I know some of the people here complained about the pace of the episode but it was satisfying for me because, like the book, it has to build an atmosphere and characters. They are following the book. It is what it supposed to be.

Best episode yet, but...
LegendaryFang5631 July 2021
Upon watching this episode, and finishing it, I'm baffled how there are ten episodes, with six left. A good amount of progress has already been made in these four episodes, as well as in this episode, alone. Just what else could occur that takes up the runtime of six more episodes? I mean, I don't have a problem with that, if that's how it seems. If anything, I'm curious. As far as this episode is concerned, it's the best one, yet.
Follows the book

This episode was great. The whole series follows the book very well- any liberties taken are minor and the overall story and theme remain true. This episode showed more of Holly and we get to know her more. I found the introduction of el cuco to be entrancing, leaving you wanting more right when the credits start rolling! Well done! Truly enjoying this rendition of another great work of Stephen King :)

4th episode is very very intense. It gives up new details about two other possible similar cases and there is introduction of a satan aka grief eater aka El Cuco too. Ignore the ratings here (8.6) as they are probably are avengers fan. After every episode , it just becomes difficult to wait for another week for the next episode.

Scratch And Sniff

Spinning its wheels. That's what I think about this episode of "The Outsider" on reflection. I'm going to need things to speed up a bit if it's going to maintain my interest.
Holly Gibney's (Cynthia Erivo) investigation tracks back further and further, as she discovers contact between Hofstader (Martin Bradford) and another convicted child killer, Maria Caneles (Diany Rodriguez). She denies much contact between herself and Hofstander and continues to protests her innocence but refuses to name who, or what, she believes was behind the murders. Meanwhile, Jack Hoskins (Marc Menchaca) continues to behave erratically.
So, I still feel like this is well performed, nicely shot stuff, I like the characters and I enjoy a slow burn mystery but it's becoming increasingly frustrating to watch the show with us, as the audience, so far ahead of the investigation team. "It's some sort of supernatural entity that can look like people", (Yes, we've guessed that from the start). "Its power is transmitted by scratching the other person" (Yes, we've known that from the 2nd episode). I'm ready for something else to happen now. I need something unexpected to happen, maybe something with Paddy Considine and his character will be the inspiration I'm looking for. (Congratulations to the set dressers, by the way, for creating a more depressing strip club than the one in Ozark).
I'm not ready to give up yet, but the source novel's Wikipedia summary is starting to look more appealing.

Pace is realy slow ...

I enjoyed the first and the second episodes, the third was a big disappointment, static and absolutely irrelevant with anything. In the fourth we see some "movement" and thus we can conclude "it's still alive", but it really goes nowhere. These Series had the potential to be great.
A Huge Dip
teachinglegend30 January 2020
The first 2 episodes were an easy 9/10, perhaps a 10/10 each. The third episode was a clear 8/10 to 9/10. This episode, with it's method acting and semi-coherent story telling, jumped aroun meanderingdall over the place. This episode took quite a dip.

Complete filler, does NOT follow book

Warning: Spoilers
I read the book, my boyfriend didn't. We both hated this episode, and he could tell it had deviated from the book because it felt so different. It does NOT follow the book- the third, female murderer was completely made up and unnecessary for them to piece together what was going on, so was Merlin coming back and doing the sketch. Also, in the book Holly already knew about El Cuco because she watched Luchadora movies as a kid which, is way more fun and interesting than just being told about it by some old lady. The show runner went completely off book for this episode and you can tell. It was also very slow and felt like they were trying to fill time in what was already a completely unnecessary episode. I read the changes were made because they wanted to make Holly more of the focus than Ralph, but she already has a large and crucial role in the story. This whole episode should have been cut and left the series to be 9 episodes.
Snooze-fest

I honestly had to fast-forward some bits that were getting very dull. I'm quite shocked at the shows praise compared to Under The Dome (2013) or even The Mist Tv Show (2017).
This show really needs to step up because if this keeps up, I'm just going to read the book and forget about this HBO show.

Serious direction failures

This director tries too hard to stamp and restamp his little trademarks onto the episodes he directs. Apparently, the only trademark he's capable of is the out of focus depth of field photography. I can imagine the cameraman blowing air out of his mouth with each instruction for an out of focus shot that trails into focus. That kind of shot is unhelpful to the production unless it's used to build suspense, which is clearly not the case here.
Looking into Bernstein's work history, there are several series in which he is credited for a single episode. Does that indicate that he's hard to work with, or a sign of dissatisfaction with his quirks? At any rate he fumbles this episode. The script for this one diverges far afield from the novel's story, which is usually a sign of a showrunner telling the writers to "do something different". Often the showrunner is a writer, which may be the case here, but sometimes the showruner is a director or a producer.
Whoever came up with this episode, it was a failure both in writing and in direction.
