- A film noir with a subplot about Guantanamo and torture, music by Bob Dylan
- Andrew, Haydon and Doris plan a burglary. Doris is Haydon's girlfriend, but flirts with Andrew. When Haydon goes to jail, Andrew drives off with Doris. Andrew has nightmares- about Guantanamo and torture. Scenes from Visconti's film Lo Straniero, based on the novel by Camus, augment the story. When Haydon is released from jail, the three meet up again at Hotel Refinement, an ancient elegant mansion. Relations are strained among the three, relieved by Haydon planning a new burglary with the Arab he meets in jail. Doris goes back to Haydon, and Andrew returns to his dull life of selling real estate. Bob Dylan- His song "Political World" underlines the theme of torture and Guantanamo. His song "Heart of Mine" counterpoints the new lovers driving off.—Carol Wolman, Producer
- Hayden and Doris, with their friend Andrew, are planning a heist. They play cards and talk about Camus' novel "The Stranger". HAYDEN: What's all the fuss about, I never liked my mother either. And why not shoot the Arab He was in the way, wasn't he? Hayden slaps down a card and leans back in his chair ANDREW: How did we get on this? HAYDEN: Isn't that what Camus was writing about? Doris gives ANDREW one of her meaningful looks. DORIS: What do you think of all that, Andrew? ANDREW: About his mother? HAYDEN: Never mind my mother. ANDREW: Well, the provocation might have been more racist. The Arab's not even a person just an object like shooting at a signpost. DORIS: Provocation? Is that what you said?! If they're pouring hot lead up your ass in Guantanamo you might not like it either. ANDREW VO: "I guess I'm not following," I said. We had been talking about The Stranger by Albert Camus and how appropriate it seems in today's world. Andrew picks up the car, and the three of them meet at a mansion at night, for the heist. The heist goes bad, and Hayden goes to prison, where he meets an Arab. They watch Visconti's film "The Stranger" on TV. INT. PRISON REC. ROOM - DAY Hayden sits watching TV, one or two other prisoners, sit talking in a corner of the room. The Arab enters with a bucket and mop, and begins mopping the floor. HAYDEN: (continues watching TV) Get the lead out. ARAB: Am I being paid for this? If they had you in Guantanamo, you wouldn't be moving so well either. Would you care to draw up your feet, so that I might complete these maneuvers? HAYDEN: What? ARAB: Move the feet! Hayden moves his feet. (The movie on TV is Visconti's (The Stranger) ARAB: (CONT'D) (puts the mop in the bucket and sits down) He is going to shoot that man, as though he is merely a clay pigeon. HAYDEN: You've seen this before. ARAB: They speak of an eye for an eye. Do you know why they say that? HAYDEN: No, and I don't care. ARAB: It is in the Koran. And you will find it also in the Bible. HAYDEN: Good. I'm watching this, do you mind? They watch for a while. ARAB: See? There he is being shot. HAYDEN: (stands abruptly) Why don't you tell me how it ends? ARAB: Sure. The man is put on trial, but no one believes he ever loved his mother. So he is executed for that. And that is wrong. Do you know why? Hayden stares at him. ARAB: . Because only the Creator has the right to take life. Meanwhile, Andrew and Doris skip town, cleaning out the place they have been staying, and tossing Camus' novel into the trash. They travel down the coast and have an affair. When Hayden is released from prison, they meet him at Hotel Refinement, a ramshackle old building. The Arab is there too, planning a new heist with Hayden. Doris goes back to Hayden, and Andrew goes back to his old job, selling real estate. Years later, he sees a news item that Doris, Hayden and the Arab were apprehended while robbing a rich mansion. The Arab was shot and killed while trying to escape.
