Rather enjoyable. Some great characters.

After the brash tone of the Anarchists, Father Brown returns to a more mellow tone. Indeed the Kembleford ramblers association and English countryside add a level of harmony, that is until guns start blazing, and the body turns up.

It's a good mystery, although the story is a little formulaic, and the solution is pretty obvious to say the least, but it's very well acted, and engaging to watch. Maggie O'Neil I thought was particularly good.

It's fair to say that some of the characters are a little over the top, especially Hetty, who was a bit overly posh.

Interesting

Warning: Spoilers
This review is based on a PBS (USA) broadcast, in case there is any difference with the original.

I have seen a few episodes of Father Brown over the years, so I am somewhat familiar with the characters.

What I was not aware of is that while the series is set in the 1950's, the author died in 1936. That would explain the lack of references to World War 2, and also some of the technological advances that occurred during and after the war.

This particular story would be familiar to almost any mystery buff, with the mis-directions and false starts. What is interesting is the Father Brown is not the driving force for much of the story. This allows several of the other characters more screen time, and lets those actors shine.

One questionable part was Bunty and Hetty in the study. After Bunty finds the letters, and Hetty comes though the door with the gun, it is as if the writers are trying to make Hetty a suspect. Also, Bunty was a little too far away from Hetty that her easily taking the gun from Hetty was not believable.

Still, a good story, worth the watch.

The Skylark Scandal
Prismark103 April 2019
It looks like the entire village of Kembleford as gone rambling. Bunty is distraught that they are staying overnight in a hostel. Inspector Mallory is irritated by the birdsong that stops him from going to sleep.

One member of the group was nearly shot by Lord Henry Hollingworth as the group took a shortcut across his land. It was a public path. His daughter turns out to be an old boarding school friend of Bunty

Later that night, the dead body of Lord Hollingworth is found in the hostel. .

The episode deals with some darker issues. The noble Lord was far from noble in his past. His past has come back to haunt him.

It has to be said that this was a weaker mystery, it was all rather signposted too much. It looks like the writer Rachel Smith has a dim opinion of toffs.

Very enjoyable mystery

The Kembleford ramblers annual outing takes a tragic turn when the local lord is found strangled. Very enjoyable episode with inspector Mallory treating Hetty with respect as she's a lord's daughter. The mystery is quite good, too.

One of the best of the season!

Warning: Spoilers
The seventh season of "Father Brown" has been much better than the previous season, I have said it numerous times, and "The Skylark Skandal" continues the 7-th season on a very good note. It's not a great episode, but a pretty good one indeed.

Let's start with the good aspects, shall we?

. The production values of the episode are great as usual for the series. "The Skylark Scandal" is extremly well- directed, the music's wonderful and the acting is mostly good too. Out of the solid guest stars Maggie O'Neil fares the best.

. The story is very compelling with dark subjects (rape) and very quirky humor.

But...

. The solution (Maggie O'Neill's the killer) is very obvious from the start.

Overall, a very good "Father Brown" episode .

Scandal

Warning: Spoilers
Miranda Hennessy who was in an episode of Inside No. 9, stars as Henrietta 'Hetty' Hollingworth, and this episode, The Skylark Scandal is worth watching. The scenery is very green, with ramblers galore enjoying the greenery and walking under the sun. I loved the scene where Father Brown and the Scooby Gang stay in a hostel overnight, with bunk beds and all.

Anyway, I'm enjoying catching up with Father Brown as daytime television and I'm also enjoying watching the spin-off, The Sister Boniface Mysteries.

Anyway, the episode had Bunty being Bunty and being the wild child that Bunty is being famous for.

Too modern

The lady chairman of the ramblers referred to herself as "chair". I am sure such terminology was not in use in the 1950s.

Similarly neither was "twitcher" for birdwatcher.
