A charming, weird and wonderful little game.

The genies are awesome. So well animated and unique. Against the grungy, depressed town of Denska, they are a colourful neon blessing.

The gameplay is satisfying. The puzzles aren't groundbreaking but you progress with a smile on your face nonetheless. The game stays fresh by introducing new mechanics during its short 5 hour campaign.

If you're feeling anxious, stressed or down, play Concrete Genie. It's calming, relaxing and a genuine pleasure to play.

Simple but effective.

'Concrete Genie (2019)' is a simple but satisfying game about the uplifting power of art. It puts you in the shoes of a shy young artist who comes across a magic paintbrush that brings his creations to life and has the ability to clear the strange darkness that is slowly enveloping his rundown town. It's a short but sweet experience, clocking in at around five or six hours in total, What it lacks in length it makes up for in charm, though. It's generally a pleasant experience. Its focus, for the most part, is on creation instead of destruction, which is (sadly) actually quite rare for a video-game. There is a bit of conflict in the title, the details of which I won't spoil here, but it isn't too intense and there's never a focus on violence. Instead, you're allowed to let your creativity roam free as you progress through the game's various locations. The gameplay itself revolves around simple, semi-open world platforming and some rudimentary puzzles involving different types of customisable creature you bring to life with your paintbrush. It's basic but enjoyable, able to appeal to gamers of any age. Each of its stages has, essentially, something new to offer and its pacing is on point throughout. Its narrative isn't exactly deep, but it's well-told and has some solid messages at its core. One of the game's main flaws is that its third act takes a bit of an odd turn, transforming the title into something it doesn't quite seem interested in being. Still, it's a fun enough segment in and of itself. Overall, the experience is charming, friendly and fun. It isn't particularly complex or challenging, but it's entertaining enough. 7/10.

My favorite game

If you like emotional indie games this one is perfect.

I have played it multiple times just to chill out with the genies and enjoy the art and atmosphere.

The game has a powerful message and story. I wish I was able to play this game when I was young as comfort and inspiration. Even now in my late 20s it does inspire me and shows how important the impact of art is. It feels magical.

The controls are a bit difficult to navigate at times but you get used to it.

If you want to have action or something fast paced this isn't the game for you neither if you are looking for long hours of gameplay, but if you want a relaxed mindful and emotional game this is a game for you.

Unique, intriguing, but frustrating controls
heath-jeffrey3 April 2023
I could only play this for an hour or so because the controls are too frustrating for me.

In short, if you like playing with default Y-axis settings (where pushing forward on the controls moves up, and pushing backward moves down), give it a go. But if you like inverted Y-axis settings (like the real world, where you lean forward to look down, and back to look up), give it a pass.

It actually has an Invert Y-Axis option, but it only impacts on half the controls for the game. And what's the point of having that as an option if it doesn't affect everything? Mixed controls are the worst possible. When it works one way for some aspects, and the other way for other aspects, you can't get used to either!!!

It's a real shame, because it looks like such a unique game. A dark, haunting,yet somehow aesthetically pleasing visual design and setting that looks. A perhaps slightly cheesy/overdone, yet meaningful , 'bully' storyline. And gameplay that felt like it was going to be really enjoyable, yet nothing like anything else I've played.

If only they had coded in one more line: if (invert = True) { -Y }
