The sadness of this story based on real events is unbearable at times. Darren Criss gives life to Andrew Cunanan, the killer of Gianni Versace. His performance reminded me that Cunanan was a human being and at the same time there is practically no room for sympathy. Cunanan in Criss's eyes is compelling, terrifying and utterly pitiful. The series uses the murder of Gianni Versace to tell us the sordid tale of his killer. The series is structured in a way that forces you to pay attention. I liked it but I seem to be in the minority there. Loved Penelope Cruz as Donatella Versace. She's great fun to watch and Edgar Ramirez is a dead ringer for the slain designer. Ricky Martin was a bizarre casting choice but Judith Light a stroke of genius. So, terrific, thank you.

Horrific

Honestly this series scared me to the core and that's very rare! The acting is sublime in it and Darren Criss was phenomenal in his role! I can't say I enjoyed it because it was so uncomfortable and eerie to watch! A masterpiece portrayal into the mind of a psychotic killer. I personally never felt any empathy for the character thankfully! I did however feel so so sorry for Andrews ex lover David Madsen! So so sad!...Anyone calling this series bad has not watched the same thing I have!...
Excellent

Watch it in reverse from episode 8 to 1 then episode 9.
crispian200027 April 2018
I started watching the first 3 episodes and was getting increasingly frustrated by this format of jumping back in time every new episode, I'd recorded the whole series and after reading other reviews I thought I'd rather watch the story unfold in the normal time frame. Whoever thought of showing the story the way they did needs a jolly good talking to. My advice is watch the episodes 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 9 in that order forget that that it's called "The Assassination of Gianni Versace", in fact get a sticker and write "The Life, Loves and Deaths of Gianni Versace's Assassin" and stick that on the box, then it'll all make a lot more sense and be a great deal more watchable.
A phenomenal creation, perfect plot and great acting skills from lead actor, masterpiece, I'd say!

This series is a masterpiece, Darren Criss delivers an impeccable acting, he is at his glory playing Andrew Cunan.
All cast make a great team, Penelope Cruz is an authentic Donatella Versace, exceptional portrayed
Reverse play of the events is perfect, could't have done it better! Strong sting skills, good scenery, great mis-en-scene, truly relining psychological aspects. Highly recommend it for the ones passionate about smart and captivating series, about finding your hidden whys and reveling the human nature, even if it is in a monstrous form.
Perfectly done, congrats to all & thank you! PS: also, exceptional 90s music perfectly inserated <3!

Self-improvement and the extinction of others
paul2001sw-15 May 2018
'The Assasination of Gianni Versace' doesn't in fact tell us very much about the murdered designer; everything it does say is flattering, although his family gets a rougher treatment. But really, this is the story of his murderer, serial killer Andrew Cunanan. Serial killers are thankfully rare and arguably over-attended to in the media, but Cunanan turns out to be pretty interesting: someone who convinced themselves that if they could only self-improve enough they would, and be entitled to, be able to be anything they wanted. The style of the series is glossy and somewhat wooden, and a shorter, more naturalistic (and chronological) telling of Cunanan's tale would arguably have been better, though it would have lacked the hook of his almost accidental connection to his last, and most famous, victim. As it is, it's still compelling, although a little heavy-handed in places.
Monster, lover, loner, seeker.....all of the above!

This movie is riveting and the cast is phenomenal. It works from ending to beginning, so don't miss any episodes. The writers and actors manage to show him as a monster, but also at times, human, and deeply affected by the string of lovers that reject him. Much as has been speculated in real life, he is actually quite charismatic and sociable - not the hermits we see in other portrayals of serial killers. But a monster he is, and this movie never lets us forget that (as if we could).

I was looking forward to watching this after its success at the Emmys and Golden Globes, and having very much enjoyed The People vs OJ Simpson. I was immediately drawn in and thought the acting was amazing and the attention to detail with the music and the sets and costume design was great. Yet, for a show that claimed "some events are combined or imagined for dramatic and interpretive purposes," I think they used too much artistic license as I found myself constantly wondering is that really how it happened? What's more, the nonlinear storytelling just didn't quite work for me. This was a 9 part series that could easily have been done in half of that. It dragged on a bit too long.

Can I lock you in there. You sure can. Is what I would say, take my keys. Sir I have children - pow. This Cunanan is vile beyond belief. I truly don't think there is a word that can describe him. So with that said...the actors receive A+++++++ . They were so encompassing and believable. They sure did the job asked of them. I can't wrap my brain around such hate. I just am speechless.
Many questionable choices, including Latinos playing Italians and very little about Versace
dierregi28 June 2019
This should have been titled "The life story of Andrew Cunanan" since only the first two episodes (and bits and pieces here and there) focus on Versace, so if you watch it because you're interested in the glamour of the fashion world, you'll be seriously disappointed.
You get glimpses of Versace's world from the scenes in his villa, from Cruz's wardrobe - as Donatella - and in a few, short scenes about his creative process. Some melodrama is provided by Versace's live-in lover, Antonio, who - like all the other Italian characters - is played by a Latino. Weird and questionable choice and not the only one ....
Most of the other episodes and the majority of screen time are dedicated to Cunanan, his life story playing in reverse, from his weird childhood, to his school days and the development of his egocentric, psychotic personality. From male escort and "best friend" of older guys, to his alleged "love story" with David, one of the victims of his killing spree.
A whole episode is dedicated to Jeff, the first victim, a former naval officer who got in trouble with the navy because of his sexual orientation.
The narrative is incredibly ambiguous. On one hand, discrimination against gay men is denounced loudly, on the other the fact that Cunanan was also gay is somehow overlooked. The police gets a bad rap for underestimating Cunanan, because he was killing "just gay men", even if probably there are hundreds of unsolved cases concerning also heterosexual victims.
Finally, Cunanan is presented in the most sympathetic way. You even get a police woman sort of cracking up at the sight of his dead body, murmuring he "was just a boy"... for sure he was not Godzilla, but he killed five people for no apparent reason whatsoever, one of them with a hammer, and another after sadistic tortures.... a boy he was, but definitely not a nice one.

Darren Criss makes this series.. His acting is superb and he is scarily on point as the Sociopath he was. He makes you cringe, he makes you scared and makes you feel sick.
I don't really care how many bits of it is wrong, it was enjoyable to watch and got stronger with every episode. Very entertaining to watch.
Finn Whittrock is also very good as the tormented Military man, as is Fern as the ever cautious David.
If Criss doesn't go on to even better things after this I'll be upset.

I remember hearing about Andrew Cunanan when I was a teenager. I never knew he was a serial killer & on the FBI's 10 most wanted list. I knew about the Versace murder, but none of the rest. I learned a lot by watching this series. He was a very strange character. Mentally ill but brilliant at the same time. A total freak show. I spent a lot of time on Google fact checking while watching the show. I liked the way they skipped around back and forth throughout the series. It was put together very well. Very interesting story. Give it a watch..8 stars
Brilliant, scary and takes you to the edge of the seat !

Darren Criss has done a phenomenal portrayal of Andrew Cunanan, the killer of Gianni Versace. The whole series has been beautifully made . The characters are beautifully casted. The screenplay is so smooth. This is a real gem!
over done

Episode 1 was great, but this show went quickly down hill after that. I feel like it was so unnecessary how they put all the scenes out of order and it kind of left me annoyed at times. Just put the damn events in order! I would enjoyed it more. I appreciate the acting and hard work that has gone into the show however. I also feel like the show should have been titled Andrew Cunanan or something because it was more about him than Versace.
If You Are Planning On Watching This Series On DVD Or Blue Ray, Start With The Second Last Episode, & Work Your Way Backwards

Warning: Spoilers
Although the acting was excellent, & the drama was pretty good, the story itself suffered, because it was done backwards. When, watching the show, one had difficulty understanding what was going on with Andrew, and his motives for killing all these people, until the next episode would come, & by then, it would only fall flat. All in all, this was a very sad story.
Fact or fiction?
rosgemchar25 January 2019
I liked this as long as it stuck to Cunanan. I fast-forwarded pretty much anything to do with Versace and his sister. Cruz was a poor choice for Donatella. She looks nothing like her. Cruz is too beautiful. Have you ever seen Donatella? Ramirez as Versace did not sound Italian. Definitely Hispanic. Couldn't afford an accent coach?
Darren Criss is outstanding. I have no idea what Cunanan was like, but Criss' Cunanan is fascinating, riveting, terrifying, and pitiable.
My principal problem with this series is that it must be 90% made up, fictional.
The two main characters, Cunanan and Versace are dead. As are Cunanan's victims.
So, pretty much everything they said or did is unknowable.
No one can know what happened in that Minneapolis apartment, what went on between those three individuals.
Nor what went on between Cunanan and David, on their getaway trip, ending in David's death.
This could have been much shorter. Too much padding.
Great Storytelling and superbly acted Drama-
tm-sheehan31 August 2018
It's a long stretch to imagine Darren Criss ,who played the affable heart throb Blayne Anderson in Glee as Andrew Cunanan the psychotic serial killer, who violently murdered at least 5 men including the famous founder of the House of Versace.
American Crime Story series had such a World Wide success win with The People v OJ Simpson and I'm sure lightning will strike twice because the Assassination of Gianni Versace is as good if not better than the OJ.series.
It's beautiful to watch a reflection of the glamour and colour of the world of Versace but it's also very dark in parts when the horrors of Andrew Cunanan's sick disturbed mind which is leads him to a life of compulsive lying and a murderous spree, resulting in Versace's murder largely due to the ineptitude and neglect of the Miami Police, who knew Cunanan was heading for Miami but withheld posting wanted notices or searching for him till after Versace's killing.
.
Édgar Ramírez as Gianni Vervase
Ricky Martin as Antonio D'Amico. & Penelope Cruz as Donatella Vercase all give terrific performances but it's Darren Criss , who steals the show he is so good in this role , it's on Foxtel Showtime now ,not to be missed.
horrible accents made me cringe the whole series.
ariorojas29 January 2019
In all honesty, this is your typical Netflix formula so if you like that you'll probably enjoy this show and binge it anyway. But for me all these spaniard and latino English accents did not make it believable. I was watching a series about famous italians, but they all sounded like latin americans speaking english. As a Latin American myself it was pretty obvious. Plus Ricky Martin could not be a worst actor too smh.
Boring slow series with fake Italian accents
tommasoitaonline7 May 2019
The series is very slow, with low quality dialogues.
The actors were just alright. But please, next time you
use two Spanish/South American actors to play Italian
Characters, think about it 3 times.
They sound more like they came from a Narcos Mexico episode
other than from the South of Italy, where Versace was originally from.
I'm Italian and we don't speak like that at all in English, only
Americans cannot notice that, anyone else in the world can.
Excellent!! Great story...addictive
