A decent episode, with a dire ending.
Sleepin_Dragon16 July 2018
The Flower of the Fairway is an above average episode, it has a good story line, it's well acted, it's darker then first appears, but it's let down by a terrible ending.

I applaud Guy Paul for his characterisation of Raylan Reeve, he did a great job at making him an absolutely loathsome character, the regulars were all on good form, Ty Glaser was also excellent as the troubled Tamara.

I thought the script was rather good, the story unfolded, and went from being light and breezy to something more sinister, with more substance. I felt it got a bit muddled towards the end, as on first watch it wasn't totally clear who the killer was.

It wasn't one of the best, but it was a pretty good watch, until that awful ending, just before the shot I said aloud 'this would be really awful if he suddenly hit a hole in one,' and he did!

Ending

This was a terrible ending. Not only is not feasible, the evidence should not have supported it, except for the stupid detective they have in charge in the most recent episodes. Deam plays his character way, way over the top.

Above Par..........

Unlike some, I didn't ,mind this episode, come on folks, it's light entertainment not meant to be taken too seriously, a bit of fun, a couple of murders, a semi comical police inspector, a priest with an enquiring mind who spends more time solving crimes than doing mass. A nosy but lovable housekeeper, and of course the gorgeous 'Bunty' supplying some much needed glamour. Yes of course some episodes are going to be better than others, like in all long running series, but it's the characters you follow more than the plots, at least I do, and that's why I love this series. Miss Sid though.

Murder At The Fairway.

Murder is more than just taking a life. It is more complex than that. There is human emotion involved too. That is the message of this episode. That is what I like about this series. Every episode has a message and a different setting.

The Flower of the Fairway

An episode that could had easily been called 'Father Brown meets Donald Trump meets Chinatown.'

Hermione Harvey leads the locals to protest against a brash American Raylan Reeve who has opened a golf club in the village. Harvey's prize winning garden is ruined as the water to her land as been cut off. She complained to Inspector Mallory but nothing came of it, then again he has been invited to join the prestigious golf club.

Father Brown is hoping that Reeve would make a donation to the church funds but he is a man who does not believe in charity, Reeve is also getting death threats asking him to leave town. Hermione Harvey meanwhile sees a strange man hanging around her garden.

During a golf tournament, a man who carried a torch for Tamara, his daughter shows up. Morgana, his granddaughter is taking part in the tournament and so is Bunty who has assumed an identity of a Frenchwoman.

Bunty while her ball is stuck in the rough finds a corpse, later Raylan Reeve's dead body is found and Inspector Mallory suspects Hermione Harvey.

An enjoyable enough tale, it is while before we see a dead body but it was fun to see Mrs McCarthy give a running commentary on golf which irritates Bunty. The actual mystery and its resolution came across as messy and convoluted.

Bunty on the fairways

Warning: Spoilers
The Flower on the Fairway had the potential and scope to kind of be a satire on TFG who in real life ruffled the feathers of Scottish residents in Scotland with his golf course expansion, but somehow the writers pulled their punches I guess.

Anyway, the ending was, as one user reviewer states, somewhat muddled and there was kind of a lot of insinuation and innuendo to follow up on.

The racial aspect was there, with an African-American golfer initially excluded from the competition. Why couldn't the casting director cast American or Canadian actors in the American roles? The accents sounded a bit tortured.

Manages to stay above average!

Warning: Spoilers
After two dreadful episodes "The Dance of Death" and "The Cat of Mastigatus" I really hoped I'd see a surprisingly good "Father Brown" entry after that. "The Flower of the Fairway" is not a great episode, though it does manage to be just above the proper average.

Let's start with good, shall we?

. The production values are very high in this entry. The direction's smooth and the music is wonderful. The acting's generally good too. Guy Paul is very enjoyable, once one figures out what vicious character he really is. Ty Glaser was also quite strong as mentally hurt Tamara.

. The story starts off lighting tone with humor and charm. It was nice to discover however that the narrative proceeded with much serious themes. Even incest is mentioned here!

But there was a part in "The Flower of the Fairway", which I did not enjoy at all. Starting with minor errors.

. There are times (especially in the beginning) where the pacing could have been tighter. It takes a long time before the murder mystery starts, even too long to be honest.

. The biggest problem however is the ending. To be frank, the more this murder case builds, the more convoluted it sadly becomes. There are too many confessions, subplots, which make the ending very hard to follow.

Overall, a fine episode, which is ruined by the convoluted ending.

Pretty weak plot...and the American accents!
emmetlang-4262220 June 2022
Again, the BBC refuses to hire American actors to play Americans, instead using bad English actors on the cheap to play Americans with appallingly bad accents. Three of them this time!

Worst Episode

The most poorly written episode of this usually good series. Accompanied by appalling acting. Mark Williams excepted, of course.

Bunty on the golf course
coltras3514 July 2022
Local feathers are ruffled when an ostentatious American opens up a golf club near Kembleford and a body is discovered in the reeds.

Starts out light and breezy, then gets a bit darker with some serious themes, but the most enjoyable aspect is Bunty dressed as a golfer and competing on the greens, which prompts Mrs McCarthy to go on a running commentary. There's a good performance by Guy Paul as the horrid Ragland Reeve, but i found the mystery elements quite messy and the denouement is convoluted and not explained properly.

The Lambro 550 wasn't designed or produced prior to 1964.
