Irregular, could have been better and stronger
guisreis2 December 2021
A documentary about an interesting character, a French-Brazilian activist for indigenous human rights in Ecuador and environmentalist opposition to Rafael Correa's government, a friend of the director Clara Linhares. However, the film lacks focus and, then, lacks strength (also with a toiresome pace). Besides that, while Correa did have problems (and her arrest and deportation were clearly wrong and autoritarian), but the film lacks depth in discussing Ecuadorian politics. It did not portray a broader background of political actors besides Correists and her boyfriend Carlos Pérez's indigenous movement (he was a presidential contender). Eventually, Pérez would support neo-liberal candidate Guillermo Lasso against Correa's party, whose candidate Lenín Moreno, by the way, would betray the president, in a topsy-turvy political change. The film is more about hers than about Ecuador, but there is no straight narrative either. Her non-linear life is not enough for making a great film. Exhibitionism about her intimacy (she talks about masturbation, has a bath naked in a cold lake...) also distracs more than informs. Not a bad documentary but a quite irregular outcome.
