A very promising start
Hillius8 June 2021
Set ten years into the future, Upload is an afterlife comedy, very much along the same lines as the early 90s afterlife comedy film Defending Your Life. Tons of fun comedy, great writing and solid acting by the leads make for one hilarious pilot.

Nathan is a man who seems to have it all, a nice family, a loving girlfriend, Ingrid, and a job as a computer coder which isn't specified as yet. He and a friend seem to be working on a project, yet it is Thanksgiving and he and his girlfriend have gathered with his family

Later, Nathan and Ingrid are headed back to her place for the night when she asks him to pick up some groceries as she goes ahead. On his way his self driving car seems to malfunction and he gets into a crash. At the hospital there is a funny sequence of events in which he ultimately chooses to get himself scanned into his girlfriends afterlife so that they can be together, but things don't work out so well.

Once in the afterlife, Nathan is at the mercy of his handler whom he calls Angel as he investigates his room and later the facility and grounds that have been fashioned as a lake resort. As this afterlife seems to be along the same lines as a VR construct, it suffers from many of the same problems inherent in the tech in some hilarious ways in the afterlife reality.

Overall this episode was a delight to watch, with some of the funniest dialogue this reviewer has heard in a long time. Appropriate for all ages except small children and the easily offended. 9/10.

Something fresh !!!

I'm glad Amazon has "fewer" shows that other platforms but invest in quality. I'm also glad that Greg Daniels is back with this new show.

The writing is interesting, good special FX although I'd remove the sex scenes.

So far not bad. Promising start that intruiges and rises questions
guest_to_movieland8 August 2022
In general it is a pretty amazing idea. Hope it'll be executed right in later episodes. Characters are not really very compelling to me but there's plenty of time to develop them so I'll just be waiting. Though liking episode and getting the fact that it's also a comedy (so it has few conventions), the way people are being uploaded seems a bit off. But maybe it's just me. Same goes for soundtrack that I liked only partially. As for the technical aspects, there're some not great visual effects but it's all understandable.

All in all, it's a pretty solid premier and I'm interested to know where the story goes from here.

Couldn't. Stop. Watching.

There are so many things about this show that grabbed my attention in the first episode. The concept is incredible! I love how the show just works and how all the ideas were perfectly executed. It's spectacular writing is what made the show.

I saw an ad for it a few days before it came out and I didn't really care for it, but once it dropped, I watched it in one night. I couldn't stop watching. It's amazing.

I watch many, MANY shows, and usually they have a similar premise, but this show is original, genius, and very funny.

The cast and crew did an amazing job!

I like where it's going

Warning: Spoilers
Plots that deal with being inside of a simulation or game go back to "Tron" but this show is current and puts new slants on virtual reality. I've seen the first two episodes and I really am compelled to binge the rest & see where it goes. Part of what makes it interesting is discovering this virtual reality along with the central character, his interactions with other Uploads, his Angel in the real world, and his girlfriend in the real world. There's reason to believe that the show is also a murder mystery, as he's not here by accident, but was a threat to the powers that make huge money with this virtual afterlife. It was a treat to see the actor who played Cancer Man, the cigarette smoking man, from The X-Files! Looking forward to the surprises to come!

Could writers try a little harder?

Warning: Spoilers
It's very reminiscent of Black Mirror. As a healthcare provider the medical portion really annoyed me. You aren't going to die from a punctured lung if you don't get surgery, and usually don't need surgery. That really turned me off. Hoping for the rest to get better.

Awesome!

This show is very well done. The underlying plot is nothing new but all the details set it apart. A lot of thought went into this. It's funny and well thought out. I love when writers take their time to speculate about the future and it evolves in a believable way. Tons of little Easter eggs and details make this show a fun watch. Good job 👍

Damn, this is bad writing.
arneshsengupta23 May 2020
Nice idea and would have loved to see it executed well. Instead of that we get the worst written and most unlikeable, irredeemable, uninteresting protagonists possible and under the flashy production there lurks a weak, weak script with no heart.

Welcome to Upload
Prismark1030 August 2020
The first episode superficially resembles The Good Place but it also masks a mystery comedy drama set in the near future.

We are introduced first to Nora who works for Lakeview. They have created a virtual reality place where people's digital self are uploaded.

Nathan is an arrogant coder with a hot girlfriend who is severely injured as his self driving car fails to obey his commands. Something has gone with its safety protocols and his car crashes into a truck. Nathan's girlfriend persuades him to sign up with Lakeview before he dies.

The first episode sees Nathan struggling with his after life and his time at Lakeview. Nora is effectively his guide from the real world.

However there are some computer files missing, Nathan's memory is hazy and his girlfriend in the living world seems to be acting shady.

There are some good special effects but at times I found this to be a patchy and uncertain episode. It wants to be a kooky offbeat comedy, Nathan is unlikeable and you wonder where they are going to go with him.

Although the mystery element is intriguing. Someone in Lakeview sees Nathan as a danger. It might be something to do with his coding work.

Interesting, but bad execution
imat-0415313 May 2020
The show tries really hard to be like a combo of The Good Place and Black Mirror. There's a lot of cringe moments where it's obvious the creators weren't even trying to be original. I also did not personally like the character development, especially for the female leads. Also, the futuristic aspect of it is very non futuristic and to be quite honest felt very stale and bland and not creative. In 2033 we will not be using VR headsets from 2010. I want to give it 5 stars but I can't because I really thought the advertising and given a more holistic view of the show does not come close to a 5. I am giving it 2 because the actors were good they were just handed really bad and cringe scripts.

Cliched plot, annoyingly bad science
rssutor4 June 2020
The plot of Upload steals liberally from several other, much better sci-fi stories. The plot twists are predictable. While this is fiction, the obvious basic science errors early on significantly detracted from my ability to suspend disbelief. The religious aspect is silly and unnecessary.
