While the other streaming services set up recurring franchises, Hulu has opted to get a bit more experimental with its original offerings in August 2021.
Hulu’s list of new releases this month is highlighted by three original series concepts with promise. Reservation Dogs premieres on August 9. Co-created by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), this story will follow four indigenous teenagers in Oklahoma as they stave off boredom and adulthood. Next up is Nine Perfect Strangers on August 18. This miniseries, based on a book of the same name, is produced by David E. Kelley and features staggering cast of Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, Luke Evans, Samara Weaving, and more.
Only Murders in the Building is likely the biggest thing to look forward to in August though. Premiering on August 31, this comedy stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as three true crime-obsessed friends who stumble into a true crime of their own.

Humans with enhanced powers are being hunted down and captured by an Above Top Secret government agency. As one of them fights for her freedom she realizes one of her own kind may be an even bigger threat. The New Mutants or another new X-Men film?
No, it’s Enhanced, the new film from director James Mark. He’s teamed up with co-writers Matthew Nayman (Betrayal) and Peter Van Horne for a semi-sequel to Mark’s 2017 film Kill Order. Neither the film’s poster or any press materials refer to Enhanced as a sequel to or even in the same world as Kill Order. But the connections are obvious. The mutant’s powers,...

For moviegoers accustomed to stoner-dude protagonists, “The Marijuana Conspiracy” offers a nice change. The Canadian drama, set in 1972, is full of Mary Janes. Okay, really just one Mary and one Jane. But they’re joined by other young women who answer a call to participate in a research project. For 98 days, Mary, Janice, Jane, Mourinda and Marissa will be able — more like required — to smoke dope. And they get to imbibe without fear of the fuzz.
Writer-director Craig Pryce adapted the true story of research the Addiction Research Foundation undertook when Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau began considering the decriminalization of recreational cannabis. (Hint: They were not for it.) It was dubbed “Project Marijuana,” but Pryce has renamed it the friskier sounding “Project Venus.”
“The Marijuana Project,” available on demand 4/20 (wink wink), is a mildly buzzy hybrid that swings from serious to light and back again. If the category is dope movies,...

It’s quaint under our current circumstances to think that in the 1970s, the growing acceptance and use of cannabis were considered by conservative politicians as a “pandemic.” That’s at least the word used by John Bradow (Derek McGrath), a stand-in for former Ontario premier John Robarts, as he tries to slow down Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau’s efforts to decriminalize weed decades before it was cool. The result, as detailed in the based on a true story drama “The Marijuana Conspiracy,” saw Bradow throw money at a study he was certain would confirm his belief about the deleterious effects of weed.

"These women know what they signed up for..." Samuel Goldwyn Films has released an official trailer for an indie feature titled The Marijuana Conspiracy, based on a remarkably true story. This entertaining & informative film took place in 1972. It's about an outlandish study on the effects of marijuana on young women. This film centers around five young women who shared a common goal: to make some money and have a fresh start in life. They must endure isolated captivity in a true 98-day human experiment, but as the tagline states, "they had no one to protect them but each other." Oddly, the final results have never been released. The film stars Julia Sarah Stone, Morgan Kohan, Brittany Bristow, Tymika Tafari, and Kyla Young. It's being released on VOD on 4/20 (of course!) this spring. Inspired by Doreen Brown, one of the real life women whom the film is based upon. Years after the experiment ended,...
