During Color of Change’s Sundance panel “Looking Forward: The Future of Crime Television”, Terence Paul Winter, executive producer & writer of The Rookie; Sunil Nayar, former writer/showrunner of All Rise; and Melody Cooper, writer & story editor of Law & Order Svu unpacked a topic that is impacting storytelling on television more now than ever: the portrayal of policing and the criminal justice system in this country.
As the reckoning of social justice and authentic representation in Hollywood continues to forge ahead and fight an uphill battle for systemic change the writers talked about the changing landscape when it comes to storytelling on their shows. After George Floyd’s murder, the landscape has changed drastically in terms of how to portray stories involving the police, the court system and justice. It’s a struggle that has been ignored for far too long and change is slowly yet surely being made.

Undead things come to those who wait. After its planned spring premiere was delayed by the coronavirus outbreak, AMC’s second offshoot of The Walking Dead, World Beyond, at last has a new start date, it was announced at the show’s Comic-Con @ Home panel Friday: Sunday, Oct. 4, at 10/9c, immediately following the finale-that’s-no-longer-a-finale of the mother ship. A special episode of Talking Dead will air afterwards and include discussions of both The Walking Dead’s “finale” and World Beyond’s premiere.
The new show — billed as a two-season limited event — revolves around the first generation of survivors raised after the zombie apocalypse.

NBC has ordered the unscripted series “Home Sweet Home,” which hails from Ava DuVernay.
In the 10-episode hour-long series, two families who lead very different lives go through a full-immersion cultural experiment. The show chronicles walking a mile in another person’s shoes by challenging racial, religious, economic, geographic, gender and identity assumptions as participants exchange homes for a week and experience the life of someone unlike them.
“The idea for ‘Home Sweet Home’ came to me during the strange and important times we’re all experiencing,” DuVernay said. “The premise is that we are farther apart than ever, yet bound by what we have in common — concerns with health, safety, justice and community. These notions manifest in each of us in different ways, but nowhere more striking than in the privacy of our own homes. I’m thrilled that NBC and Warner Horizon embraced the challenge of this moment...

The day after Matthew A. Cherry won the Oscar for animated short film, he stepped onto the set of ABC’s “Mixed-ish” to direct the pivotal first season episode “Bad Boys,” which featured themes of abuse of power and saw parents Alicia (Tika Sumpter) and Paul (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) discussing racial profiling with their young son (Ethan William Childress).
Although Cherry hadn’t slept the night before beginning production (as he was celebrating his win), he had prepped for a week with the series’ director of photography Troy Smith, a rarity in the ever-moving machine of TV, because the show just happened to be on hiatus. Having done an episode of “The Red Line,” a limited series centered on a racially charged police shooting, as well as an episode of “The Last O.G.” that also dealt with the cop talk, Cherry was no stranger to such important material.

Daisy Ridley is moving on from her star-making role as Rey in the recent Star Wars films, having permanently put away her lightsaber with this past December’s Sequel Trilogy closer, The Rise of Skywalker. Consequently, Ridley’s would-be first role after that wild franchise ride could show her in different form, as a psychological profiler in a dark crime drama.
Talks have commenced with studio Stx for Ridley to star in The Ice Beneath Her, an adaptation of Swedish author Camilla Grebe’s 2016 crime novel of the same name, reports Deadline. Should the deal be finalized, then Ridley would be working for the trio of directors—collectively known as Radio Silence—consisting of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett and Chad Villella, who are coming off the hit 2019 comedic horror film, Ready or Not. They will work off an adaptation script by Caitlin Parrish, also joined by producer Andrew Lazar (American Sniper...

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett and Chad Villella — the filmmaker trio collective known as Radio Silence behind the 2019 thriller “Ready or Not” — will direct and produce.
“The Ice Beneath Her” is based on a 2015 novel by Swedish author Camilla Grebe, who made her solo, English-language debut with the book. Caitlin Parrish, a writer and producer on “Supergirl” and “The Red Line,” will write the screenplay adaptation.
The story follows a criminal profiler brought in to help solve a murder case that bares a resemblance to a previously unsolved murder from 10 years earlier. She’s tasked with tracking the charismatic, playboy CEO of a store chain who has mysteriously gone missing. But she’ll soon cross paths...

Amazon Studios has hopped on board with Macro Television Studios to partner with Ava DuVernay’s Array Filmworks to develop a TV adaptation of Octavia E. Butler’s 1987 sci-fi novel Dawn. Victoria Mahoney has been set as creator and will adapt and direct the pilot.
The project has been marinating for a while as Deadline exclusively reported that Macro, Array and Mahoney were developing the project in 2017. With Amazon on board, it seems that the project is gaining traction with development. The book, which was optioned by Macro, won a Hugo Award and tells the story of a black woman who works with aliens to resurrect the human race 250 years after a nuclear war.
The sci-fi genre is a good fit for Mahoney as she made history as the first woman (and woman of color for that matter) to direct a Star Wars film.

Variety was nominated for outstanding magazine overall coverage, in a year that marked its first ever Power of Pride issue and subsequent celebration in New York. Others in the category include Advocate, Billboard, Entertainment Weekly, and Out. The awards have also reinstated a category for best Broadway production, whose nominees for 2019 include “The Inheritance,” “Slave Play,” and “Jagged Little Pill.”

Asante Blackk emerged as a double nominee at the Critics Choice Association’s TV Awards, with supporting actor noms in the drama series category for NBC’s This Is Us and in limited series/movie for Netflix’s When They See Us.
That would be an impressive feat for any actor, but for Blackk, it marks a remarkable two-for-two batting average. The young actor, who just turned 18, has two acting credits on his resume, his breakout role on When They See Us as The Central Park “Exonerated 5” member Kevin Richardson, followed by his Season 4 series regular as teen dad Malik on This Is Us.
Blackk was one of two double Critics Choice TV nominees, along with Ramy Youssef, nominated for his Hulu series and his HBO standup special.
Ahead of the Golden Globe nominations Monday morning, Apple TV+ scored its first major awards nomination for The Morning Show standout Billy Crudup.

CBS’ courtroom drama “All Rise” has had a change of showrunners.
“David Makes Man” showrunner Dee Harris-Lawrence will replace Sunil Nayar as co-showrunner on “All Rise” alongside creator Greg Spottiswood, a person close to production told TheWrap.
It’s not clear why Nayar left, but the person confirmed that he asked Warner Bros TV., which produces the series, to leave, and they released him. Nayar’s previous credits include “Revenge,” “CSI: Miami,” “Body of Proof,” “Oz” and CBS’ “The Red Line.”
CBS gave “All Rise” a full-season order in October along with “Carol’s Second Act,” “The Unicorn” and “Bob Hearts Abishola.”
Harris-Lawrence first time showrunning was with the first season of Own’s “David Makes Man.” She also executive produced for the Warner Horizon Scripted Television-produced drama, created by Tarell Alvin McCraney. Her other credits include CBS drama “Zoo,” NBC’s “Chicago P.D.,” ABC’s “Zero Hour,” and TNT’s “Saving Grace.
