The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced the first winners of its new talent-cultivation program in China, including a young director, an up-and-coming actress, and a line producer on a $127-million-grossing romcom.
Five Chinese artists were named Tuesday as the inaugural honorees of BAFTA’s Breakthrough China program. Among them is young director Bai Xue, whose first feature, “The Crossing,” grossed $1.4 million (RMB9.9 million) in March, and her producer He Bin, who is also an audio engineer. Line producer Ye Ting, who worked on last year’s box-office hit romantic comedy “How Long Will I Love U,” actress and director Bonnie Chen, and games producer Guan Dan, who worked on the full-length live-action interactive work “The Invisible Guardian,” were also selected for the program.
Over the next year, BAFTA will support the five honorees to “build, develop and continue their careers” via meetings, events and introductions in the U.

Romance, fairy tale, sci fi, drama, comedy, time travel are terms that very rarely come together to describe a single movie, but Su Lun had managed to do just that, in a rather unusual films that manages to combine all the aforementioned with some splashes of nonsensicality that result in a rather entertaining flick, at least for the most part. Let us take things from the beginning though.
“How Long Will I Love U?” is screening at San Diego Asian Film Festival (Sdaff)
Gu Xiaojiao is a young woman as superficial and calculating as possible. She is in search of a husband, whose main trait, though, has to be money, and particularly enough to buy her a mansion she wants. Lu Ming is a hard-working architect, who sees his blueprints and overall plans being rejected repeatedly. These very different people, who happen to leave in 2018 and 1999 respectively, find themselves living...

Dying To Survive, a Chinese black comedy with social drama overtones that we’ve been talking about for the past few weeks as a potential breakout during the July blackout on Hollywood movies, is showing serious signs of life in the Middle Kingdom. What’s more, it’s not the sort of film we’ve seen before during this period, and has spurred debate on serious issues.
Four days of previews began last weekend with the official July 6 release date backed up to July 5 as buzz swelled. With today’s locally-reported one-day estimate of about $57M, Dying To Survive has grossed an estimated $141M through Saturday (it’s also on about 500 IMAX screens). The film, directed by feature first-timer Muye Wen, has a 9 score on Douban and 9.7 on Maoyan. The Douban number has only been attained by such movies as Coco, Zootopia and Ready Player One in recent years.

Disney/Pixar’s Incredibles 2 launched strongly in second with $19.3m from its three-day opening weekend, making it the best Pixar’s debut in China.

Contemporary Chinese Cinema is a column devoted to exploring contemporary Chinese-language cinema primarily as it is revealed to us at North American multiplexes.Dead PigsWith the exception of the fine time-travel romantic comedy How Long Will I Love U, which has been doing very well at the box office in China and can still be found in select cities over here, there haven’t been many Chinese films of note recently on North American screens. There will be more to look forward to this summer, starting with Tsui Hark’s Detective Dee and the Four Heavenly Kings, which is set for a late July release. And recently New York audiences have been blessed by retrospectives on Sylvia Chang and Chang Cheh. For the rest of us, however, pickings have been slim. While current distribution patterns see a decent number of Chinese films make it to select mainstream multiplexes, those films...

Indian dramedy Toilet: A Love Story came out on top during one of the slowest weekends of the year so far at the Chinese box office.
The imported Bollywood hit earned $9.1 million from Friday to Sunday, narrowly beating holdover romantic comedy How Long Will I Love U with $8.5 million.
The first-place finish represents a continuation of Indian cinema's hot streak in the huge Chinese film market. Since the breakout smash success of Indian blockbuster Dangal ($190 million) last year, imported Bollywood fare has consistently connected with the Chinese mainstream (more on the trend here).

India’s “Toilet Ek Prem Katha” landed on top of the Chinese box office, on what was the second lowest grossing weekend of the year. “Toilet” earned $9.09 million, ahead of holdover Chinese fantasy romance “How Long Will I Love U” in second place.
Despite the low score, the win is a further triumph for diversity and a sign of audience development in Chinese theatres.
The odds should have been against the film, pitched as “Toilet Hero.” The story of one man’s attempt to bring sanitation to his village, the film’s central concept portrays a low development era that China left behind many years ago. And its male lead Akshay Kumar, although well loved in India, is little known in China.
Nevertheless, what Indian analysts call content-driven films (a distinction that marks them apart from packages dominated by star casting), have found real connections and growing interest in China in the past two years.

Exclusive: Paramount Pictures/Platinum Dunes’ A Quiet Place passed the Chinese censors back in April, becoming one of the rare horror films to gain entry to the Middle Kingdom. Now, it’s the latest movie to get an extension in the market. After 20 days on local release, the John Krasinski-helmed thriller has grossed $32.8M. Its global cume is $322M, of which $137.7M comes from the international box office. The film still has France and Japan on deck.

Japanese cartoon, “Doraemon The Movie 2018: Nobita’s Treasure Island” opened on top of the Chinese box office over the weekend. It was helped by the Children’s Day holiday on Friday.

By Sunday, “Doraemon” had been edged into second place and overtaken by holdover “How Long Will I Love U.” The Chinese fantasy romance earned $15.9 million over three days for a cumulative of $110 million in 17 days.

Update, Writetrhu: Disney/Lucasfilm’s Solo: A Star Wars Story continued its very bumpy ride this weekend with a sophomore session that was worth $30.3M at the international box office. That’s a 47% drop from last weekend’s launch of the Han Solo origins story when comparing the Friday-Sunday portions. While the hold is better than average, it was also aided by a lack of new competition as other titles had stayed away, expecting a much bigger bow versus the stalled start last frame.
However, the Millennium Falcon’s engine malfunction left plenty of room for the Merc with the mouth to climb back into the No. 1 spot on the overseas charts. Fox’s Deadpool 2 grossed $41.6M this session, including a strong opening in Japan. After three frames, the offshore cume is $344M for $598.6M global. Internationally, it’s running 3% behind its predecessor.
The overseas cume on Solo is now $115.3M for $264.2M worldwide.

In a mixed weekend for specialty openers. the leading newcomer by far is American Animals. Backed by The Orchard and MoviePass Ventures, the film grossed $140,633, averaging $35,158, one of the best debuts of 2018.
The Sundance debut was directed by Bart Layton and stars Evan Peters, Barry Keoghan, Blake Jenner and Jared Abrahamson. The strong launch offered MoviePass some positive news during an otherwise trying stretch for its parent company, Helios & Matheson as investors and industryites continue to question the viability of the MoviePass subscription model.
Other debuts were more sobering. IFC Films opened A Kid Like Jake, grossing $9,063 in an exclusive showing in New York. FilmRise bowed Australian-set Breath, also with one run, taking in $5,700. Cohen Media Group rolled out Jacques Doillon’s French-language feature, Rodin, in two theaters, grossing $6,551.

Sundance debut “American Animals” (The Orchard), the twisty docudrama hybrid recreation of a high-stakes Kentucky college heist, got a boost on its way to dominating the specialty box office this weekend. It’s one of the best platform releases in recent weeks. And it was a surprise.
The Orchard partnered with MoviePass when it acquired “American Animals” for a reported $3 million. Clearly, that extra MoviePass marketing push made a significant difference.
Meanwhile two current successes, “Rbg” (Magnolia) and “First Reformed” (A24), continue to impress at different stages of expansion, with the former heading toward becoming Magnolia’s biggest grosser.

“Solo: A Star Wars Story” opened in third place in China behind holdovers “How Long Will I Love U,” and “Avengers: Infinity War.” The misfire meant one of the quietest weekends of the year for the Chinese box office.
“Solo: A Star Wars Story” managed just $9.62 million, according to local data service Ent Group. Disney’s estimates point to $10.1 million.
The film had been given some 77,000 screenings on its opening Friday, more than any other title in the marketplace. But after that weak opening, exhibitors transferred screens to “How Long” on Saturday and again on Sunday. “Solo” played just under 60,000 sessions on Sunday.
Chinese time swap romance, “How Long” had been the previous weekend’s surprise package, when it opened in second place. In its second weekend, it climbed to top spot, and scored $24.1 million. That was down only 33% from its first weekend score. After 10 days on release it now has $81.4 million.

We’re not even halfway through 2018, and already we’ve seen three films enter the domestic top thirty for all-time opening weekends. Unsurprisingly, the prosperous motion picture trio all inhabit the superhero genre: Deadpool 2 ($125M), Black Panther ($202M) and Avengers: Infinity War ($257M).
Incredibly, however, one of 2018’s biggest blockbusters, Solo: A Star Wars Story, has the most disappointing debut of the year all sewn up. We learned today that the Ron Howard-directed space western made just $83.3 million in its opening weekend, which is a total worse than Justice League ($93.8M), another highly anticipated release that severely underwhelmed at the box office.
While we won’t receive the full four-day estimate until tomorrow, it’s safe to say that Solo: A Star Wars Story will not be gunning for the Memorial Day weekend box office record anymore – as predicted – which is currently held by Pirates of the Caribbean:...
