Lucas Pope strikes again
petra_ste23 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
After the gem that was Papers, Please, Lucas Pope crafts another puzzle adventure with unusual setting and premise, delivering an original, engrossing experience.

You play as an insurance investigator exploring the ghost ship Obra Dinn, whose crew and passengers are either dead or missing. Your task is to discover what happened, thanks to a peculiar device which allows you to relive the last moments of each body you find. Experiencing those memories and comparing them to the informations you gather or deduct, you need to identify every character and find out his fate (who was murdered, how and by whom, who died of natural causes...), unraveling the tragic mystery of the Obra Dinn.

The retro graphics may be off-putting to some players but they have an elegant simplicity and, like in Papers, Please, feel perfectly functional to the story. Overall, the experience was so compelling that never once I was bothered by the fact that this looks like a game I could have played on my old Commodore 64. Voice acting and sound design are excellent.

The result is a multiple murder mystery with a supernatural twist, Master & Commander meets Agatha Christie via the X-Files. If you have seen the Ridley Scott-produced series The Terror, that's the kind of atmosphere Return of the Obra Dinn goes for.

Breathing new life into the puzzle adventure genre
Mazzolli3 April 2019
Return of the Obra Dinn offers an entrancing mystery and satisfying puzzles that can be tackled from many angles. It feels like Lucas Pope showed us a whole new way to craft an adventure game, daring you to investigate every little bit of the story and characters. The game uses its limited graphics and simple presentation to great effect. This could be one of the rare puzzle games worth replaying, and is my game of the year for 2018.

Ingenious, Original Puzzle Adventure

Return of the Obra Dinn is an immensely clever puzzle adventure game that walks a tricky balance of giving you just enough information to be able to reasonable deduce the correct conclusions while leaving out just enough information to make you feel clever when you solve it. Don't let anybody spoil this for you, it's a truly unique, original experience.

Only complaints are very minor. Really wish that it was easier/more intuitive to jump around between memories when looking around for clues, since the interface is somewhat tedious, but it's honestly not enough to detract from the overall experience.

A new genre that will hopefully take off.

If you've ever wanted to play a game about an insurance agent finding out who's who and how they met their fates on a ship, this is the game for you.

But seriously, yeah, it's great. I wish the epilogue chapter was more of a "big reveal" than it was, but it was still satisfying and cool.
