It truly warmed my heart to see these two perform together
FilmsFillMyHoles29 May 2018
Such a lovable and joyous set. There is an abundance of hilarious skits and jokes (admittedly Martin Short kinda steals the show), but unfortunately there are plenty of jokes that miss the mark as well. All in all it's not the funniest comedy set I've seen, but it's probably the most wholesome (it sorta reminded me of Jerry Before Seinfeld in this regard). It's not for everybody, but if you think the title is funny, then I'd say you'll probably enjoy the show.

Fantastic show. Two great comedians who met on the set of one of the all time classic comedies - The Three Amigos. It's great how they bounce off each other. Definitely one to watch

Enjoyable. You'd have fun watching it with your grandpa

Warning: Spoilers
This special was interesting and insightful.. it was fun hearing the stories these two had to share about their lives as stars and Steve Martins' banjo performance was killer.. I seriously loved the original piece that was composed. Martin short also had a pair of Sinatra Esq pipes on him I didn't realize he had. It's not laugh out loud humor ALL the way through, BUT it is really entertaining and I wish my grandpa was still alive because I know he would have absolutely loved watching this special with me.

Polished old-school entertainment
bob the moo2 June 2019
I have watched quite a few Netflix comedy specials featuring comedians doing very difficult material, or doing very crude and modern stuff, so the offer of two Hollywood comedians hitting the screen did appeal to me. This delivered just what I had hoped, which is to say that it was polished, well-rehearsed, but very well-delivered. The setup is simple, which is that that Martin and Short open together, have some time on-stage alone, but mostly are together as a duo. They zing off each other in the way old pros do, and the one-liners are mostly strong.

There are a few comments here about them being elitist and talking themselves up as being famous, but I think those people miss that this is part of the joke. They actually jab at one another really well, each letting themselves be a target for the other. The chemistry is good throughout, and the two men are good individually and together, with timing and delivery from decades in the business. It feels a bit old fashioned compared to the more edgy (but less funny) Netflix comedy specials, but this is part of its charm and a bit part of it working.

Very polished, natural, charming, and funny throughout - well worth a look.

35 years on stage. I am 40 years old. These guys are my whole life. forget the 2000 births learned on the comedy disney channel. this show is gorgeous. It's like it's been around for 35 years.

Great classic comedy!
amoscookiessikele26 May 2018
Ignore the haters! People today don't understand tasteful, articulate, and classic humor. Martin and Short are hilarious, delivering their lines with ease and yet with a dab of spontaneity. Their comedy isn't too off color but has a bit of an edge surrounded with a family vibe. The music was great too! Watch and appreciate these legends.

¡The Two Amigos!
Mr-Fusion30 May 2018
The concept is heartening, if not the execution. My wife went to see this show last year and said it was much funnier in person (also adding that it's been truncated for Netflix consumption). Martin and Short are two reliable names in comedy, and getting to see these two on stage is appealing, let me tell you. Not all of the jokes were gold, and only a couple of them really close the deal.

But as much as Steve Martin owns the stage with his banjo (and a top-shelf backing from the Steep Canyon Rangers), Martin Short's mildly deranged sense of humor provides the memorable gags.

In the end, an enjoyable evening.

Bad Reviewers Are Ridiculous
SteverB28 May 2018
This special was great! It was exactly what I'd hoped for and more. The fact that Martin and Short were at the height of their careers in the 1970s and '80s doesn't mean that they've suddenly become unfunny. My only critique is that it wasn't a bit longer.

Every bad review here is ridiculous. People upset over jokes are people that should skip comedy shows. Others who thought this was somehow self-congratulatory of the team is taking everything literally. What you saw is called satire; look into it. And finally my very favorite reviewer who felt "insulted" because there may have been jokes or lines that weren't politically correct. And then, to take time out of his precious little free time, (wait, I'm weeping!) to write a review because he was just so angry, as if Martin and Short had personally insulted him.

Again, the special is great! And boy, do I miss the IMDb message boards sometimes....

As someone who's never seen either of these people, I had fun
tomwigmore8 June 2018
I'm a comedy fan but somehow both Steve Martin and Martin Short have escaped me. As someone who's never experienced their comedy, I had a truly pleasant experience. They have a great comradery and bounce off each other well. A little over rehearsed at times, but it made me smile and feel a little warm inside. Martin Short's impressions were excellent, and whilst his physical comedy doesn't always sit well with me, his 70s style comedy transcends the ages. Steve Martin almost seems a bystander to Short's comedy at times, but his stories make up for it (as the far better storyteller). Overall, it's a pleasant watch that is nothing like today's comedy. Apparently these two comedians have influenced today's prominent comics, and you can tell. Louis CK gets his story style from Short, Gervais pulls from Martin's intelligent wit and self deprecation. As long as you expect an understated experience to enjoy two people working well together, you will have an entirely pleasant experience. 7/10

Steve and Martin strut their stuff in South Carolina
lee_eisenberg1 June 2018
Steve Martin and Martin Short have been two of the most notable comedians of the past few decades, so it only makes sense that they would perform together. "Steve Martin and Martin Short: An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life" features their concert in Greenville, South Carolina. One fine performance. My favorite parts were the photos from their younger days, Martin playing the banjo, and Short in the costume (whether you use their first names or last names, it still sounds like one of their names).

I liked the movie, and I hope that these guys continue performing for as long as they can.

Loved it! It's Definately comedy for Gen-X
veriity4 June 2018
If you're a millennial, it probably won't make much sense, but for those of us who remember SNL in the original, unedited glory days? All those jokes that make you go "Wow" and "OMG" I remember all those films... Yeah. Thanks guys. Going to re watch all those films.

~When is Steve Martin making another 'Jerk' Movie? LOL

Wanted to like it, but... Not

Warning: Spoilers
These ARE two talented performers, though Steve Martin has always seemed distant from the characters he plays (or over-plays), and thus distant from his audience. Short was definitely on the cutting edge when he was with Second City, but he, too, keeps a wall up between himself and his audience, from authentically connecting with characters and therefore his audience. This separation is reminiscent of Jerry Lewis, Don Rickles and the comedians of that age and style. Where Short can and does go over the top too easily, Martin steps a few feet close to that line, but is never closer to genuine hilarity than arms-length version of saying the lines he's memorized. His performances always feel extremely rehearsed.

This show suffers mightily from a pretense of casual and extemporaneous humor and conversation. Presumably, everyone in the theater and watching the streaming show knows that this is all carefully written and ACTED. So, why bother with the artifice?

Weirdly, Short told a story about the origin of one character, saying he started it on his run with SNL. But, that's not true; he did the nervous sleazy lawyer years earlier on Second City. Why lie about that?

They could have had real conversation, building a show on topics and having real conversation and humourous insughts, etc, but instead, everything is highly scripted and timed to the second.

It's also weird to have a piano player in the stage, who is strained to act funny, too. It was just awkward, unfunny and painful. And, insulting.

Beyond the clunkiness this causes, the 'humor' is weak or, in the case of Short, painfully over-the-top slapstick that just isn't funny anymore. Do people laugh? Of course! But, I'm confident that much of the laughter from theater audience is from 1) the expectation that these guys are funny, and 2) nervous response to being shocked at how lame or insulting the performance is.

There's entirely too much dependence on their past celebrity, along with reliance of context long in the past - to the point of irrelevance. The message really is that they're depending on a sense of shared memories of decades ago, with no real effort to be funny or insightful in context of today. It's like a lounge singer trying to make a living doing Rat Pack-style singing.

If I'd paid to attend live, I'd have left early and asked for a refund. As a Netflix viewer, I hung in for about 20 minutes, waiting and hoping, then realizing it was never going to happen.

Two Live Crew
fsaudio31 May 2018
I wasn't sure what to expect, and quickly realized how baseless was my hesitation. These are two veteran titans of stage entertainment, who showed how it's really done. That is, not to knock other comedians, but these guys effortlessly generated laughs without rrsorting to cussing, pornographic or otherwise highly lewd commentary. It was very refreshing in that sense, and yet still had edge and challenge. IMO they really lived up to their legendary status.

Just what you'd hope for
jellopuke30 September 2018
A fun night of comedy with some great zingers and real chemistry between the two. Nothing really overtly political or topical, just classic era bits and a celebration of two of the best of all time.

At their age they can still make comedy funny
bettycjung28 May 2018
3/27/18. These two elder comedians of yore (yes, they are that old) are still pretty funny in this two-men show. Comedy usually doesn't age well but Martin and Short can still make it work. Catch for a stroll down memory lane.

Whats with the high rating?
arusinghnz28 May 2018
So this was supposed to be funny? Smart? Intelligent? Relevant? Actually none of the above. I gave it 5/10 because I don't like to be harsh, but really this was bad.

An Evening You Will Remember!!

Warning: Spoilers
This was the funniest comedy special I've seen in the last 10 years. It had old school comedy, mixed with modern comedy, mixed with the best of Steve Martin and Martin Short. Their stories were hilarious. Everything was hilarious! Other comedy specials have nothing on this one.

Also, a nice five minute segment of great banjo playing by Steve Martin bringing some calmness and tranquility in between the laughter. A must see!!

We need more of the stories!
pzlgirl12 August 2018
So, yes... some of the jokes were hokey... could have done with a little less of the hating on each other. But I absolutely loved the stories and pictures... it was like sitting with friends over coffee and chatting about the past. I also really enjoyed the banjo playing... now I have to go buy some of his music. Short's music was fun and lighthearted. Would like to see them do another one of these.

Just a Couple of Dull Moments
Hitchcoc8 June 2019
It was great watching these guys. They are two people who can make one laugh without saying a word. They start by trading insults in the kindest way and then get a chance to exhibit their individual talents. I wish short would have done more singing because his parodies of contemporary songs are quite wonderful. There were a couple of down moments but the good stuff totally cancelled these out.

a must watch
shirlone28 November 2021
Steve Martin and Martin Short are very talented and funny men. There's something everybody can relate to this show but it is the baby boomers who grew up with these men. It was so refreshing watching a comedy special that wasn't all about politics. I loved the Three Amigos but my favorite Steve Martin movie has to be Father of the Bride series.

The Worst Kind Of Self-Congratulatory, Gated-Community Hollywood Comedy
MogwaiMovieReviews25 May 2018
I don't think I'm exaggerating excessively when I say that the last time Steve Martin was really, TRULY funny was probably in the movie Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - thirty years ago now - and that I honestly had no idea that Martin Short was still alive.

To be fair, they play with this unfortunate situation in the show, but everything they do and say - right down to the 'seated conversation' part of the act - is so lifeless and scripted and overrehearsed the whole thing felt like an Oscars Ceremony number spun out to over an hour, or corny patter from a Bob Hope and Dean Martin telethon from the sixties. I honestly never even smiled once.

Steve Martin seems like a really nice guy, and I'd love to see him make a comedy as great as The Jerk, The Man With Two Brains or the Three Amigos again. But he doesn't HAVE to, he's certainly done enough, and I like it that he's out there picking his banjo and playing music instead. He's earned his comfy retirement and his hobbies.

But I can't say this is any good when it isn't. And in truth, I really don't know who this is even meant for, except for maybe the guys playing golf at the country club.

There's nothing glaringly, astoundingly WRONG with this special, there's just nothing at all appealing or interesting either. And you really will forget it ever existed just as soon as you stop watching it.

The best standup comedy show I have ever seen.
Bubba3261831 July 2021
The best standup comedy show I have ever seen. Steve Martin and Martin Short are two of the best comedy ever, they are both hilarious. They are amazing apart but they are perfect together. I loved this so much. I loved watching this as much as Steve Martin loves the banjo and as much as Martin Short loves to pose on a piano. Also Lorne Michaels executive produced, which is kind of cool. I was surprised to see his named attached because he mainly produces SNL.
