The trailer made this look like a low-budget, yet fun romantic comedy about an interracial relationship. Upon viewing, I couldn't tell if it was a parody, satire, or nothing more than an excuse for the director/writer to use the "n" word repeatedly!
1. Music- horrible and distracting. Seriously, someone thought it would be a good idea to play campy circus organ music as the couple discusses a possible unplanned pregnancy.
2. Acting- the only "good" acting came from the actor playing Toby. Sad to say, it was only good because he did a great job playing the racist friend. I'm finding it even sadder to say- the only redeemable acting in this movie is a guy shouting the "n" word or getting a "white pride" tattoo.
3. Plot- the plot of a white guy falling for a black girl could easily have been a beautiful (or fun) story. No, this one is so full of stereotypes (the brother of the black girl is described as having a "gorilla nose" and he runs around beating up white guys simply because they are white and looking at his sister) a so-called "rap song" where it is nothing more than the "n" word over a beat, and the white guy's dad going on and on about how his son is going to destroy their "pure blood" left me wondering why anyone who read the script bothered to show up to make the film??
4. Errata- the movie has titles which gives us a "made" up Latin name for each character. The names make no sense, and it feels like the director wanted to add in some old time Looney Tunes "flair" into the flick. Dialogue is lacking, the situations are forced, and there is nothing worth watching in this flick. The white guy deals in marijuana, but that's never addressed by his girlfriend or their relationship. The black girl is presented as oversexed, and always ready to jump into bed. It's the same old boring stereotypes with nothing new to add. I'm floored this is a movie released in 2018. The sheer levels of stupidity and stereotypes made it feel like a movie from 1985.
If you want to view some good movies with a romance between a black woman and a white man, may I suggest the following:
My Last Day Without You Something New Belle A Bronx Tale Mr. and Mrs. Loving Ruby's Bucket of Blood The Courage to Love The Last Place on Earth Besieged Love Song Liberty Heights ZebraHead The Secret Laughter of Women The Josephine Baker Story The Omega Man Georiga Georgia Foreign Student Corina, Corina Bulworth Mission Impossible 2 Monster's Ball Guess Who Lakeview Terrace Born to be Blue Loving Everything, Everything The Greatest Showman Where Hands Touch
If I met the director and/or the writer of White Chocolate, they would get a hearty throat punch from me for putting out this waste of a movie.
