Wandering ever further astray from the original H.G. Wells source material, the population of London, all 200 of them, heads on foot toward the English Channel in a surprisingly calm and collected fashion. Amy and Frederick join the crowd. From somewhere in the countryside, George also decides to make his way to the English Channel, miraculously arriving at the next sand dune over from where Amy and Frederick have arrived at just about the same time. Frederick orders Amy into an escaping lifeboat while he remains behind; it's women and children first. From her lifeboat, Amy sees George and Frederick reunited on the strand, and she accordingly jumps out of her lifeboat. George, meanwhile, has seen Amy jump overboard and he accordingly swims out to meet her. Remaining on the beach, Frederick is swept up in the crowd which a Martian tripod is annihilating, but the tripod is struck by artillery and collapses before it can evaporate Frederick. The trio grabs someone's young daughter and they all head inland on foot back to Woking, but only get as far as Weybridge, taking shelter in an abandoned house. Ogilvy shows up now and then to explain things.
