Well made but frustrating
TimTimTimmayy31 December 2020
This had everything going for it: it was well made, the actors weren't terrible and it was watchable but it is frustrating as hell to say the least. By the end of it, I thought it was mediocre.

It could have been more
MrTLDR23 February 2021
I really enjoyed the premise of this film and it had a lot of potential. I take nothing away from all the actors who put in solid performances especially the young girl playing an autistic child. But while it had a sold start and middle it really fell away in the last 3rd and the ending was trash stuffing what should have been a great film and had me shaking my head and regretting my time watching it.

TLDR: The noise here is at the end of the film. Avoid.

What a sloppy mess
takato05248 March 2021
This movie started off promising, but then the father opened his mouth and the quality dropped. Your autistic daughter is 11, but you interact with her like it's your first time being around her. So I thought maybe the wife died and he was left with custody. That was not the case. He was just a bad father. All he did throughout the entire movie was yell at her for being her. His acting was atrocious. The only reason I even gave this 2 stars was because the girl was good. But everything else was awful. Who padlocks their special needs child in their room every night, then gets blackout drunk like a college kid, waking up in a new place each time. The ending also was a little confusing, but it may have been because I checked out 50 minutes in.

Back Wash Your Water Pic, Take A Nap, Miss This One!
deager1 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Really, this is just a bad movie. Really it is. I don't care what the glowing reviews say. It isn't about redemption, father/daughter bonding, blah, blah, blah. Deep down in its movie fiber it is a bad movie. It is an angry dad, an angry dad lawyer, and angry dad whose daughter is Autistic and his "stupid" wife up and gets herself killed in a "stupid" car wreck and leaves HIM to have to DEAL WITH EVERYTHING!! In a angry manner, in an angry, rude manner for how ever minutes this just bad movie drags on. The whole movie is him being angry at everyone until all of a sudden some spirit mother, wife, indigo thingy shows up in the house, really cool house, that is angry too by the way because some evil man had an orphanage...oh never mind, you know the plot line. He becomes a nicer daddy but a meaner, passive aggressive daddy because mommy is now in control and she is going to...hell, I have no idea what he or dead back to life mommy are going to do to their poor daughter, something to make communicate? Be Normal? WT hell! Autism is serious and to play fast and loose with some "magnetic" treatment, spirit cure thing was really weird. The whole plot was all over the map, and we only have half the map. With no rest areas for a good walk about! Once I start a movie I generally see it through...boy I wish I had worked on the water-pic this time! 2 stars for decent acting, good cinematography and a few non-angry faces.

Worst Representation Ever

I couldn't get 15 minutes into the movie. The child displays high functioning and low functioning to extremes. The father acts like its his first time interacting with his autistic daughter... whoever wrote this was just trying to make money off of people who are fascinated with disabilities.

Nice movie

Storyline is good, interesting characters and the acting was good. I like horror/suspense movies, this was a bit soft for me but after all it was worth to watch.

Absolutely infuriating
enigma-947-33946725 February 2021
After 42 mins I couldn't take anymore of this so-called father, who apparently, somehow missed the first 11 years of this autistic girl's life, and acted like he just met her for the first time. He had NO IDEA how to handle and autistic child. Really? After 11 years, you learned NOTHING? She whined for the entire time and he raged at her, making it worse. Even a toddler would have figured out the behavior that was making things worse and made an adjustment. Not this idiot. BAD, no, horrible writing. I give up.

Such a good movie!
craigahrens27 December 2020
I enjoyed this film a lot! It's such a great story. I wasn't able to jump like I usually do. This film kept me guessing and very much engaged! The actors were also extremely good! I really enjoyed the dad's character (John Mese). He did a terrific job! Actually I think all of the actors did quite well. Director (and writer) Marcus McCollum did a good job with the pacing of this film. Everything moved along at a nice pace. I found no flat spots along the way! So for me, this film gets a thumb's up!!

I must be getting old!
I enjoyed this movie, but, I must be getting old because, Faye Hostetter who played Emmy looked like she was about 14 years old. She was 11 years old when she was in 'James and the Giant Peach' in 1996, so that would mean that she is 35 years old! How can that be?

its not a 101...
ops-5253520 February 2021
Guide to treat an autistic person so beware and behold, and whos really the autistic individual. anyway its a slowburning a little on acid tubular bell-ending story about a father a daughter and a dead mother.the core caretaker was the mum, meaning caring for his vividly hyperactive child that haunts him like a purgatorial whirlwind, seeking help, if so from infinity itself. so magnetotherapy seems to be the last resort, will it help or not...?

its a slowburning horror thriller, where you wait and wait for something apocalyptic to happen, but it flames out time and again. autism isnt unknown to me, having some light spectrumers in the vicinity, and yes , they have ways to absorb things around that to us a-z sound and healthy never sees and never cares to think about as troublesome. ive had quite a few aha moments of children acting as brats due to unknown reasons, till years later when diagnose set, when one set of answer to the clue was given. it was the sounds, or more correctly the smatting sounds around the food table that made the kid snap for years, ending up never eating in the same room as the rest of the group. so auditorial boost happens. i could mention more and more over, but the stress is real believe me, and the numbers of misunderstandings was and is still vast and problematic to understand.

so i might say that many will reckon something from this film, but as a blockbuster it wont be acclaimed, and will render into oblivion after a while, at least in the filmatographic overstimulated grumpy old mans mind. the acting is pure average, the story and caracter building pretty shallow and extremely clueless, and what the main theme is , is hard to say. is it a horrorthriller or a psychothriller? have a look yourself, and eventually make a recommend yourself. cause i wont ...yet.

Demonizes People on the Spectrum
shmarie7 February 2021
While the acting is certainly top-notch and convincing, thus evoking the intended emotions from the audience, there are other issues. A frequent complaint about the horror genre is how it demonizes and/or stereotypes people with various mental health diagnoses and this film is no exception. Autism Spectrum Disorder is portrayed as a complete burden and somewhat insinuates that those who suffer from it may be dangerous or even susceptible to evil. Another good thing about this film is that it kept you guessing. However, I still had some unanswered questions at the end of the movie.

Autismsploitation?!
coex2318 February 2021
What is it with autism in the past 15 years or so in film? People on the spectrum are either super detectives (Sherlock and countless other detective tv shows lately) or able to see ghosts and stuff. It's become a trope and an unwanted trope at that.

That all said, it's a serviceable film, but the ugliness of Autismsploitation (?) hangs over it constantly.

Ends Up Being Pretty
For some reason I really liked the intro to this one. The music set a nice ambience. Yeah weird but oh well. +1 Star for that!

There is good point about autistic kids given about a HALF hour in. 'Maybe it's not about fixing her, it's about accepting her.' I deal daily with a severe autistic and you always find yourself wishing that you could fix them. But the reality sadly is that that is not going to happen. +1 Star for the Tidbit

Okay now for some really dumb reason he takes his SEVERE autistic trick or treating??? That's just really stupid. -1 Star for that

As the movie progresses we need more into spirit bonding and the spirit world. The autistic kid has a dead mother spirit thing going on. All of that just seemed rather annoying and I thought the end was pretty lame so -3 Stars for all of that nonsense. 3/10

Well, that was stupid!

1/3 of the movie is substance.

1/3 of the movie is Emmy raggedly crying.

1/3 of the movie is dad yelling, "Emmy, Emmy, Emmy, Emmy, Emmy!" Literally.

interesting idea
BandSAboutMovies3 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
After the sudden death of his wife Sara (Tara Buck, Ginger from True Blood), Richard (John Mese) is left behind to care for his non-verbal autistic daughter Emmie (Faye Hostetter). Before she died, Sara had set up an experimental therapy for her daughter and rented a house near the center that would treat her. However that house is haunted, as is Richard, who has started to indulge in drinking and drugs, all while the voices in that house - and the ones in Emmie's head, begin to possess her latent psychic powers.

To add to that cocktail, now Sara has seemingly come back from beyond, speaking to Richard, who is sure she's here to help him. But is it really his wife? Or something evil?

Noise In the Middle has an intriguing idea, which was written by Glen Kannon and Marcus McCollum, who also directed. You may grow frustrated with Richard, who is continually pointed in the right direction by, well, everyone in this movie, only to do the exact opposite at pretty much every turn.

That said, there's some solid acting here and the actual emotion of loss and trying to understand how to be a parent afterward seems honest, even when the horror elements get in the way.

Nicely made but...

I wish there was more about the building, the man, the giggling children etc. It did a tiny bit about it and then went onto apparently a psycho dad mourning for his wife.

Enjoyed a lot about it, the ending being what loses stars
imfallenangelyahoo26 April 2021
Having a daughter that is autistic myself, I tend to be very judgmental about anything that touches the subject. I was the sole parent (full custody) for a few years (until I met my wife that took my children as her own) and can understand the character and his portrayal quite well. This movie and the acting nailed it for the most part, and is a LOT better than most movies. It's something that most internet experts do not understand is the day to day challenges and frustrations of raising an handicapped child alone..

In this movie, many do not understand the idea:The father was a workaholic that wasn't that involved in his daughter's upbringing, as he had left it to his wife. She is now gone and he's facing the responsibility of doing it on his own. He is dealing with his wife's death, which he avoids in parts and feels very lost, which affect him in many ways. There are notes about addiction problems from his past, and that he was adopted that opens the door to many possibilities.

The daughter's autism is portrayed extremely well by the actress, and the seeing ghost thing is more about her just being someone that just happens to be able to do such, and not at all related to her autism, and the movie does it in a way that is actually fair and well done.

It's the new-age store owner that goes with this angle (of her autism giving her special abilities), which in my experience is close to how it is in real life. People that does consider themselves "knowing" and assume that any handicapped person might (or do) have special abilities. This is thanks to the media and movies and such, and all the "feel good" BS news stories.

The fictional therapy is acceptable for the sake of FICTION, and is a very minor point, and more about the plot of why they moved to the house.

The story is solid enough to be interesting, but the ending felt very rushed and that is what I consider what loses the stars for it. They did so much in the build-up of the characters and setup, that too much time was devoted to the development and ended up missing the half-way mark for the "things are changing" part of the movie which was packed in the last 15 minutes.

The final scene didn't work for a few reason that I'll omit for the sake to not spoil it.

Noise in the Middle: Where Pseudoscience Meets Paranormal Parenting Woes
P3n-E-W1s39 November 2023
Story: 1.00/2 - Direction & Pacing 2.25/4 - Performances: 1.50/2 - Entertainment 1.25/2

Total - 6/10.

Imagine a world where psychological thrillers collide with experimental mind-altering experiments, the product of which would be "Noise in the Middle", a movie that's like ordering a mystery box and getting a puzzle with missing pieces. The unique story could've been a buffet of robust, fascinating, and thought-provoking ingredients. However, we're merely served a psychological paranormal-ish thriller with all the frills of a salad without the dressing.

The direction tries to play hero, adding power to the creative storytelling like a caffeinated narrator on a sacred mission. However, the tempo remains steadfastly a stubborn mule, constantly hindering the cinematic journey instead of propelling it forward. It's like maintaining a sports car with a governor that kicks in whenever things get remotely exciting-cue the eye rolls.

But fear not, for the superb cast comes to the rescue like the Avengers of acting. Faye Hostetter, in particular, deserves a standing ovation for her brilliant portrayal of an autistic girl navigating a complex world more terribly confusing than IKEA instructions. The troubled father in this tragic tale is so clueless he ironically makes a stone rock look like Einstein. Bravo, dear sir! I caught myself shouting at the screen, wondering if he attended the "Parenting 101: How Not to Be a Bad Dad" seminar.

While "Noise in the Middle" could've been undoubtedly a masterpiece, it gracefully tiptoes away from the burning pit of doom, settling comfortably into the "watch it once, maybe twice if you're feeling adventurous" category.

In conclusion, if you're in the mood for a delicious concoction of pseudoscience, paranormal oddities, and parenting mishaps, "Noise in the Middle" might be your tepid cup of questionable tea. The picture's worth a viewing for Faye Hostetter's stellar performance. Don't forget to shout fiercely at the dreadful dad. And brace yourself for an uncomfortable ride that's as bumpy as a road under construction.

Some people should get their facts straight
noddybesgrove-954927 June 2023
Faye who played Emmy was not in James and the Giant Peach in 1996. She was not even a voice actor then.

This movie is her debut to the acting scene which she did a brilliant job.. For someone to portray a special needs child goes beyond what a young actor can do.. We enjoyed her in that role and the movie was good overall.. This movies the struggle it is for a single parent to contain and look after a child requiring special needs.. They in themselves, those children, can and do bare remarkable gifts but when something is around they can sense them way before the parents do.

Her Dad was trying to the best and it will always be a struggle and I take my hat off to them.. The ending.... Well...., I'll leave that to you to decide.
