The horror genre thrives upon cautionary tales where arrogant individuals believe that they can outsmart some supernatural force for their own gain. It’s for this reason that the greed-quenching Djinn and parables where people learn to be careful what they wish for, usually in the most morbid ways possible, are popular horror tropes. Djinn are a fascinating concept, but they’ve struggled to truly make their mark in cinema between largely-forgettable films like Jinn, The Djinn, Wish Upon, and even George Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing. But Djinn stories can still be fun and effective in the right context. And Robert Kurtzman’s Wishmaster is still the premier djinn horror film over 25 years later.
Wishmaster is a movie that understands the unabashed joys of a big, dumb plot where there’s a giant magical gemstone that’s the key to the Djinn’s powers because why the hell not?...

Stars: Lonnie Chavis, Ezra Dewey, Micah Hauptman, Kristin Bauer van Straten | Written and Directed by David Charbonier, Justin Powell
Although The Djinn beat it to release in the US by a few months, The Boy Behind the Door is writer/director David Charbonier and Justin Powell’s first feature. Unlike that film, this has a plot rooted in the all too real horrors of child abductions and human trafficking. And it’s all the more shocking and disturbing for it.
The film opens with Bobby and Kevin (Ezra Dewey; The Djinn) in the trunk of a car. A brief flashback shows their violent abduction from a park. Back in the present Kevin is taken from the trunk by the unseen and unnamed Creep. Left alone Bobby manages to escape the car’s trunk, only to find himself in the middle of nowhere.
Before he can make an escape he hears Kevin screaming inside the house.

Welp, 2021 was certainly a year. There was a lot of good (Movies! TV! Books! Random Horror Awesomeness!) and a lot of bad (pretty much everything else), but we made it to 2022, and I am excited for all that’s to come in the next 12 months (at least when it comes to stuff going on in horror). Over the course of last year, I think formally reviewed over 60 films, did interviews for at least 20 other projects beyond those reviewed films, relaunched Indie Horror Month in April, and even did a ton of other features and articles on Daily Dead as well.
Suffice to say, 2021 was pretty darned busy for me on the writing front and because there was so much content that I absolutely adored, I decided that for my favorites list this time around, I wanted to do things a bit differently because if I dive into every single thing...

Writer/directors David Charbonier and Justin Powell follow up their tale of the all too real horrors of human trafficking, The Boy Behind the Door, with another tale of a young boy forced to fight for his life. In The Djinn the threat is a supernatural one.

“Zola” (Lionsgate) is the first film based on a viral Twitter thread (and probably won’t be the last), but it’s compelling viewing for reasons that have nothing to do with its provenance. Taylour Paige (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”) stars as A’Ziah “Zola” King, a waitress and sometimes stripper whose epic road trip to Florida hits one bump after another. It really is about the company you keep, and Zola is hanging out with a trouble-making dancer (Riley Keough), her hapless boyfriend (Nicholas Braun), and her enigmatic “manager” (Colman Domingo), and the twists are unpredictable, off-putting, and darkly hilarious in Janicza Bravo’s comedy.
Also available: Altered Innocence, one of the best-curated boutique labels around, delivers festival fave “A Dim Valley,” which asks the question, “What if a film about a cabin in the woods was a comedic meditation on love and not a horror movie?...

David Charbonier and Justin Powell’s horror about a mute boy who wishes for a voice is let down by its weak script and CGI
David Charbonier and Justin Powell’s debut The Boy Behind the Door was a well-executed abduction horror scored through with both tenderness and an uncommon cruel streak. Their follow-up, The Djinn, stars one of that film’s lead actors, Ezra Dewey, and locks him once again into the same kids-in-confinement genre. Despite light 80s stylings on the soundtrack, this is unfortunately a much weaker effort that both lacks internal logic and struggles for inspiration.
Dewey plays Dylan, a mute boy living with single father Michael (Rob Brownstein), who believes his disability has caused his mother’s absence from their life. So one night, when Michael is out doing his radio DJ gig, Dylan – who earlier found occultist tome the Book of Shadows at the back...

Ahead of The Influencer's release to digital services and VOD on September 14th from Breaking Glass Pictures, we have an exclusive look at the film just for Daily Dead readers!
"Breaking Glass Pictures is set to release the comedy thriller The Influencer, a satirical tale that examines the life of a vain social media influencer from first-time director Meghan Weinstein (producer of IFC Midnight's The Djinn).
"The Influencer is way more relevant now than when I wrote it three years ago, it reflects real life in ways I didn't expect", said Weinstein. "Watching how internet virality has led to such a dramatic spike in consumerism and waste with fast-fashion, or an obsession with how we appear online, it warps reality and values for so many people in an effort to distract us from the bigger issues going on in the world."

You can’t fault the writing-directing duo of David Charbonier and Justin Powell for reckless overreaching: Their first feature, “The Djinn”, stirred terror around just one boy in an apartment. Their second, which premiered at Fantastic Fest last fall, cautiously ups the ante to two boys and one whole house. “The Boy Behind the Door” is a more polished affair than its predecessor, with no supernatural aspect to the child endangerment this time. But . Shudder is adding the film to its streaming service July 29.
After a brief, alarming prologue, we properly meet our protagonists in a moment of calm beforehand — two 12-year-old lads playing catch in a field en route to a Little League game. When their ball rolls down an embankment, Kevin goes to retrieve it but does not return. Bobby (Lonnie Chavis from “This Is Us”) eventually goes looking for him, which doesn’t end well for him either.

"I'm scared, Bobby." "Me too, okay, but I'm not going to leave you." Shudder has unveiled the first official trailer for an indie horror film titled The Boy Behind the Door, which first premiered at both Fantastic Fest and AFI Fest last year in the fall. This is the second film from horror filmmakers David Charbonier & Justin Powell – they actually made this before making The Djinn, but The Djinn ended up being released before this one. In The Boy Behind the Door, a night of unimaginable terror awaits twelve-year-old Bobby and his best friend, Kevin, when they are abducted on their way home from school. They eventually manage to escape their confines, and embark upon a rescue mission to find save other and get the hell out of there. Hey everyone! As I mentioned the other day, I’ve been playing catch-up on a handful of indie horror reviews recently, and today, I’m back with two more reviews—The Djinn from directors David Charbonier and Justin Powell and the hilarious mockumentary 15 Things You Didn’t Know About Bigfoot (#1 Will Blow Your Mind!) by Zach Lamplugh, which are both currently streaming everywhere.
The Djinn: As someone who very much enjoyed their efforts on The Boy Behind the Door (which played at Fantastic Fest last September), I was excited to see what the filmmaking duo of Justin Powell and David Charbonier was going to do for their disturbing modern fairytale, The Djinn, and they did not disappoint. Though the country might be inching towards normalcy, the specialty box office has yet to make steps towards a total recovery. This weekend we failed to see a single film break a 100K gross.
Opening at 41 screens this week was IFC Midnight horror flick The Djinn. Co-directed by David Charbonier and Justin Powell, the film follows a mute twelve-year-old, Dylan Jacobs, as he discovers a mysterious book of spells inside his new apartment. Grieving the loss of his mother, and feeling isolated from everyone except for his father, Dylan performs a ritual that promises to deliver his heart’s desire: to have a voice.
Garnering an 88% on Rt, Djinn’s premiere saw a promising $1004 per screen average and brought home over 40 grand. Few films have been able to break this mark in the limited-release space during the pandemic.
Neon debuted marriage drama The Killing of Two Lovers this week.

Five new films, including “Spiral” (Lionsgate) from the lucrative “Saw” franchise, opened wide (at least 600 theaters) stateside. That is by far the biggest studio commitment to any week in a long time, with three at one time usually the most, and four rare.
Mid-May is normally prime for movie releases. This year, it’s Memorial Day when more prime titles will open. Optimism remains for then, but for now it’s treading water time. The expected much bigger “A Quiet Place Part II” (Paramount) along with “Cruella” (Disney) on May 28 will be a much better test of how close theaters are to providing grosses commensurate with their potential.
But a Top 10 of $24 million, with an overall take of perhaps $26 million, remains anemic considering the increased number of fresh films, combined with more theaters plus a general greater sense of safety in theaters. That sense is led above all by how “Spiral” did.

But a Top 10 of $24 million, with an overall take of perhaps $26 million, remains anemic considering the increased number of fresh films, combined with more theaters plus a general greater sense of safety in theaters. That sense is led above all by how “Spiral” did.

Writer/director duo David Charbonier and Justin Powell know how to get straight to the point without extracting any key elements that comprise an entertaining horror film. Their debut film The Boy Behind the Door was a terrifying and realistic depiction of friendship withstanding a traumatic childhood abduction. This year, the talented pair push the envelope […]

Roadside Attractions is releasing Finding You, a coming of age romantic drama based on Jenny B. Jones’ novel There You’ll Find Me and written and directed by Brian Baugh. The summer movie season continues on its road to recovery and normalcy, with four new wide releases hitting screens. Still, studios are holding back their big guns for now, as roughly one-third of theaters remain closed and capacity restrictions remain in place at many locations. The past few months have shown promising box office results from films such as Godzilla vs. Kong, Mortal Kombat, and Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, but it may still take some time before the box office returns to its former glory, with the major test coming over Memorial Day weekend when Cruella and A Quiet Place Part II face off.
Coming in the first place this weekend will likely be Spiral, the ninth entry in the Saw franchise, this time with a new take that puts Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson in the lead roles. Rock also executive produced and worked on the story for the film,...

Woe betide the grade-school-age lad who finds himself in a movie by writing-directing duo David Charbonier and Justin Powell: He may survive their plotlines, but it won’t be pretty. Their official first feature, “The Boy Behind the Door” (which will debut on streaming platform Shudder July 29) found two such kids fighting for their lives after being abducted by a stranger. In the new, more supernaturally tilted “The Djinn,” they’ve crafted another effective suspense exercise from the same basic premise, trapping a juvenile protagonist in a home with a malevolent nemesis.
. IFC Midnight is opening the feature in limited theaters as well as launching on digital and VOD platforms May 14.
Set in 1989 for no obvious reason beyond justifying the generic retro dreariness of the interior setting (or perhaps the vintage-synth aspects of Matthew James’ score), the movie opens with our first among many successively revealing glimpses of the...

"We start thinking about the things we're missing... and forget about the things we have." Holy hell this looks freaky! IFC Films has released an official trailer for the indie horror The Djinn, finally being released in May this year in both theaters + on VOD at the same time. A mute boy is trapped in his apartment with a sinister monster when he makes a wish to fulfill his heart's greatest desire. That is a simple setup, but this looks insanely creepy overall. This stars Ezra Dewey as Dylan, along with Rob Brownstein, Tevy Poe, Donald Pitts, and John Erickson. The apartment cinematography in this (by Dp Julián Estrada) is what makes it effectively scary. This really seems like it could end up a sleeper hit just because it's so disturbing. Here's the first official trailer for David Charbonier & Justin Powell's The Djinn, from IFC's YouTube: A...
