Telephones were up and running in Manhattan by 1877, and, although ladies and gentlemen did send footmen carrying notes to people on their guest lists until the Second World War, they could have used the phones to communicate in urgent cases, like a cancelled elopement, or even routinely. Still, footmen and relatives dispatched in haste do make for better drama.
