director nominations across six decades, he has never received a nomination for screenwriting. The movie is positioned to elbow its way into...

If any movie deserved its hyperbolic standing ovation on the festival circuit this year, Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” was it. When the director took the stage of the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto, he received the thunderous response to more than 50 years of filmmaking, not just the passion project that recounts the beginning of that journey.
Many prominent directors have made personal projects about their youth in recent times, from Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast” to James Gray’s “Armageddon Time” and Sam Mendes’ “Empire of Light,” but only Spielberg could have made a movie with such an explicit relationship to his own celebrated filmography, and the warm reception is likely to follow him through awards season.
Spielberg’s career has gone through many phases, but “The Fabelmans” stands out his most contained and intimate movie, a semi-autobiographical drama about ambitious teen Sammy Fabelman (newcomer Gabriel Labelle) as he discovers...
