It's an average sitcom with potential because of the cast

This has a chance to be a pretty good show but it relies on so many of the ridiculous sitcom cliches that it can kill a scene. Please don't make the kids smarter than the parents! Ugh, that is so worn out and unfunny. Don't make Don Johnson's character the unwanted father-in-law! The nosy in-law is worn out. Make him a solid support for his son-in-law and grandchildren. The sometimes live in grand dad on the Goldbergs is a good example of tis. He's only in episodes where he can add something and there isn't anyone trying to get rid of him every episode. Don Johnson has the most gravitas in the cast make sure his character is written that way. Kenan is really good in this roll and most of the supporting cast is good. We'll give it a while.

Oh The Humanity

What everybody wants... a show about hyper-annoying morning people. Ok SNL sketch premise.... terrible series premise.

Cliche'd jokes, flat characters, annoying kids. Another the-world-of-men-as-seen-through-the-eyes-of-Hollywood show.

Terrible show for most guys, it might find an audience with women and gay men (probably the group they're after, anyway).

Keenan was one of the few bright spots left on SNL. He did his time - and much more - on that show.... he's due a great sitcom.

I don't see this being it.

Group Hug! Group Hug! It's about time Kenan Thompson got his own show.

I enjoyed this pilot episode with its cast of characters that include Kenan Thompson who is a recent widower, raising his two (2) daughters with his stepfather Rick (Don Johnson) who is living with them. I don't understand some of the other reviewers who want to shelve this show after one episode? Kenan Thompson deserves better than that.

Kenan plays the co-host of an early morning TV show called Wake Up With Kenan who appears to still be processing his grief about his dead wife. Everything and anything Kenan seems to say this one particular morning on his morning TV show is coming out the wrong way so his show is going through a little rough patch at the moment. The kids have an uncle who is Kenan's brother named Gary (Chris Redd) who tries to convince his brother Kenan that it is time he starts living his own life and enjoying himself a little bit.

His two daughters are cute kids and this new formed family seems to have some great on set chemistry. What I really like about this TV series though is "what it doesn't have" and that is that awful canned laughter. Thank you producers for realizing that I can smile and/or laugh when something the cast says is humorous without having to be prompted by that annoying canned laughter on so many other sitcoms.

I for one would like to watch another dozen or so episodes to determine how entertaining Kenan and his new family will be. Kenan Thompson has paid his dues and deserves this opportunity alongside Don Johnson and Chris Redd.

I give it a more than respectable 8 out of 10 IMDB rating.

So NOT even remotely funny
man-9651319 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
No. Just no.

Keenan Thompson knows how to be funny. He continually demonstrates his comedic gifts on Saturday Night Live. But, don't expect to see those talents on display on this big steaming pile of "NBC Filler". Perhaps it would be different if it HAD comedy writers... or even if it HAD writers who had ever seen Mr. Thompson perform. Their writing is not just bad - it is embarrassingly bad.

This is a poorly conceived, and even more poorly executed program. One of the poorest aspects of this is the casting of the "token White guy" Don Johnson. Who was the "rocket scientist " who suggested that Don Johnson play a grandpa on a comedy series. Johnson has a decades long career of NO experience in comedy - and even he is under served by the stale and tepid writing.

And, note to NBC, there are literally hundreds of talented Black actors who DO know how to handle comedy. It is shameful to have given this role to a clueless white guy.

If NBC expects to remain in the entertainment business, they need to hire writers who know how to write. And, they need to cast people who are actually talented instead of wallowing in a quota system based on political correctness.

Horrible
kakabuggie-7019821 February 2021
I expected a lot better from Kenan. I think they should have come up with another plot, the dead wife....not a good decision. His SIDE KICK (doing wayyyyy to much.) Maybe they should have used him being a single dad but not with the wife passing. Maybe away to work (career took off) had to move for a movie. I dont know but what I do know is this was hard to watch. I hope they do better. I will give it ONE more show if that dont get better IM DONE.

Ouch

That was brutal. Really disappointing. Expected better. Something was just off and awkward about the entire show. From the tone to the character interactions. I'll give it another week or 2 hoping it gets better, but it doesn't look promising.

Awkward, Cringy Trash

First show in a very long time I actually had to force my way through it. I kept thinking at some point it was going to get better but it really doesn't. I have no idea what they were thinking, Kenan is usually funny, this was not.

Bordering on being totally inappropriate
hunkazine17 February 2021
Be forewarned...this episode contains some inuendos and situations that were out of line, in my opinion...for the actors who play children to be a part of. I am not talking about the mother situation itself. I am talking about the way their parents developed their attraction for each other and the way their father explained it to the young girls. Ick. Two stars for Don Johnson because...well...he is Don Johnson.
