Ignore the parts with the Quebequers
musgraves7 February 2019
As a half-Brit, half-Newfoundlander raised in Montreal, seeing the two Quebecois chefs dragging their luxuries and imported foods around the landscape was the least enjoyable part of the episode. It was also not in the spirit of NFLD or even Bourdain himself. Savour the authentic Newfie spirit in the rest of show and ignore the scene stealers.

The only subpar episode

This could've been a great episode and starts well delving into Newfoundland's difficulties with the cod fishing industry. Enter the over-the-top, pretentious characters from elsewhere. The moose hunting idiocy nearly drove me to turn off the episode. Sitting on a beach eating the foods and drinking the drinks they indulged in! Was this representative of life in Newfoundland? Maybe a version that I cannot stand to watch. I'm sunrises Anthony could eben stomach this phony display. This is a very disappointing episode in what is otherwise my favorite series. It would not be am exaggeration to say the series has shape my adult life. But this one is a stinker. Anthony was let down by his producers on this episode. Yuck.

Jason Mamoa witnessed more of what NL offers.

As a long time fan of Bourdain's work, and an Islander, I'm torn. The episode did a great job highlighting Raymond's and St. Pierre, but what does foie gras provided by two Quebecois chefs and using a throwing axe to portion unpasteurized cheese have to do with Newfoundland and Labrador?

Should CNN ever greenlight Anthony's heir apparent, I pray they leave their friend's home and just go with the local vibe.

Also, wine from "wine" that was made in Nova Scotia? I look forward to going to David's restaurant in Montreal for local pork raised in Ontario.

Decent not-Montreal episode?

I live in Montreal, and after watching this episode I no longer have any desire to visit Joe Beef. This episode made it clear that its owners are pretentious, self-important, single-minded douches who obviously spend their free time thinking up new ways to make money rather than a good dish that honors the ingredients. Bourdain should have left them at home rather than spoil a perfectly good episode with their over-the-top show-stealing and self-absorption. Montreal is chock full of this type, which is why their restaurant has found so much success.

The restaurant with the seafood tower looked amazing and I wish they'd spent more time on stuff like that. The fishing scenes were nice. Some more could have also been said about the history of Newfoundland, but I guess we got what CNN wanted us to get.

The part with St-Pierre/Miquelon could have been left out instead of blurred together with Newfoundland.

The axe throwing was dumb. Loved how Small Joe Beef Guy says he used to have a throwing axe board at his restaurant but proceeds to utterly fail at the game thereby exposing his fraud. These guys are such hypocritical pigs! An insult to the Canadian food scene.

The bartender at the end seemed fun, but that's the kind of touristy experience that used to make Bourdain cringe (see: infamous Dracula scene from Romania).

All in all, worth a watch for a window into what actual Canadian food is like (hint: it isn't canned jellied foie sprinkled with black truffle) and for the exercise of one's critical thinking skills.
