I had always meant to carry on with "Sneaky Pete" having watched the first season, but for one reason or another I've left it a couple of years before carrying on with it. I enjoyed that first run and this second season is similarly good.
Having bluffed his way from under the clutches of Vince, Marius (Giovanni Ribisi) is immediately picked up by two thugs, who believe that Marius really is Pete (Ethan Embry). They're convinced that Pete actually did manage to come away from the gun range heist with a score that is currently in the possession of Pete's mother. Whilst they threaten the life of the Marius' adopted family, he tries to investigate who has hired the thugs, whilst simultaneously locating Pete's mother and keeping the family in the dark.
I said in my review of the first season that I wasn't sure how long the central theme of the show could remain convincing. By that, I mean that how long can Marius convince the family that he's Pete. This second season gets around that problem by only taking place over a few days, and by splitting up the family into various storylines, each with their own subterfuges taking place, so Marius isn't really with the bulk of his family all that much. Instead, he's away with Pete's mother, played by the ever-reliable Jane Adams in a sprawling con that begins with trying to survive the whims of another loose cannon Gangster and morphs into a "Ocean's Eleven" style heist with twists and counter twists.
Performances remain good and I think the story manages to, on the whole, remain on the right side of plausible. There are some elements of Margo Martindale's story that I'm less convinced about, but I'll not post them for fear of being too spoiler-y.
It's a shame that this never seemed to find the enough of an audience to run longer than the three seasons we got, as what we have had has been good stuff. One more season to go.
