Ever since the Mindy Project, I've been waiting for Adam to find a hit show. This show has a chance but I'm sorry to say his wife is not the move and the parents are ok. They need better writers.

How did this pilot get greenlit?
MondayMorningQB7 February 2020
The show really looked to have potential, but it just fell flat in reality. The parents are tirelessly overplayed to the point where you just do not care about the characters.
I think the series would have worked better if they had 'Fran' as a widow who lost her money/savings from medical bills treating her husband before he passed away. At least there would be an ounce of sympathy for the character and a hope that she rebounds. She would become the intruding mother/mother-in-law who, through some well written plot lines would help solve the crisis of the day for the family and bring a warmth to the overall story.

Painful to Watch

It truly was painful to watch these two actors who I love, Fran Drescher and Steven Weber, in the tired, old-sitcom. Why is Steven Weber speaking like an old Jewish man from a NYC deli? The writing is so bad. I waited for a rim shot after every line. I had to shut it off when they showed up on their date. Plus I thought the wife was annoying.
When are the networks going to realize that this type of comedy was over in the 80's? I wish I liked it but no.
Terrible!

Who greenlit this garbage?!
The show would almost be watchable if it wasn't for Dave's parents (Fran Dresher & her on-screen husband) repeatedly being complete irresponsible morons! You could easily replace most of their dialogue with "Look at this foolish thing I'm doing (or have done) and I don't care!" The premise of the show could work if you cared for or felt sorry for the parents. But they're unredeemably awful!
The rest of the characters fall into lazy sitcom tropes. Dave's sister for example. The younger sibling that doesn't have things completely together, blames the parents for her issues but is sometimes the voice of reason.
I really wanted to like this show. It mostly made me frustrated and angry while watching it. I see a quick cancellation in its future!

Can't be this bad without trying to be bad.
iamperps8 February 2020
I feel like NBC was trying to make the worst sitcom ever. Maybe it's just a big joke we all didn't know about? I feel bad for these actors. Literally the definition of the worst sitcom ever made. All the bad things that make a bad single cam sitcom bad. I feel bad for the sound engineer that had to add the canned laugh track, I assume the producers just kept telling them to add more and more. Literally the laugh is added in spots there is nothing to laugh at. I'll be surpised and shocked if it makes it past 3 episodes. If so, I give up on NBC sitcoms. There really hasn't been anything good since HIMYM.
It had a rough start for sure

I'll admit, the beginning had me saying "what?" Just like everyone. Having watched the first 11 episodes, it really has found it's footing and will probably continue, if it gets renewed. This show has so much potential and a pretty great cast! Obviously, this show is brand new and I'd hate to see it not at least be given a second seaon to really show it's worth but people don't have the energy to see a show through. Give it a try past the first episode and have your own opinion.

Oh wow. What is happening here. I watched the entire pilot and I was so confused... like how did this make it to air? Who screwed up along the way? Writing? Directing? Acting? Producing? Editing? There is no way someone somewhere didn't make a horrible mistake. HUGE Adam pally fan which is why I tuned in. Even the promos leading up to it was very cringy. I never thought I could actually look at someone completely differently. Abby Elliot I never had a problem with but her acting was so over the top insane I couldn't stop watching. Why is this show happening?! Can we all start from scratch or just pull the plug ASAP?!! The laugh track needs to go, the acting of everyone needs to tone down and the writing and directing needs to be taken over by professionals. The premise I maybe could have been behind if they executed perfectly.
Watch past episode 4!

The first few episodes feel forced and uncomfortable but somewhere around #4 the actors finally start to get into it and the pacing hits the mark. This is a show that grows. If you stick with it, you won't be disappointed.
TV Studios Must Have Limited Ideas
fleck05IMDB1 April 2020
When SEAL Team came out a came out a couple other military shows came out at the same time. This show comes out (which is okay - if you like the leads you'll like it) and CBS has the same concept called "Broke."
Maybe Hollywood should spend more time coming up with original shows and less time preaching politics? Just a thought.
HORRIBLE CLICHED DREK
junkmailvenice7 February 2020
Wow this show is lazy and bad. What sounds like a simple, albeit tired idea, somehow receives the most stupid convoluted set up. Fran is just playing the same character she always does. The jokes are lame. Everyone looks uncomfortable. I'd feel bad for Adam Paley but he's a producer on the show, so he only has himself to blame.

Dated and Unfunny
matukonyc118 February 2020
As I watched the pilot episode, I thought, "Surely, this is a parody of a 1990s three-camera sitcom with a laugh track," and I kept waiting for them to break character or something, but the tired old jokes just kept coming and coming. I cannot believe that in this day and age anyone green-lit a sitcom so trite, shallow, and nonsensical. Why are 35-year-olds with young kids presented as if they're empty-nesters? Why do all of these people live in Stamford, Connecticut and yet are now bankrupt from knee surgery? How did so many talented people end up in this turkey?
Simply Not Good

Nothing Unique here
mmevanille-530978 February 2020
Full House/ Fuller house style situational comedy but with a louder laugh track and seemingly worse writers.
Its not as bad as some reviews on here suggest. The thing is with reviewing, is that you should review from the perspective of that particular genre, and how it compares with others of the similar genre... not just whether or not you 'like' it. Reviewing according to personal taste is not objective, and its unfair to the show.
The issue with this style of show such as Indebted, is that it has been done before. Thousands of times. There is nothing really special about it with the exception of seeing Fran Drescher on screen again.
For those who like mindless easy watching shows, maybe get a couple of smiles per episode, then its worth giving it a go. But for those with limited time wanting quality shows and comedy ( of which there is an abundant these days ), then its probably best to skip it.

Warning: Spoilers
Over acting, unbelievable situations, awful writing, and the pilot ends with the main couple apologizing for being upset that his parents posted a video of his wife nude online.
I only watched the pilot... But can't imagine this is going to get much better... we'll see.

It's not really an 8/10 for me, it's more of a 6/10 but I thought a higher rating from me would give it a better average rating.
Indebted made me smile, then giggle, and at episode 3 I actually laughed out loud.
It's simple humor, nothing that needs to be taken seriously, IT'S A COMEDY. Yes, it's sad when people lose everything but this is not a drama, so why should they be devastated and struggle? Since when does everything has to be politically correct?
All the actors are really talented and funny, and I am so glad to see Fran Dresher on TV again.
I hope it'll last at least 3-4 seasons.

Fran and Steven are Great, Show Has Potential
thajose30 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Only really watched this because I am a big fan of Fran Drescher and Steven Weber, having grown up watching "The Nanny" and "Wings". The writing was a bit hit or miss, some episodes seemed like they were throwing anything on the wall to see what could stick. Other episodes were great. I felt that Episode 9 is easily the best of the series as far as comedy and chemistry goes. Laughed a good bit throughout that one. I thought the series finally was finding its groove at that point. Fran and Steven are great as always, and have great chemistry together. Their chemistry reminded me of my parents a good bit.
I just read that this show was cancelled and we won't get a season 2. That is disappointing, as I think the show had some potential, with a few kinks in the writing ironed out. It would be nice to see Fran and Steven work together again at some point in the future.

Stale and Unfunny
man-9651310 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I find it hard to believe that this stale and unfunny "comedy" made it into production. It confirms that Fran Drescher has the most limited range of any Actress working in North America. Yes, I was a major fan of "The Nanny". The antics of Ms. Drescher were funny - 25 years ago. Like unrefrigerated Lox the same stale antics get pretty stinky after several decades.
While the Nanny had a cast of supporting characters who could provide a contrast to Ms. Drescher, the cast of indebted is bland and just not engaging. Steven Weber is particularly wasted in a script that is just stupid and horribly unfunny.
I would much rather see a reboot of the original Nanny series. At least that series didn't need to use a women's nudity to drive a sub plot. A little aside to the writers, it is 2020, using a women's breasts as "comedy " is so NOT funny.
