When you sit down to watch a documentary about the Beach Boys, you know what you want: to be immersed in the California dreamin’ of the group’s early surfin’-hit days, in the jaunty beauty of songs like “I Get Around” and “Help Me Rhonda,” and in the story of how Brian Wilson began to figure out a way to turn pop songs into miniature symphonies. You want to be immersed in the recording of “Pet Sounds,” in the Beach Boys’ rivalry with the Beatles, in the derailed masterpiece that was “Smile,” and in how Brian’s mental and emotional problems began to tear himself and the group apart. You want to know how the other Beach Boys, caught in the wilderness, found a way to put the group back together, though it’s almost like they became a different group. You want to see the Beach Boys’ saga...

In case you hadn’t noticed, we’re in the midst of a renaissance moment in pop-music documentaries. For a while, it seemed like they’d gone away, sucked up into the whole packaging-of-CDs-with-extras thing. But the streaming era, with its endless appetite for product, has been a boon to music docs. A lot of them, like “Zz Top: That Little Ol’ Band from Texas” (2019) or “Coldplay: A Head Full of Dreams” (2018) or last year’s exceptional “Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind,” fly mostly under the radar but find their fan base.
I, however, am always on the lookout for a music documentary that can get a whole lot of people buzzing because it’s about an artist who seems like an old friend, whose story we may already think we know, yet it re-assembles that story with enough hindsight big-picture vision that it can blow you...

The ninth installment of the “Grateful Dead Meet-Up at the Movies” will be seen in theaters around the world after Trafalgar Releasing signed on as the distribution partner for the annual event.
Rhino Entertainment, part of Warner Music Group, oversees Grateful Dead properties. Trafalgar replaces Fathom as its partner on the Grateful Dead event, which sees a concert from the iconic band and related footage shown in theaters for one night only each year. It has become a major draw for the group’s fans, known as Dead Heads.
The Meet-Up has traditionally run in the U.S. and there has been an attempt to launch it in the U.K., but on a different date from the U.S. The 2019 plans mark the first time it will play internationally and on the same day. Trafalgar is doing deals now and the film will play in Europe, North America, and Australasia.

Joni Mitchell’s birthday party is making its way to the big screen. Fans who lamented they weren’t able to attend a sold-out pair of all-star Mitchell tribute concerts in L.A. two months ago will get their chance when Trafalgar Releasing puts a filmed version of the shows into theaters nationwide for a one-night screening February 7.
“The Music Center Presents Joni 75: A Birthday Celebration” will be shown in cinemas in the U.S. and Mitchell’s native Canada, with tickets going on sale today. A soundtrack album is also going up for advance sale from Verve, with a March 1 release date.
The artists who participated in the Music Center shows Nov. 6-7 included contemporaries of Mitchell’s who also came along in the late 1960s, like James Taylor, Graham Nash and Kris Kristofferson, along with longtime friend Chaka Khan, who recorded with Mitchell in the ’70s. The...

Event cinema is coming of age as movie theaters increasingly look to live events and one-night screenings during the Sunday-Thursday corridor.
Bts concert documentary, “Burn the Stage: The Movie,” pulled in a record-setting $18 million in 79 territories at 2,650 movie theaters in three nights for Trafalgar Releasing — including $3.6 million in the U.S.
Peter Jackson’s World War I documentary “They Shall Not Grow Old” earned $2.3 million at 1,142 theaters in North America on Dec. 17 — marking the largest single night for a Fathom Events documentary. It will screen again at more than 900 locations on Dec. 27.
Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with comScore, said the numbers show that 2018 is a turning point for event cinema.
“Though event cinema has been there all along, quietly and consistently drawing huge audiences while offering up great content to draw folks to the multiplex, 2018 is the year that this unsung (and oft under appreciated) hero of box office...

Bts concert movie has now garnered the biggest-ever box office haul for an event cinema release. “Burn the Stage: The Movie” has raked in $18.5 million around the world, distributor Trafalgar Releasing told Variety.
The film follows Korean boy-band sensations Bts on their Wings tour, which was seen by more than 500,000 fans. The movie had already notched the attendance record after its original release window, usurping One Direction, which had held the top spot with its concert film, “One Direction: Where We Are.” But the two movies were essentially tied in terms of box office, both having grossed $14 million.
“Burn the Stage” has now surpassed “One Direction: Where We Are” to take sole possession of the box-office crown after it went back into theaters for encore screenings in the U.S., U.K. and other territories. It also had its premiere in India.
The new screenings boosted admissions to 2 million. Advance ticket sales topped 1 million.

K-pop sensation Bts’ “Burn the Stage: The Movie” is set for a global theatrical encore. Having bagged the event-cinema attendance record for its limited run earlier this month, the film is heading back into theaters around the world.
Distributor Trafalgar Releasing told Variety that there will be encore showings of “Burn the Stage: The Movie” in 1,400 cinemas globally across 2,696 screens. The U.K. release will be this weekend, followed by other territories over the next few weeks. There will be new screenings in the U.S., Australasia, Germany, Latin America and Indonesia, among other locations. The film will also have its debut in India.
In the U.S., tickets for the added Dec. 5-6 run go on sale Monday, with the AMC, Regal, and Cinemark chains all back on board.
The encore screenings mean that the film of Bts’ Wings Tour is likely to claim the all-time box office record for an event-cinema movie.

The golden age of the rock documentary faded out a long time ago. It’s now rare to see a concert film or a backstage pop portrait that attains the status of an event, like “Woodstock” or “Stop Making Sense” or “Truth or Dare.” But the form has never gone away. In a sense, it’s now everywhere: on streaming services and music channels, folded into album packages, a perpetual deluge of performance and home-movie snapshot geared to the insatiability of fans. In that light, the relevant question for any rock doc is whether it’s a compelling slice of artistry or a glorified piece of marketing.
“Coldplay: A Head Full of Dreams,” which played one night in theaters in 70 nations, where it grossed $3.5 million, and is now available on Amazon Prime, walks the line between those two possibilities. The film takes its title from Coldplay’s most recent album,...

Here’s a Coldplay documentary so charming and sincere that it will make you feel bad about mocking the band’s music for the last 16 years. Mat Whitecross’ “Coldplay: A Head Full of Dreams” is more than just a look inside the third-highest grossing concert tour in history, or an intimate portrait of one of the 21st century’s most successful rock bands; it’s also an infectiously upbeat biography of four blessed friends, who conquered the world on the strength of their belief in themselves and each other. In other words, this feature-length victory lap should be utterly insufferable from start to finish. It isn’t.

After following Coldplay around with a camera for 20 years, the footage Mat Whitecross carefully compiled of the beloved British band is finally about to have an audience. The documentary film “Coldplay: A Head Full of Dreams” will screen for one night only in theaters around the world on Nov. 14, before debuting on Amazon Prime Video on Friday the 16th. (Watch a snippet from the film in the video above.)
“I don’t think those four obviously could possibly have imagined what was going to happen to them,” Whitecross says of the band’s humble beginnings at University College of London, where Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland and Will Champion first met. Some of the earliest pre-Coldplay jams — when the band tried on other names for size, like Starfish — were captured on tape. “I was always filming everyone,” says Whitecross. “Gradually I think they just got used to me being around.

Chris Martin is in a good place now—but that wasn't the case fa few years ago. After his "conscious uncoupling" with Gwyneth Paltrow in 2014, the musician admits he felt "completely worthless and nothing to anybody" for a whole year. As Martin explains in the upcoming Amazon Prime documentary Coldplay: A Head Full of Dreams, he was already in pain when his marriage came to an end. "I was just like, 'I'm a mess,' really, because I can't enjoy the great things around me. Then, of course, I went through a break-up with Gwyneth," he says. "Listen, I'm never going to moan—I'm grateful for everything—but it was pretty touch and go." Martin's...
