A class act, great episode.

The Angel of Mercy is a particularly good episode of Father Brown. Series Four, and so far Series Five has seen the show move in a slightly more serious direction, with stories a little darker, a little more deep, definitely more grown up.

The Angel of Mercy is quite dark in tone, dealing with subjects that aren't always comfortable to talk about, euthanasia, people's dignity, and the problems one associates with getting older.

The story is a damn good one, the performances are great. I must applaud the show for continuing to give us the best of British, we'd recently had Doreen Mantle, for this one we get the velvet voiced Mother of Sherlock, Wanda Ventham, and as always she steals the show. A magical actress, who I've loved in Dr Who, The Lotus Eaters, Only fools, the list goes on.

You'll never guess the outcome of this one, had us all fooled.

Loved it, 9/10

Quintessentially English Mystery
chiumt28 March 2019
I am a fan of the English mystery : Midsommer's, Agatha Christie, Agatha Raisin, etc. But this episode of Father Brown had pathos - a lot of it. And the denouement was unexpected. One of the better episodes.

The Angel of Mercy
Prismark103 February 2018
A case for modern Sherlock, well his mum at least. Wanda Ventham (mother of Benedict Cumberbatch) guest stars as Bunty's former nanny, not terminally ill in a nursing home. The home is run on strict lines with a stern matron. However some of the terminally ill patients have died in their sleep with a white feather left behind.

Father Brown has doubts that this is the work of the angel of mercy.

Mrs McCarthy not only her lost her friend Freda Knight who was in extreme pain at the nursing home, she feels she might lose her job to the new novice at the presbytery.

There are plenty of red herrings in this one which would keep you guessing.

Inspector Mallory puts his little grey cells to no use
coltras3521 July 2022
Father Brown senses something sinister afoot when Mrs McCarthy's friend is the latest villager to die in her sleep. Intriguing episode, however the modern social messages mar the entertaining quality a little. This episode is much darker in tone, however the genius detective Inspector Mallory, Bunty and Miss McCarthy offers sone light humour to balance things out.

Getting better!

Warning: Spoilers
After "The Kembleford Dragon" was unsatisfying , I hoped to see another fun "Father Brown" episode. "The Angel of Mercy" is a much better episode than the previous one, though it's still light years away from "The Jackdaw's revenge".

Let's start with good, shall we?

. The production values are as usual wonderful and so is the music. The regular's also give good performances. Wanda Ventham definitely deserves the praise she has got.

. The story has several intrigue and there are some clever twists here.

But...

. The solution didn't surprise me at all. The culprit- someone Bunty is very close to- is one of the oldest twists in the book when talking about murder mysteries.

. Also, it did take some moments before the story was interesting for me and some topics like mercy killing could have benefited from a lot more attention.

Overall: fine, but not a great "Father Brown" episode.

Guest starring Benedict's mom
safenoe12 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Wanda Ventham, the mother of Benedict Cumberbatch, guest stars in this episode dealing with euthanasia and the dignity around that in 1950s England. Anyway, it would have been quite fascinating if Benedict Cumberbatch made a guest appearance, but not to be.

Anyway, this episode is controversial as it addresses modern day issues that can tear a society apart, but does so in a Father Brownish way where Father Brown knows best.

This episode really isn't for everyone, and judging from some of the user reviews, The Angel of Mercy is very polarizing depending on which side of the euthanasia fence you're on. The coda of this episode would have been very polarizing depending on which side of the LGBTI fence you are on.

Not Chesterton's Father Brown
dabaker-5969313 October 2020
History's great fiction writers like Christie, Sayers, and Brown don't need the help of amateurs, especially when it comes to adding elements that violate the author's values and break faith with his or her published body of work. More and more in later series of Father Brown, producers felt the need to manipulate Chesterton's detective to make social statements on 21st Century life. A shame to tarnish Chesterton and pervert his work in this way. Cardinal rule; stay true to the creator of the work you trade in and make your profit from.

Shameful!

Typical nonsense concerning assisted death. Misinterpreting Stoics as well... Never expected it from Father Brown ;-(((
