Indonesian horror movies including Satan’s Slaves, May the Devil Take You, and Impetigore have been making waves in recent years, and the latest one to pop up on our radar is titled Respati. Variety shares the above first look image today, along with some new info.
Variety reports, “Barunson E&a, the production company behind Korean Oscar-winner Parasite, is investing in Base Entertainment’s upcoming Indonesian horror film Respati.”
The site notes that Barunson E&a will “take on worldwide sales duties and pre-sell rights at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin,” which takes place later this month.
The upcoming film tells the story of a teenager with the ability to enter other people’s dreams. When he witnesses a dark spirit taking people’s lives in their dreams, he quickly realizes that it’s related to the mysterious deaths that are happening in the real world.
Sidharta Tata directed Respati.

Directed by Azhar Kinoi Lubis, the Indonesian horror film Spirit Doll revolves around the story of an actress, Dara, who is being haunted by a spirit doll. The film is replete with elements of the supernatural, black magic, and mystery. How the thread of jealousy is woven into a web for the protagonist has been showcased in the film. The death of Dara’s daughter brings about a psychological blow, causing her to become more emotionally vulnerable, and that is when her household and personal life are attacked by her secret rival. Starring actors like Anya Geraldine, Anantya Rezki, Samuel Rizal, and others, the story is sure to give the audience goosebumps. Asian horror films like Kuntilanak, May the Devil Take You, and Satan’s Slaves are similar to this film in terms of the intensity. Will Dara be able to regain her senses and use the eyes of the heart...

It’s a new month, and we’re officially in the back half of 2023. That also means that it’s a new month for streaming. Netflix’s horror offerings might be light when it comes to new releases, the most notable of which is Bird Box Barcelona, set to debut on the streaming service on July 14.
Whether you’re looking for underseen horror gems on Netflix or revisiting spooky favorites, here are ten great horror movies you can stream on Netflix in July.

"The whole town's acting bizarre!" Uncork'd Ent. has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror thriller film called The Devil Comes at Night, which is yet another "devil" horror title along with I Saw the Devil, Along Came the Devil, Shame the Devil, Prey for the Devil, May the Devil Take You, etc. This premiered last year and will be out on VOD directly in June to watch, heading straight-to-video this summer. A washed up boxer named Ben searching for his inheritance must fight for his own life when he's trapped in his deceased father's farmhouse by a local cannibal cult. So now they're just taking overused tropes from different genres and mashing them up! The Devil Comes at Night stars Ryan Allen, Adrienne Kress, Jason Martorino, Elias Zarou, Shawn Ahmed, Todd Campbell, and Dana Fradkin. This looks as terrible as they come, it makes sense they're dumping this one on video right away.

Exclusive: A reboot of the 1992 hit Steven Seagal action movie Under Siege is underway at Warner Bros. with Timo Tjahjanto directing and Umair Aleem writing. The duo, I hear, collaborated and developed the pitch together with the movie being planned to stream on HBO Max.
There’s no word yet if Seagal will reprise his role as Casey Ryback, the ex-Navy Seal turned cook who was the only person in that movie to stop a group of terrorists from taking control of a U.S. battleship. The movie, directed by Andrew Davis, grossed over $156M WW when it was released and spawned a 1995 sequel Under Siege 2: Dark Territory which minted over $104M-plus WW. Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey starred in the first movie.

New to Shudder this week is the Indonesian horror film The Queen of Black Magic. Written by Joko Anwar and directed by Kimo Stamboel, this film joins the ranks of Shudder’s other amazing Indonesian offerings and offers viewers an experience that is both horrifying and intriguing.
Raised in a rural orphanage, three (now grown) friends, Anton (Tanta Ginting), Hanif (Ario Bayu), and Jefri (Miller Khan) return when they hear that the health of the proprietor is failing. Along with each other, Mr. Bandi (Yayu A.W. Unru) is the closest thing to family that they had as children. They each bring along their families as a way to bridge the gap between childhood and adulthood, and to say goodbye to the man who raised them.

Following the critical and commercial success of the first May the Devil Take You, director Timo Tjahjanto brings several costars back this go-round for a second thrilling chapter in the series of Alfie confronting terrifying ghostly beings. Despite a few minor miscalculations from time-to-time, this is a spectacular and rewarding sequel now available to stream on Shudder.

Earlier this month, the 2020 Nightstream Film Festival offered up genre fans a ton of amazing online offerings to enjoy throughout its four-day festivities. Here’s a look at two of the films I had the opportunity to watch during Nightstream: May the Devil Take You Too from Timo Tjahjanto (which hits Shudder soon) and Jesse Blanchard’s puppet splatterfest, Frank & Zed.
May the Devil Take You Too: Two years ago, Timo Tjahjanto unleashed May the Devil Take You, his demonic thrill ride pitting a young woman named Alfie (Chelsea Islan) and her step-family against sinister forces that want nothing more than to claim their souls. Now, Tjahjanto is back with his follow-up effort, May the Devil Take You Too, which feels slightly more ambitious and polished than its predecessor, and once again evokes a Raimi-esque sense of banana pants filmmaking that delivers up a ton of devilishly fun gore and violence.

Ahead of the Cannes virtual film market kicking off this week, development has officially begun on a bigger, badder, and darker reboot of the popular V/H/S horror series.
V/H/S/94 will be the first film in the franchise to be presented in a single, fluid narrative, while also pushing the experiment to new boundaries through the voices of several prominent genre filmmakers. The film will be produced by Philadelphia locals Josh Goldbloom and Parinda Patel of the newly formed Cinepocalypse Productions in partnership with Studio71, along with Bloody Disgusting‘s Brad Miska, a co-creator of the franchise, and Tom Owen.

Despite horror’s thematic binding to society’s most current fears – this a year of parental devastation and horrors inside family units – my twenty favorite genre titles from 2018 still revel in variety: arachnid puppets, Nazi experiments, zombie musicals alike. Such morbid creativity would stick out like a sore severed thumb any other year, but today? You could drown out aforementioned absurdity with Nicolas Cage’s descent into occult revenge madness alone.
As I said, it’s been a wild year for horror – a damn fine one at that.
My ranking comes after killing many darlings, given my final tally of 118 seen horror films this year. Dig deeper, past these listed twenty, and you’ll still find plenty of gold worth mining. The following treasures just shine a little brighter and demand more attention. Feature debuts, streaming darlings, mainstream nightmares, all the works. The truth is, that despite common belief, horror is not dominant at all as a genre in Asia; in fact the only time it ever was, was during the J-horror explosion. However, a number of very interesting productions in the realm of the extreme do continue to be produced, while this year, “One Cut of the Dead”, a zombie movie, became one of the most impactful productions of the year, for various reasons, with the same applying to “Dukun”, a Malaysian film which was completed in 2007, but managed to be screened only this year, due to its controversial nature.

They say that idle hands are the devil’s playthings, but Indonesian schlockmeister Timo Tjahjanto is never busier than when he’s skirting around the fringes of hell. Just a few long weeks after the release of his gonzo and blood-drenched beat-em-up, “The Night Comes for Us,” Tjahjanto is back with a gonzo and blood-drenched dose of domestic horror, “May the Devil Take You” (viewers familiar with the director’s gobstopping “V/H/S 2” segment won’t be surprised to see that he’s drawn to movies about the inescapable forces of darkness). Both films are available to stream on Netflix, both films offer giddy proof of Tjahjanto’s insatiable appetite for human suffering (both on the screen and in the audience), and both films become interminable reminders that geysers of blood can only get you so far.
