As far as investigators go, Jim Rockford (James Garner) is a bit of a departure from the mostly-polished (Columbo excepted) detectives of television's first decade. A slouchily dressed detective who lived in a trailer and served time in San Quentin, Rockford was cool — if not always collected. "The Rockford Files" ran for six seasons on NBC beginning in 1974 and was later resurrected for a series of '90s TV movies. In that time, audiences were introduced not only to Rockford, but to a cast of supporting characters including his truck driver dad Rocky (Noah Beery Jr.), LAPD pal Becker (Joe Santos), and the con artist Angel (Stuart Margolin).
Garner passed away in 2014, and only a few "Rockford Files" castmates are still with us today. Those who are still around include notable recurring guest stars like famously mustachioed "Blue Bloods" star Tom Selleck, Egot-winning multi-hyphenate Rita Moreno, and "Happy Gilmore" director...

Dr. Julius Hibbert first appeared on "The Simpsons" in the episode "Bart the Daredevil". In that particular episode, Bart (Nancy Cartwright) was toying with the idea of being an Evel Knieval-type stunt performer, aiming to leap over Springfield Gorge on a skateboard. As a warning, Bart was taken to see Dr. Hibbert who took the boy to a special wing of Springfield hospital. In it were nothing but children who had injured themselves after imitating stunts they saw on TV. "I won't even subject you to the horrors of our Three Stooges ward," Dr. Hibbert gravely intones.
From 1990 through 2021, Dr. Hibbert was played by Harry Shearer. When viewers became sensitive to how many white actors have played animated Black characters throughout the history of animation, Shearer stepped aside and Kevin Michael Richardson took over the role.
Dr. Hibbert was kindly, bemused, but possessed of a strangely cold bedside manner. When Bart comes to see Dr.

From the early days at the Edinburgh Fringe to recognition as a gifted character actor with comedy chops, Lolly Adefope has always cherished the camaraderie of the cast
Switch on any of your favourite comedies from the last five years and there’s Lolly Adefope, glamorous and wry, not just stealing the show, but holding it aloft as she marches out of the shop to the sound of rapturous alarms. She was Lady Daphne in Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn, exquisitely disgusted by her husband and the aristocratic world in which she has landed and, in fact, by everything. Zackary Drucker will direct the upcoming biopic about Andy Warhol superstar Candy Darling starring Hari Nef. John Cameron Mitchell also joins the untitled film about the transgender icon as executive producer.
It was previously announced that Nef (“Barbie”) will star in the movie.
The film traces Darling’s childhood in Long Island through her years alongside underground icons Holly Woodlawn and Jackie Curtis in Warhol’s Factory scene, and her influence on musicians including Lou Reed, the Velvet Underground and Patti Smith. She was immortalized in popular songs including Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side” and The Velvet Underground’s “Candy Says.”
Darling also starred in Warhol’s cult film “Women In Revolt” before she died of leukemia in 1974 at age 29.
“I’ve dedicated my life and career to amplifying the history of trans and queer icons, and their impact in shaping art and culture for everyone,” Drucker said in a statement.

In “We Strangers,” Rayelle (Kirby) confesses to her mother (Tina Lifford) that she doesn’t have dreams. Perhaps she doesn’t have time for them, or else she’s simply too exhausted to hang onto anything else in her head after spending her days as a cleaning lady, monitoring her every move so as not to become any part of the mess she picks up for other people. Still, this isn’t to say she can’t have fantasies in Anu Valia’s absorbing character study, except like everything else her life, they’re not for herself when her observational skills lead some to think she’s psychic.
After honing her craft directing prestige TV shows such as “The Afterparty” and “Shrill,” Valia makes an aesthetically striking feature debut that may impress even more with the clear eyes she brings to the trickle effect of privilege, envisioning the ability to...

The 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards are in full swing, with striking “blue carpet” styles to match.
The annual awards ceremony took place Sunday, February 25 in Santa Monica, California, with the casts from “All of Us Strangers,” “Passages,” “Eileen,” “American Fiction,” “The Holdovers,” and more in attendance. The ceremony is hosted by “SNL” alum and “Shrill” creator Aidy Bryant, and was livestreamed on IMDb’s YouTube channel.
On the heels of the buzzy SAG Awards just the night before and even closer to the 2024 Oscars this time around due to the SAG-AFTRA strike in 2023, the Spirit Awards are the place to be seen on the indie film scene. Oscar-nominated films “American Fiction,” “May December,” and “Past Lives” lead the Spirit Award nominations with five nods each, including in the Best Feature category.
To note, the budget cap of $30 million productions made Oscar heavyweights “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,...

“Honestly,” says Aidy Bryant. “I never want to do anything.” The comedian, who left Saturday Night Live in 2022 after 10 years on the show, enjoys being picky in her work. So when her team approached with an offer to host the Spirit Awards, the first thing she asked herself was whether the gig was worth it. “These awards, and what they’re about, really do touch my heart,” she says. “There’s a kind of yuckiness in Hollywood sometimes, and there’s something pure and beautiful about supporting independent film.” Saying yes also gave her an excuse to call up a few of her favorite former co-workers for help writing — Bryant enlisted Sudi Green, whom she wrote with on Shrill, and frequent sketch collaborator Fran Gillespie. Ahead of the show, Bryant spoke to THR about the current Hollywood landscape and what she’ll be doing before the big show.

Tim Robinson, the comedian behind sketch series I Think You Should Leave, is starring in Friendship, along with Paul Rudd and Kate Mara. The indie comedy is marking the feature directorial debut of Andrew DeYoung, the helmer known for his work on such series as Our Flag Means Death and PEN15.
J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, the producing duo behind horror hit Barbarian, are producing the comedy, which is now in production, with Fifth Season, the financier-distribution-production outfit behind recent movies Flora and Son and 80 for Brady. Fifth Season, formerly named Endeavor Content, is also financing.
Written by DeYoung, Friendship centers on a mild-mannered man named Craig, whose life is perfectly balanced, with Subway sandwiches and Marvel movies, a job he enjoys and a happy home life with a wife and son. That life is upended with the arrival in the neighborhood by a weatherman, played by Rudd. Mysterious yet friendly,...

Tim Robinson (I Think You Should Leave), Paul Rudd (Only Murders in the Building) and Kate Mara (Class of ’09) have been set to star in Friendship, a new comedy from Fifth Season and BoulderLight Pictures.
Pic centers on Craig Waterman (Robinson), who enjoys his life. He likes New Balance shoes, Subway sandwiches, and Marvel movies. He lives in the suburbs with his wife, Tami, and son, Steven. He’s happy to work at Universal Digital, a company that helps brands make their products more habit-forming. Craig sees no reason to change anything or make new friends… until weatherman Brian moves into the neighborhood. Mysterious yet friendly, macho but vulnerable, Brian (Rudd) transforms everything for Craig, but Craig’s obsessive and childlike nature threatens to ruin the friendship, and possibly everything else in his life.
Friendship is the first feature from director Andrew DeYoung, who also penned the script and is exec producing alongside Tracy Rosenblum.

One need only glance at the leading men and women of any given era to see Hollywood's perennial beauty standards. Most actors will know the pressure of keeping fit and aesthetic, especially after the mainstreaming of gym and fitness culture in the late 20th century. Take Superman, for example. Christopher Reeve was a tall and athletic man, but compared to Henry Cavill's cast iron physique, his rangy costume looks slightly pedestrian. It's not all about "looking good," of course. Some actors have drastically changed their bodies to better portray their characters, such as Robert De Niro in "Raging Bull," Christian Bale in "The Machinist," Matthew McConaughey in "Dallas Buyers Club," and Tom Hanks in "Cast Away."
Still, "looking good" is a prerequisite for many actors, and they often must obey the wishes of producers, directors, and casting managers, who are known to ask for weight loss, dental work, and even plastic surgery.

Hulu may have started out as the redheaded stepchild of the streamers back in Netflix’s heyday, but it has stuck around long enough to have firmly established itself as one of the old standbys. It follows, then, that Hulu would have a veritable fount of LGBTQ content ready to compete with the robust queer catalogues available to subscribers of Netflix, HBO, and other platforms.
A brief perusal of Hulu’s LGBTQ section doesn’t disappoint, but digging in deeper will give you the best chance at a genuinely memorable watch. Right now, the Disney-backed streamer is hosting popular queer television classics, like “The L Word,” “My So-Called Life,” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” alongside fresher fare, including “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay” and “Killing Eve.” Recent Hulu originals, such as “Love, Victor” and “Shrill,” deserve singling out, if only because you know they’re buzz-worthy and readily available on the service.

As we made abundantly clear earlier this week, the Film Independent Spirit Awards are—to coin a phrase—a safe space for comedy. From the early quips of a Buck Henry or Kevin Pollack to more recent outings by laughmongers ranging from A (Fred Armisen) to V (Melissa Villaseñor), only the funniest 1% of carbon-based lifeforms are permitted to direct awards show traffic from our proprietary beachfront dais.

TBS original comedy “Miracle Workers” has been canceled after four seasons, Variety has confirmed. The cancellation comes just months after the series finale aired in August.
Set in a post-apocalyptic future, Season 4 (aptly titled “End Times”) of the anthology comedy picked up with wasteland warrior (Daniel Radcliffe) and a ruthless warlord (Geraldine Viswanathan) as they face the most dystopian nightmare of all: settling down in the suburbs. “Together they navigate the existential horrors of married life and small-town living, all under the dubious guidance of a wealthy junk trader (Steve Buscemi),” reads the description. Previous seasons covered the Oregon Trail and the Dark Ages.
In addition to Radcliffe and Viswanathan, the series also starred Karan Soni (“Deadpool”) and Jon Bass (“She-Hulk: Attorney at Law”), and Karan Soni. Exclusive: Comedic multi-hyphenate Julio Torres (A24’s Problemista) has struck a deal with Ars Nova, the Off-Broadway, non-profit theater in NYC, that will see them partner to identify, develop, and commission full-length projects from early-career comedy artists.
The collaboration further expands Ars Nova’s two-decade commitment to new comedy at a time when support systems for NYC-based artists have decreased. Under the partnership, Torres and Ars Nova will look to provide comedians with opportunities for development and production outside of the traditional model of sketch shows and 10-minute sets. They’ll offer funding up front to create brand new, uniquely theatrical shows, while providing mentorship and development resources to the artists involved, the first set for a commission being Ars Nova Vision Residency Alum River L. Ramirez. Others will be announced at a later date.
To celebrate the alliance, Torres will return to the Ars Nova stage on October 26 to host Showgasm.

“I think it’s cyclical,” offers Elizabeth Banks. “Everything has its moment, goes away, and comes back.”
The wildly prolific actress, who’s appeared in everything from Wet Hot American Summer and the original Spider-Man films to The 40-Year-Old Virgin and The Hunger Games franchise, is talking about the YA craze she found herself smack in the middle of about a decade ago, when horny tween vampires and a bow-wielding female revolutionary dominated the zeitgeist.
Toy fads don’t seem so cyclical. Their appeal is as mercurial as the children who covet them.

"Seize Them!" is coming, and we couldn't be more excited. This upcoming British comedy - much like Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott's latest venture with their highly anticipated film "Strangers" - boasts the best of the UK and Ireland's talent. "Bridgerton"'s Nicola Coughlan, "Sex Education"'s Aimee Lou Wood, and "Shrill"'s Lolly Adefope will be joining forces as part of this medieval-set movie.
Whilst Coughlan has already served us plenty Barbiecore outfit inspiration for the press run as part of her supporting role in Greta Gerwig's "Barbie," we certainly can't wait to see her as the leading lady alongside the all-star cast for this comedy.
Keep reading for all of the details we know so far about "Seize Them!" - including the plot and release date.

“Los Espookys” creator and star Julio Torres is headed for the big screen in the charming first trailer for his new film “Problemista,” which he wrote, stars in and directed for A24.
Torres plays Alejandro, an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador who moves to New York City to fulfill his dream. But as the time on his work visa runs out, he takes a job as an assistant to an erratic art world outcast (played by Tilda Swinton).
The film is Torres’ take on the U.S. immigration system and the realities of the “American Dream,” all with his signature wit and charming comedic spin. A24 helped take the careers of Ari Aster (“Hereditary”), Lulu Wang (“The Farewell”) and Janicza Bravo (“Zola”) to new heights, and the studio is coming off massive Oscar wins for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” so their track record certainly bodes well for Torres.

In early 2023, Peacock killed its free, fully ad-supported tier in favor of an ad-free plan at $9.99 and a with-ads option at $4.99. As it turns out, for most people the value of watching Peacock is less than five bucks a month.
According to new data from research firm Antenna, Peacock’s ad-supported plan has driven 69 percent of the streamer’s signups in 2023. Compare that with the industry’s average: one-third of streaming consumers overall have chosen an ad-supported option (where available) this year.
Antenna also found that the way consumers select a plan doesn’t tie to household income or any other single demographic. Selection of a plan seems to be tied more to the service itself, including its content, ad integration, and ad load.
A Peacock insider told IndieWire the “vast majority” of Peacock’s 22 million paid subs as of March 31, 2023 are on its cheaper “Premium” plan. (The Peacock sign-up...

Joan is Awful is the first episode of the sixth season of Black Mirror. It is written by Charlie Brooker, directed by Ally Pankiw and stars Salma Hayek, Annie Murphy, and Michael Cera.
This episode is more amusing than terrifying and features Salma Hayek (who mocks her own diction) playing an actress in a series that parodies itself. It is a charming and humorous episode that serves as an excellent appetizer for this sixth season.
Did you expect Charlie Brooker not to take AI beyond imagination? Wait until the end of the episode, where his idea of personalized content for Netflix is quite curious and, although comedic, also frightening.
Storyline

In this week’s “Yellowjackets” episode, which hit Showtime streaming on Friday, Tony-winning singer and actor John Cameron Mitchell makes a surprise cameo as part of Misty (Christina Ricci)’s out-of-body experience in a sensory deprivation tank. [Spoilers for episode 2.07, “Burial” follow]
“I’m the go-to one-off singer/guest star for shows now,” Mitchell quipped in a Zoom interview with TheWrap. Mitchell, who rose to fame for writing and starring in the stage musical and subsequent film “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” has appeared recently in “The Sandman” and costars in Apple TV+’s “City on Fire,” which premieres Sunday.
In previous “Yellowjackets”episodes, we learned that Misty and her fellow Citizen Detective Walter (Elijah Wood) both love showtunes, so a Broadway-style fantasy sequence isn’t entirely out of left field. Aidy Bryant is set to star in “Lonely Hearts Club,” a dramedy series based on an episode of the Crime Junkies podcast, currently in the works at Peacock. “Beau Is Afraid” filmmaker Ari Aster is executive producing the project.
Set in the late 1940s, “Lonely Hearts Club” is described as a darkly comedic true crime thriller about a lonely woman who falls in love with a dim but handsome con man. Together they form an unlikely “Loser-Bonnie-and-Clyde”-style partnership that ends in lies, murder and the electric chair.
The show is based on an episode of Ashley Flowers’ Crime Junkie podcast entitled “Infamous: The ‘Lonely Hearts’ Killers.”
Bryant is re-teaming with Rob Klein, former head writer of “Saturday Night Live” and executive producer on Bryant’s Hulu series “Shrill,” for the project. Klein and Bryant will write and executive produce “Lonely Hearts Club.” Ashley Flowers and Kevin Mills are...

Pete Davidson is just as famous for his personal life as his acting career, so it’s only fitting that his first leading television role sees him playing himself. The upcoming Peacock comedy “Bupkis” stars Davidson as Davidson, parodying the surreal levels of fame he has achieved in recent years with the help of some A-list friends.
The show is similar to Davidson’s 2020 film “The King of Staten Island,” which was directed by Judd Apatow and saw the former “Saturday Night Live” cast member in a role heavily inspired by his own background. Unlike that film though, “Bupkis” sees Davidson explicitly play a fictionalized version of himself, juggling acting roles, antics in the celebrity world, tabloid rumors, and his relationships with his working class family from Staten Island.
The trailer features many nods to real life tabloid stories and rumors involving Davidson, including his sister complaining about speculation about the star’s penis size.

Aidy Bryant is a name that most people associate with her tenure as a cast member on Saturday Night Live. However, her success extends far beyond that. She is an accomplished actor, comedian, and writer who has managed to carve out a successful career for herself. Over the course of its five-season run, "Schitt's Creek" grew from a quiet sitcom with a sizable following to a full-blown cultural phenomenon. It's become impossible to remember life before Annie Murphy first uttered the words "Ew, David" and hardly a day goes by that I don't see a gif of Dan Levy looking absolutely disgusted as David. While the series will no doubt hold up as a heartwarming and hilarious rewatch until the end of time, the door has (mostly) closed on the Rose family hijinks, leaving audiences to wonder: what comes next for writer, co-creator, and star Dan Levy?
The answer is, unsurprisingly, a lot. Given the massive success of "Schitt's Creek" — which includes setting the Emmy record for most wins in a single season for a comedy series — the rush to produce Levy's next project was very real. He was courted and eventually signed a TV and movie deal with Netflix.

HBO has greenlit comedy series “Little Films” (working title) from creator, director, star and executive producer Julio Torres.
Over six episodes, Torres tells the tale of when he lost a little golden oyster. For Variety’s latest issue, we asked Aidy Bryant to write a tribute to Bowen Yang, one of 53 people to make our New Power of New York list. For the full list, click here.
Not to sound like a cigar-in-mouth Hollywood blowhard, but Bowen Yang is a star. Bowen is effortlessly funny and a pillar at “Saturday Night Live.” Bowen is the emotional heart of “Fire Island.” Bowen looks perfectly placed on a red carpet in platform boots — a hunk for the ages.
To audiences and our industry, he feels like an old friend — like he belongs, and we need him. So it’s easy to forget that Bowen is still new. He’s just starting his fourth year on “SNL.” I don’t mean this to diminish him. What I mean is, we have only had our first glances at his talent, just barely breaking the surface of what he’s capable of.

As Lorne Michaels tells it, Saturday Night Live’s most significant cast shakeup in a generation is a product of the pandemic.
In interviews after the Emmy Awards and with The New York Times, Michaels noted that in normal times, the likes of Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant and Pete Davidson might have left SNL in 2020 or 2021 to pursue other work.

Following Pete Davidson's exit from the long-running sketch series, three of his castmates departed in the season 47 finale as well. Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, and Kyle Mooney all said goodbye to Studio 8H throughout the episode, which was hosted by "Russian Doll" star Natasha Lyonne.
All four of the actors had been on the show for eight or more seasons. That's an impressive feat, especially given how much work they've each done beyond "SNL" during their time as cast members. Davidson, who joined the series in 2014 when he was just 20 years old, is now a certified movie star thanks to films like "The King of Staten Island" and "Suicide Squad." Meanwhile, Bryant co-created and starred in Hulu's "Shrill," while McKinnon has taken on lead roles in movies like "The Spy Who Dumped Me," the "Ghostbusters" reboot,...
