Strong feeling
ks-6050021 June 2021
Being a movie fans, I realized some good movies are being missed out, probably lack of promotion and not on Netflix. This is one of the good lovely movie people miss out. Just comfy when watching.

Hugely entertaining
yellowmarlin1 September 2021
Chock full of cliches, but no worse for that, this coming of age movie follows five friends from Fort William over 24 hours as they venture to Edinburgh for a school choir competition and back home again. A few secrets are told, a few lessons are learned and a lot of laughs are had.

Wee Sex Obsessed Coming of Age Drama.
jasongkgreen22 July 2021
Probably a good 7.5 out of 10 if I could.

Started a little slowly and built as did the characters. Ok, I'm a boy, but the sex obsession seemed a little over the top, but it was fun and funny in places, but built to something more.

I am not sure what, bar friendships and coming of age, but I was left feeling thoughtful and moved. It's a worthy watch, and I would recommend it as such.

Pretty Good!
vengeance202 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Didn't know what to expect to be fair but had a bad feeling this was going to be a bad film, surprisingly it wasn't!

The film basically follows 5 sex crazed catholic teenage girls in Scotland 1996, who are on a School Choir Competition Trip to Edinburgh! But the girls find themselves rebelling by going to bars & night clubs, drinking & mucking around town while trying to have sex with young men!

I found the film to be pretty entertaining! Which was surprising given that I thought ti was going to be some girls whinging & whining about life etc! It wasn't, far from it as well! At 99 minutes there's some laughs, gags & awkward moments as well as some eye candy also! The story was pretty good for what it was, nothing new or amazing to speak of, but it was alright as the scenes & funny scenarios made up for that!

Overall, it's pretty good! You'll be surprised!

7/10.

a great film - thoroughly enjoyable and acting was superb
contactmaz2 June 2021
Wasn't sure what to expect... choir singing, a story about girls; but Scotland is always a great setting for a film and the Scottish accent is, for me, amazing.

The girls were superb in their acting and each role was played fantastically. The story was very good, very, very good in fact and it had funny moments and sad moments.

I highly recommend this film and i've given this a well-deserved 10 for acting, script, setting, filming, funny/sad bits, realism, and the 'impact' when the film ended.

Some good observations, a little crude at times
Casual-Film-Goer3 September 2021
Not quite a catholic Train-spotting, light hearted fun film with a few cringe worth crude elements in this coming of age film.

Overall an enjoyable film but not worth standing in a queue.

HEARTWARMING & ENJOYABLE MOVIE
nanieo2 January 2022
Heartwarming coming of age movie about friendship between Catholic girls. Witty script with parts where I laughed out loud - when one of the girls mentioned Mad Cow's Disease was one. Its also got its poignant and touching parts too. Its quite a gem as its not very often when I come across movies like this - I am really so glad i did. I must say I have never seen any of these actresses act before, but they are all very good.

Vulgar=comedy?
Prekarijus21 March 2022
Tell modern women acting like a slave to a man's wet dream by constantly objectifying yourself is feminism and freedom and they will do it in an instant.

This is what first wave of feminism was against, vulgar skanks who tough men that females are sex objects. Real feminists wanted to take out females out of sex. Feminism wasn't about worker rights, majority of first wave feminists were happy housewives but they saw what prostitution did to others, first and foremost it was a fight against objectification, destroying brothels and other 'houses' of female humiliation and rather giving females a right to find an actual job if they didn't want to marry and be housewives.

That's what real feminism stood for,a choice to either have a job that doesn't humiliate you and gives you intellectual pleasure or a choice to be at home raising kids taking care of a huge house--(which I would consider a real job because back then they didn't have any technology that we do now and 2 parents working was impossible unless you owned slaves,it took hours of hard work to clean and wash and cook, now it's 30 minutes work and females can easily work part time at least while having 100% of chores on their shoulders, back then you also didn't have so many choices where to leave your kids so one parent always had to be at home)--

Music was enjoyable
janicefleming12 September 2021
This film was full of unlikeable characters with almost everyone apparently obsessed with sex. It was almost like some weird man had put his warped sexual fantasies about catholic teenage girls onto film and for that reason it was far fetched, very crude and lacking in humour. The scenery and soundtrack were the only two redeeming features. I would definitely NOT recommend going to see this.

this is scottish nostalgia...
ops-525353 June 2021
And a whip in the side of catholic school systems, the allmighty nuns, and a sprawling entertaining young choirgirls fantasies how the world of erotics and romantic functions.

The cast ensemble are deviously well chosen, the polarisation between the members of the crowd are just immense and the laughter and jokes flies like a spitfire doing the turmoil roll at full boost. They fit like a skiier in a condomsuit, and appears on the screen as if theyve been class mates for real...

the stashing, costumes, locations and production design arewell considered, the filmographic temperature and choice of dim colours makes this an open door back to the 90's. Soundtrack and quality of musical score is well chosen and executed, and when it comes to moral it gives the grumpy old man goosebumps all over my body. So let yourself be inspired of a gracious story about a crowd of young lassies from the scottish highlands entering the edinbourough castle and princess street with glitter, glamour and the voices of nightingales.

Its a recommend.

Decent play ruined by all male writing team
jilldykes-9731525 July 2022
I was so looking forward to this, having thoroughly enjoyed the play a few years ago.

Having been a teenage girl in Scotland in the 90s, I felt excited to see some of my generation's perspective on coming of age during that time represented on film.

It seems the 3 middle-aged male writers charged with adapting the novel and play (also male written) for film consulted no teenage girls in Scotland on how they think, talk, or speak!!

For the record, teenage Scottish girls swear and talk about sex, but we never ran around talking about wanting to shag and be shagged by random and multiple blokes!!

No, really!!

Not in the 90s, and not now!! Not at the age of 15-16 that these girls seem to be. Not in our 20s either, or at any other point in time! And I'm saying that as a very liberal woman who worked in sex education with teenagers in the late 90s and early 00s!!

Talk about male gaze, and some borderline dodgy wishful thinking on behalf of the writing team!

We had to turn it off after half an hour as this constant stream of 'I want shagged' claims throughout the group of girls (sincere or otherwise), was really getting on our tits! It undermined the credulity of all the characters and emerging plot lines (well-played by a great group of young Scottish actors I should say - no complaints over the performances from what we saw).

What a wasted opportunity to shine a light on girls and women, on Scotland, and on that place in time through the medium of film.

If you're going to put on a production about girls and women, try involving some in the writing and production!!

Loved it!
Grax992 June 2021
One of those rare occasions of not expecting too much from a film and then being knocked sideways by the quality of the acting, story, script, music, singing etc etc

Completely immersed from start to finish & disappointed when it ended. Including the end song.

Well done to all concerned.

Coarse on occasions but funny with it. The Northern soul club made me want to be there.

Builds into a great, heartwarming tale.
andrewjdavis-home28 August 2021
The first 30 minutes were a bit, awkward, with the schoolgirls (albeit hilarious) sex obsessions, but stick with it. By the end I was welling up a bit about their friendship and the story. Excellent movie, great scenery, fantastic performances, very funny in parts. Recommended.

Very unrealistic
jennihowell-1077230 August 2021
I went to see this after falling in love with Derry Girls. While watching the film, something felt very wrong as this was exactly my era and I had a similar background. I said to my friend, it's almost as if its how a man likes to imagine girls to be, heavily stereotyped under the heading Catholic. The script did not ring true on so many levels and really missed an opportunity to explore the vulnerabilities of girls growing up in this setting, and I was right, it's a male author and director. For me Derry Girls is so successful because the characters are loveable and all very different. The girls in this film were very shallow, samey and unintelligent. I may be wrong but when 'girls like this' were getting up to 'trouble' , good old Catholic shame would barely let anyone talk about it and that was the major issue and why there were so many teen pregnancies. Please give us more films with depth and a social conscience when exploring such important topics, Derry Girls did this so brilliantly and with such great humour.

Scottish girls on a bender.
deloudelouvain23 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Well I had a lot of fun watching this Scottisch movie. First of all from all the English accents, Scottish and Irish are the most enjoyable to listen to. Scottish is what you get in this comedy, mostly teenage girls having their hormones going wild, so the main thing they're talking about is sex. It's a bit coming of age, catholic teenagers escaping the nuns searching for adventures. Girls on a bender in Scotland, it's just funny to watch. Good acting as well and that from the whole young cast. The title didn't sound very promising, but I was wrong. I would watch it again in the future.

There is something wrong
gekkepoppetje12 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Initially 'Our Ladies' resembles a cheerful feel-good movie as they are regularly produced in England, Ireland and Scotland.

What makes the film unrealistic is the excessive focus on sex. The film presents an endless series of clichés of sexually aggressive women and soft and stupid men. The writers must be male and have no idea about sexuality in general and female sexuality in particular.

When a young girl (that is serious ill) finds the romance she has dreamt of, there is zero chance she will objectify him and turn her first date into a porn hub fantasy.

This movie is not about schoolgirls, its about men.

Stand by me for the modern times.
mick-meyers21 September 2021
A very good film, very reminiscent of stand by me albeit more raucous.the acting and the cast first class.deserves more publicity and release venues.a film of the pain and pitfalls of growing up from the female perspective.

Heart warming story of friendship and sex
taz121_7 November 2021
The thing that gets me about imdb is the so called movie experts who feel the need to pick every little thing wrong with a movie as opposed to just enjoying it for what it is...Entertainment and in this case I felt it delivered.

This is a fun movie with romantic 90s references. A little silly at times but I enjoyed it. Good acting, good soundtrack and a decent story set amongst stunning scenery.

Give it a watch and ignore the keyboard experts.

Must have watched a different movie....
lloydjonesm4 June 2021
Unfunny, unconvincing and unrealistic.

Sure, I get it, teen girls talk about sex.

But not 100% of the time and to the detriment of just about everything else as this movie would have you believe.... Gave up half way through.

A perfect raw coming of age dramedy, and in my top 3 of Scottish film-making.
monsieurmatthews30 October 2022
This movie blew me away, after being aggressively recommended 3 times by my non aggressive friend Charlie, I finally stumbled across it on NF with 3 days left to watch, I pressed play as scrolling fatigue was happening. Suddenly the music, teenage rebellion, blasphemy and swearing sparked the same excitement when watching Gregory's Girl at 10 and Trainspotting at 22. This was in my top 3 before I even finished the film. 10/10 for the acting, chemistry, humour, emotion, pace, soundtrack and realism. The film will receive the admiration it deserves, once the female leads make their name in Hollywood.

Utterly cliched
fieryangel23 November 2021
We've had decades of this type of Scottish humour from 7:84 to Connolly to the Slab Boys etcetc , But done well . This was a male fantasy of tarty schoolgirls with a few bits of unconvincing social conscience and an obligatory smattering of sleazy men who they slag off and then go off with !

Depressing and dishonest . Is that really what women talk like ? The Traverse Theatre version was joyous , irreverent, moving and hilarious and devoid of gratuitous sexism.

Far beyond my expectations
CeriDee21 December 2023
My expectation was for an average at best comedy which I thought I'd watch for the scenes of Edinburgh that I'd visited earlier this year.

I was drawn into a warming tale of friendship and love with an ending that left me in tears.

Great actresses (and a few actors) that made their characters feel "real", I have no doubt they all have solid careers ahead of them.

The pace was spot on, no scene too drawn out, humour was subtle in places and laugh out loud in others.

I have to admit I was maybe a bit distracted at times by the "walked there, been there, saw that" moments in Edinburgh but it is a stunning city and well worth visiting.

Beautiful film.

Came across when flicking through channels - totally worth viewing
tingy-6430923 February 2023
Thoroughly enjoyed this film - I had not heard of it but when flicking through channels it caught my eye. The acting is fantastic - characters full of depth. The storyline and setting brings so much...tones of musical at times, elements of humour and seriousness. All characters are relatable - you will find many who you will be able to place from your own life experience. I am not religious - certainly have limited knowledge of catholic schools but there are certain themes taken to extreme in some ways but that is how to jam so much into a film. Both storyline and characters bring life to this... balanced and enriched. Makes me want to read the book....totally recommended. Life is for living...

Cast brilliant, but what an awful script
thefultons-4314911 September 2021
I just can't understand how a coming of age film about a group of teenage Scottish schoolgirls, written by a male Australian septuagenarian could be so unfunny. Any ideas?
