There are a lot of films, documentaries, books etc out there about the rise of Trump - and for one reason or another there will be plenty more for many years to come. In some ways there is currency to be made in striking while the iron is hot, even though my belief is that the best material will be written once all is washed out and complete, however it is to be complete. This short film focuses on the rise of fake news which had a lot of traffic driven from a small town in Macedonia. It does this with home movie footage and actors to make it feel like we are on the inside of this as it occurs. It is an interesting angle and certainly offers more than the usual 'trolls' fingerpointing - however it doesn't ever deliver on its premise.
The human approach takes away from this as an interesting piece of information being explored, but at the same time the approach doesn't add as much as it needed to. I didn't feel like I gained much appreciation for the people, their motives, or the feeling of when it all came home to roost. Without this, the film doesn't offer much, and the grainy, amateur feel doesn't make it feel personal or close - just messy. It is a nice try and idea, but the delivery doesn't bring it home to be a film worth seeking out.
