Shortlisted for the Academy Awards in the international feature film category, Fernando León de Aranoa’s “The Good Boss” capped a record 20 Spanish Academy Goya nominations by scoring best picture and actor for Javier Bardem at Saturday’s Goya prize ceremony.
The prizes marked both Leon and Bardem’s seventh Goya wins. Produced by El Reposado and The Mediapro Studio, and a workplace dramedy skewering the abuse of power practised by a seemingly benign factory owner, “The Good Boss” also won best director and original screenplay for León, as well as best score and editing.
Blanca Portillo beat out “Parallel Mothers’” Oscar-nominated Penélope Cruz, thanks to Portillo’s powerful performance as Maixabel Lasa, the real life widow of former Basque Country governor Juan Mari Jauregui who agreed in 2011 to meet one of his Eta killers. Her forgiveness, and Portillo’s portrait, has touched a large nerve in Spain.

Already selected as this year’s Spanish Best International Feature Film submission for the Oscars, Fernando León de Aranoa’s dark workplace comedy “The Good Boss,” starring Javier Bardem, has set a new record for most Spanish Academy Goya Award nominations with 20, ahead of Icíar Bollaín’s standout Basque drama “Maixabel” with 14 and Pedro Almodóvar’s “Parallel Mothers,” which secured eight.
The 20 nominations include: Best picture, director, original screenplay, original music, lead actor, three nominations for supporting actor, supporting actress, two nominations for best new male actor and one for best new female actor, production design, cinematography, editing, art direction, costume design, makeup, sound design and special effects. It’s a total which breaks an almost 30-year-old record held by Imanol Uribe’s “Numbered Days,” which received 19 nominations in 1994.
León’s latest, produced by The Mediapro Studio and Reposado PC, is a return to a fruitful partnership between the director and his leading man.

“Isaac”, the debut feature by Catalan producer-director duo Ángeles Hernández and David Matamoros, has been acquired by France’s top Queer cinema distributor Outplay Films for France, Austria and Switzerland.
The deal was put through by the film’s sale agent Alief Films at this year’s Cannes Film Market.
Hernández and Matamoros, the co-producers of Netflix horror hit “The Platform, also produced “Isaac” via their Barcelona-based shingle Mr. Miyagi Films and co-wrote the script with Antonio Hernández Centeno, based on his play “El día que nació Isaac”.
“”Isaac” is a very beautiful film that is different to what we are used to in matters of LGBTQ+ stories. The impossibility of being able to speak out and loud about who you really are felt very strong in the film,” said Diego Carazo-Migerel, head of international sales & acquisitions at Outplay.

At the beginning of 2020, we heard an astrologer say that it would be "a year like no other." We thought they meant that in a good way. We were very, very wrong.
Getting to the end of 2020 has been a challenge similar to surviving 12 levels of Jumanji, and we did it, but not without a little help along the way.
In between murder hornets, monkeys overrunning cities in Thailand, political turmoil, and, oh yeah, let's not forget the pandemic, we TV Fanatics did what we do best. We watched TV.
We binged dramas, comedies, and reality TV. We found new shows and revisited old favorites, and we're not embarrassed to say that TV got us through this terrible, horrible, very bad year.
So, if you still need something to help you ride out the latest surge or simply want to find a great show you've never watched before, check out...

For the first time in a while, Netflix is adding no new titles today, so let’s instead take the opportunity to recap what’s gone up on the streaming site over the past week, from Saturday, August 1st to Saturday, August 8th. As that encompasses the first day of the month, there was a huge amount of fresh content added to Netflix’s library over this period. To be exact, there were 49 movies and 24 TV shows.
On the film side of things, this haul includes many an acclaimed or cult favorite flick from across the decades in all kinds of genres. Netflix‘s new releases for August 2020 should be a hell of a good time.
How else are we supposed to describe the month that features the long-awaited arrival of Lucifer season 5? Yes, ol’ Lucy finally returns on August 21 for what is now the penultimate season of the show.
While Lucifer is the main highlight of Netflix’s original offerings on August, that doesn’t mean there aren’t some other intriguing options to stream. The Rain season 3 arrives on August 6, Wizards: Tales of Arcadia on August 7, and Teenage Bounty Hunters on August 14. That’s not even to mention a potential blockbuster movie in the form of the Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt starring Project Power.
In August, Netflix also continues its high-profile poaching of other worthwhile properties as well. August sees the arrival of both The Legend of Korra and Cobra Kai, opening up two worthwhile series to an even wider streaming audience.

The film is based on the Spanish play “El día que nació Isaac” by Antonio Hernández Centeno, who is also known for his work on such Spanish series as Amazon’s “Caronte” and Netflix’s “Unauthorized Living.”
Described as “a quirky Dogma 95-style story of love and gender fluidity,” “Isaac” focuses on two old friends, Denis and Nacho, who meet again years after having had an intense relationship as teenagers. Now in relationships with their respective partners, the two couples grow close and end up fulfilling each other’s needs.
Hernández and Matamorros co-directed the pic and produced via their Barcelona-based Mr. Miyagi Films.
Toplining the cast are Ivan Sanchez and Pepe Ocio, both of whom currently star in hit Netflix shows “You Cannot Hide” and “High Seas,...

At the end of the last volume, it’s safe to say that I found things a little disappointing because it’s where I really saw the cliched fanfiction tropes and it came across as fan service fluff until the very end of Vol.2. That said, this series of chapters in the story definitely put things back on the right track because it focuses a lot more on character and plot development.
Strings starts with Max revealing her powers to Chloe and Rachel so the weight she was carrying is now gone from her shoulders and Max wants to find a way back to her reality or string in the universe. It’s a slow start because the first ten pages or so are briefing Chloe and Rachel on things that we are already familiar with.

“La Casa de Papel” (“Money Heist”) Part 3 was the most-watched content on Netflix in 2019 across major European markets, including France, Spain and Italy, according to information released Monday by the streaming giant. In the U.K., however, both Alex Pina’s “La Casa de Papel” and, more curiously, British royal family series “The Crown” were missing from Netflix’s top 10 list, with the most popular release of 2019 being “The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann,” the true-crime documentary about a British girl who went missing during a vacation with her parents in Portugal more than a decade ago.
The other local titles included on the U.K. chart include Ricky Gervais’ “After Life,” the David Attenborough-fronted natural history series “Our Planet” and the Netflix flagship original “Sex Education,” which also performed well in the rest of Europe. “Stranger Things 3” also showed up in the top 10 across Europe.

Madrid — Netflix CEO Reed Hastings officially inaugurated the U.S. streaming giant’s Madrid Production Hub, its first European production center, on Thursday morning.
While the hub’s first three sound stages look impressively efficient, they are designed principally for TV work, not gargantuan movie blockbuster production.
So it was Netflix’s plans for Spanish production which rreally made an impact at the inauguration. Francisco Ramos, Netflix vice president original contents, revealed two new Spanish series: “El Inocente,” created by Oriol Paulo, produced by Belén Atienza and Sandra Hermida; and “Los favoritos de Midas,” co-creted by Mateo Gil, starring Luis Tosar, and produced by Adrián Guerra and Nuria Valls at Nostromo Pictures.
Based on a best-seller by Harlan Coben, written by Jordi Vallejo, Paulo and Guillém Clúa, “El inocente” turns on an ex-con, Mateo, who nine years before accidentally killed a man, who, now out of jail, and with his...

Madrid — Netflix’s “High Seas,” its fourth Spanish Original Series, produced by “Velvet’s” Bambú Producciones, initiated rehearsals in October. Netflix has yet to announce an exact release date this year.
But, following on “Cable Girls,” Netflix’s first Spanish original and another Bambú production, “Elite,” and “Money Heist” (“La casa de papel”), expectation is high. Variety visited the set in late January and interviewed Bambú founder and lead writer Ramón Campos. Following, five takes on the upcoming Netflix Original:
1.Mystery And, As Always, Melodrama
Created by Campos and Gemma R. Niera, “High Seas” (“Alta Mar”) is set in the late 1940s on a luxury transatlantic liner carrying passengers from Spain to Brazil. A murder is committed – of a woman passenger not on the passenger list and whom no one remembers. Only one thing seems certain: The murderer cannot leave the ship. With producer-partner Teresa Fernández-Valdés, Campos broke out internationally...

It’s no coincidence that Netflix chose Madrid for its first European production hub.
Spanish scribe Alex Pina and network Atresmedia created “Money Heist,” Netflix’s most-watched non-English language series ever. Telefonica’s Movistar Plus has partnered with Netflix and is making by far the biggest drive into high-end series of any telco in Europe.
Having produced “Money Heist” and “Velvet,” a huge hit in Latin America, Atresmedia has launched Atresmedia Studios, aimed at producing content for third-party VOD and pay-tv partners worldwide. Its first order, from Movistar Plus, is an emotional thriller called “The Pier” from Vancouver Media’s Pina and Esther Martinez Lobato and will be one of the only two Mipcom world premiere TV screenings.
Meanwhile, “The Young Pope’s” Spanish partner Mediapro has a series in development, “A Dry Run,” with “The Wire’s” David Simon.
