The key to editing and scoring “Catch and Kill: The Podcast Tapes,” based on Ronan Farrow’s 2019 book of the same name, was honoring the story at heart and honing in on the key moment that drove each half-hour episode.
The six-episode HBO series collects unseen footage, archive interviews and insight into Farrow’s reporting process as he details the efforts behind the systematic abuse by Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, which helped kick-start the #MeToo movement.
Like the podcast and book, “Catch and Kill,” named for a practice often used by tabloid media, chronicles how Farrow landed the story and the difficulty he had getting it to air on television as he wrestled with NBC News. Interviews with the whistleblowers, Weinstein survivors Rose McGowan and with Ambra Gutierrez, the Italian model who wore a wire to assist police in nabbing him, are also features.

Ronan Farrow’s reporting on Harvey Weinstein — first his coverage in The New Yorker in 2017, then his metacoverage of what it took to get that story in his 2019 book “Catch and Kill” — helped to crystallize and define a moment in American cultural life. With the new documentary series “Catch and Kill: The Podcast Tapes,” Farrow amplifies that work, continuing to tell both the story of Weinstein’s predations and of his attempts to quash serious journalistic inquiry.
This will be familiar to many potential viewers. As the show’s title suggests, this series — directed by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato — is a spinoff of Farrow’s podcast, itself a spinoff of the “Catch and Kill” book. Anyone familiar with either will be revisiting a story they’ve encountered before. And yet as a primer for a new audience, this is a worthwhile bit of programming from HBO, keeping both Weinstein...

Exclusive: (Updated with statement from filmmakers) After decades of legal wars between Woody Allen and Mia Farrow and various jurisdictions over sexual child assault claims against the Oscar-winning director, HBO’s Allen v. Farrow docuseries may have opened a whole new battlefield.
Skyhorse Publishing is seriously contemplating a copyright infringement lawsuit against the premium cabler and the filmmakers behind the four-part docuseries for unauthorized use of audio from Allen’s 2020 memoir Apropos of Nothing.
“Neither the producers nor HBO ever approached Skyhorse to request permission to use excerpts from the audiobook,” the publishing company told Deadline on Monday.
“Skyhorse received information second hand only at the very end of last week that each of the documentary’s four episodes makes extensive use of audiobook excerpts,” Skyhorse added.
“Promptly on Friday, February 19, our attorney notified HBO’s in-house counsel by letter that if the use of the audiobook were anywhere near what we were hearing,...

Every year we get a couple of surprise wins at the Grammys. In 2015 many was shocked when Beyoncé’s self-titled album lost Album of the Year to Beck’s “Morning Phase,” while many were just as shocked a few years earlier in 2011 when indie rockers Arcade Fire‘s “The Suburbs” pulled a surprise win against commercial heavyweights like Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” and Eminem’s “Recovery.” With the 2021 Grammy Awards already being a little controversial with unexpected noms and snubs across the board, who do we think could surprise us come January 31?

While Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and others dominated the Grammy Awards nominations announced today, a number of names more associated with the film and TV worlds also made the cut. Among those vying for statuettes on Music’s Biggest Night next year are Jerry Seinfeld, Tiffany Haddish, Meryl Streep, Rachel Maddow, Jeopardy! Goat Ken Jennings and Spike Jonze.
Five folks who are familiar to TV audiences are up for Best Comedy Album this year: Seinfeld (23 Hours to Kill), Haddish (Black Mitzvah), Patton Oswalt (I Love Everything), Jim Gaffigan (The Pale Tourist) and Bill Burr (Paper Tiger). Oswalt is the only one of the bunch with a Grammy to his credits — among six noms. Gaffigan landed his sixth career nomination, and Seinfeld has his fourth. This is Haddish’s second nom, following a spoken-word mention in 2018, and Burr lands his first.

This “Jeopardy!” champion just earned his first Grammy nomination for Best Spoken Word Album. Who is…Ken Jennings.
Yes, Jennings was nominated for a Grammy Tuesday morning thanks to his work narrating Alex Trebek’s memoir, “Alex Trebek: The Answer Is…Reflections on My Life.” This is just the latest form of recognition for Jennings after on Monday he was named one of a rotating group of interim “Jeopardy!” hosts to fill in for the late Trebek.
Upon learning he was nominated though, Jennings was surprised at the recognition and wondered why Trebek himself hadn’t been nominated instead.
“Wait, what?” Jennings said in a tweet. “This should 100% be Alex’s Grammy nomination. He wrote the book and reads much of the audiobook! Who do I speak to about this?”
But Jennings will have some stiff competition. He goes up against Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea for his memoir “Acid For the Children,...

The Peabody Awards, which had to postpone its scheduled June 18 winners ceremony in what was to be its first time held in Los Angeles, said Thursday it is now canceling the event. Winners instead will be announced next week and be accepted via video.
The plan calls for the Peabodys to reveal the recipient of its Career Achievement Award on June 8, with winners to be announced June 10.
Organizers in March were forced to postpone the planned in-person gala at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel — its first ceremony in L.A. in the Peabodys’ 80-year history — because of the coronavirus crisis. In May, nominations were unveiled for the year’s most compelling and empowering stories released in broadcasting and digital media. PBS topped the nominees list with 11 including several the documentaries category via its Pov series.

Matt Lauer has penned a lengthy op-ed, venting his thoughts about Ronan Farrow’s reporting and, once again, denying that he raped Brooke Nevils, the former NBC employee who said she was raped by Lauer in Farrow’s best-selling book, “Catch and Kill.”
Writing a piece for Mediaite, in which Lauer goes into meticulous detail, fact-checking Farrow’s book himself, the former “Today” show host says Farrow was “hardly an unbiased journalist” whenever he reported on NBC, calling his stories “salacious” and accusing him of using his reporting to promote his book, which went on to become a New York Times best-seller.
“What I found when I read the book was frankly shocking, and it should concern anyone who cares about journalism. This is not just about accusations against the former host of the ‘Today’ show,” Lauer writes. “It’s about whether changing social attitudes can be allowed to change...

Former Today co-host Matt Lauer published a lengthy op-ed in Mediaite on Tuesday that blasts Ronan Farrow’s reporting for his book Catch and Kill, in which he writes about a former Today producer’s claim that Lauer raped her.
In his op-ed, Lauer cites specific instances in Catch and Kill where he contends that Farrow failed to talk to people who offered contradictory information to Brooke Nevils’ claims.
His op-ed also comes in the wake of a column by the New York Times‘ Ben Smith that criticized aspects of Farrow’s reporting.
Lauer wrote: “I believe Ronan knew his work on Catch and Kill would receive little in the way of scrutiny, from the very beginning. There is clearly no love lost between Matt Lauer and Ronan Farrow. The disgraced Today Show host makes it clear that he disagrees with Farrow's reporting in the best-selling book Catch and Kill. Specifically, Lauer writes in an op-ed for Mediaite that he's "disappointed but not surprised" in the perceived lack of scrutiny of Farrow's book. In the media industry, where most employees toil in relative obscurity for low wages, Ronan Farrow is something of an anomaly: an investigative journalist who also happens to be a household name. New York Attorney General Investigated NBC News, Per Reports; Network Says It’s Not Aware Of Inquiry
An NBCUniversal spokesperson said the company is not aware of any inquiry by the New York’s attorney general into allegations of sexual harassment, retaliation and gender discrimination.
The Daily Mail and Variety reported on an investigation on Tuesday, one day after it was announced that Andrew Lack, chairman of NBC News and MSNBC, would be departing the network at the end of the month.
Former NBC News anchor Linda Vester told the Daily Mail that she was one of the women who was interviewed as part of the investigation, and she said they wanted to know about any involvement that Lack had in claims of retaliation. In 2018, Vester accused NBC News stalwart Tom Brokaw of making unwanted sexual advances, something that he denied.
Variety spoke to three women, including Vester, who say they were questioned by the office, and it reported that a number of others also were interviewed.

Noah Oppenheim was primed to gain oversight of all the operations of NBC News and MSNBC. Instead he has a new boss with those very responsibilities – and more.
Oppenheim was named president of NBC News in February of 2017 and had been cited publicly by former NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke as his choice to succeed Andy Lack, the chairman of MSNBC and NBC News. He rose quickly through the ranks thanks to his touch with the company’s venerable “Today” morning franchise, which has become newsier and more direct under his watch. His “Today” captures the bulk of viewers between 25 and 54, the audience most coveted by advertisers, beating rival “Good Morning America” at ABC. And that in turn helped the program’s first two hours snare $332 million in advertising in 2018, according to ad-tracker Standard Media Index.

As NBC veterans digest a reorganization announced Monday by NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell, what was not entirely surprising was the departure of Andrew Lack. He had for some time been seen as exiting, perhaps at the end of the year.
What was a bit surprising was choice of Cesar Conde to lead a newly formed NBCUniversal News Group, which will include not just NBC News and MSNBC, which Lack had overseen, but also CNBC, which is led by Mark Hoffman.
Conde, who has been chairman of Telemundo and the company’s international division, is a break from the past, a choice of someone who rose the ranks at NBCUniversal outside of its news divisions. Although his latest film remains hidden from public view, Woody Allen’s memoir finally was published today and, while its first printing quickly sold out, the book exhibits the same absence of order and discipline that has haunted both his films and his personal life. Indeed, it has re-ignited a predictable torrent of criticism about the scandals without adding new information or insight.
Titled Apropos of Nothing, the memoir is actually three books: One is a hilarious account of his Brooklyn upbringing; the second is a superbly revealing analysis of triumphs and flaws in his filmmaking; and the third is a baffling and unhinged report of his personal encounters, which reads like a bad parody of a Dostoevsky novel, with subtitles by Freud. Readers might be surprised by Allen’s candor but, as he explains, “when you view something as an innocent person you relish the close looks because you have nothing to hide.

Woody Allen Says He'd 'Welcome' Daughter Dylan Farrow 'with Open Arms’ After Molestation Accusations
Woody Allen has a message for his estranged daughter Dylan Farrow even as she denounced his controversial new memoir.
The director’s book, Apropos of Nothing, was published on Monday after being dropped by its original publisher due to backlash. In it, Allen recounts the custody battle with Mia Farrow and rifts in his family following the allegations.
Dylan accused Allen, 84, of molesting her when she was a child — an allegation he has repeatedly denied. In an emotional open letter Dylan sent to The New York Times in 2014 detailing her molestation claim, she wrote, “For as long as I could remember,...

In his just-published memoir “Apropos of Nothing,” Woody Allen once again denied accusations that he molested daughter Dylan Farrow in the early ’90s when she was 7 and said the accusations were part of his ex-partner Mia Farrow’s “Ahab-like quest” for revenge after he left her for Farrow’s daughter Soon-Yi Previn.
“I never laid a finger on Dylan, never did anything to her that could be even misconstrued as abusing her; it was a total fabrication from start to finish,” he writes in the new book, which was released Monday by Arcade Publishing after his previous publisher, Hachette, dropped it.
According to the Associated Press, which broke the news of the sudden publication, Allen recalled going to Mia Farrow’s cottage in 1992 and placing a hand in Dylan’s lap, but says, “I certainly didn’t do anything improper to her. I was in a room full of people watching TV mid-afternoon.

Monday, Mia Farrow tweeted a video of her son Ronan as a teenager singing “Not While I’m Around” from the musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
The actress tweeted the clip in honor of Stephen Sondheim, the musical theater icon who turned 90 on Sunday. “Ronan will kill me for this, but here he is as a teenager singing a little ‘Not While I’m Around,’ the song I used to sing to him when he was little.”

Remember when, in a pre-Coronavirus world, it was a hot button issue as Hachette signed up to publish the Woody Allen memoir Apropos Of Nothing, and then rescinded that plan after staffers staged a walkout and Ronan Farrow swore off the publisher of his bestseller Catch and Kill, prompting Stephen King to declare his uneasiness over what could seem like a form of censorship?
Well, the 84-year old filmmaker got a publisher for his book, as Arcade Publishing released the memoir today, the Associated Press reported. Though we were unable to find it on Amazon, or even Arcade’s own website, AP was apparently given a copy of the book to summarize with affirmation from a publicist declaring it was unclear if there would be any interviews coming from the Oscar-winning filmmaker who’s been dogged by molestation charges by his daughter Dylan, which he has steadfastly denied.
