A film about an epic night in Greece. The film tells the story of the 1968 basketball europe cup's final. You will see how AEK of Greece won the legends of slavia Prague. Inside of some really emotional fictional stories of the people that lived that time, the director show us just how important this match was for everyone in Greece. Some are really painful and some are really funny. I personally likedthe story of the guy that promised a wedding to the woman he loved (but didnt want to marry) if AEK wins. The dirctor also hymns AEK as the mediation of the stories of the refugees that came from m. Asia at 1922. the highlight line of the movie ''the others may win with numbers, we will win with our history" i thinks describes it better. Its a story about a team that reach the highest mountain but never forgot where it came from.

It is a bittersweet film that will bring tears on your eyes but also smile on your face. A bittersweet film like history of Greece. Like history of the team of AEK.

A docu-fiction that by focusing on the win of European Cup from AEK Basketball team, telling the story of Greek refugees from Minor Asia and Istanbul, the story of Greek Dictatorship (1967-1973) and the facts that change the world on year of 1968.

I would like to drop this note for history here, I watched the movie today in Kadikoy, Istanbul at the Istanbul Film Festival, my third movie in two days, and the only one where in the end people were clapping and cheering. You may be surprised to hear this. Reason is simple; your story and ours are so intermingled. Felt like looking into a mirror. Our sentiments, emotions, culture and even physical appereance are so similar. Today, one can hardly understand how we had been through what we had been through in the past.
I cried when the brothers found each other that evening, on a most unlikely time and place, after more than 40 years of seperation. Makes one trust in the power of hoping and believing. What do you say, can brothers on seperate sides of the Aegean may also join in peace one day?
Great story telling that touches hearts, a rare gem indeed, worthy of its inspirers' honorable legacy.

Boulmetis thought outside the box to create one of the more inventive, innovative films in recent memory.
1968 is a documentary, and at the same time it is not strictly a documentary. It is a docu-drama, but unlike any other docu-drama I have seen. It is a regular narrative movie, but has elements not usually found in regular releases. Boulmetis has mixed all these elements of docu-drama, documentary, and regular release into a combination that works.
The movie concerns the victory of AEK, a Greek basketball team, in 1968 over Czechoslovakia. While the event is practically unknown outside Greece, it has a special place in the ethnic memory. The victory came at a time when the Greek nation needed a boost in morale the most. The previous year, Colonels in the Greek army engineered a coup; it was a time of apprehension, uncertainty, and fear.
Boulmetis has created a time capsule of that match. He includes archival photographs ad recordings of radio play-by-play or the match. He interviews of the participants who look back fifty years ago at the event. He has also assembled a troupe of actors portraying vignettes of ordinary Greeks following the game and sharing the glory. His attention to detail is extraordinary. For those around at the time, or vaguely familiar with the way things were then, it is like going through a time machine.
This movie stands on its own cinematic merits. It is English subtitled. 1968 is a completely enjoyable film.

A question of balance

Boulmetis (A touch of spice - Politiki kouzina) challenged himself with this film. The impossible effort of balancing 1000 meters above ground, in a tight rope, connecting acting with documentary seemed to be "piece of cake" for Tassos. For someone witnessed the story a "10" is underrating.
