- The Story of Sales explores the history, evolution, complexity, contribution, and future of sales. Experts, authors, and real life salespeople explore how sales has impacted humanity, and how the profession has impacted them.
- "Nothing happens 'til somebody sells something."
Sales is arguably the oldest profession, and yet still struggles to get the respect and legitimacy it likely deserves. From the farmer selling his produce at the market, to the tech startup account executive on their smartphone, sales has come to permeate our societies and be an ever present part of our lives, while we still conjure up images of the used-car salesman of decades past.
The Story of Sales will take viewers on a temporal and emotional journey through the world, and many subcultures, of sales. Professors, authors, and scholars educate us on where sales came from and how it has evolved, with a focused lens on the most recent centuries of rapid innovation. Practitioners and experts give us an inside view of the pressure and thrill, struggle and connection, disappointment and exhilaration involved in the life of a salesperson. We explore both the socioeconomic forces that have had an impact on the profession, and the internal forces that drive us to sell, and be sold to. And, we'll join real salespeople, riding the roller coaster with them, from the varying points-of-view of an experienced veteran, a top-performer, and an ambitious newcomer.
The first act in the Story of Sales will introduce us to our heroes: real salespeople. We'll outline some history of the sales profession, and uncover its origins. Scholars will share the ways sales grew in lockstep with the growth of societies and innovation.
Our second act will take us deeper into the life of a sales professional. We'll follow our heroes as they balance work and life, meet the demands of their job, and interact with colleagues and customers. We'll examine the modernization of sales and where it took on a bigger role in business and culture. Our thought leaders will share the nuance and complexity of the profession, as well as its practitioners. As we take side-trips into niches of sales, we'll uncover the wide range of personalities and environments where sales thrives.
As we conclude this journey, some natural questions will arise: What is the future of sales? Will sales people have jobs in the future? How can sales stand the test of time? We'll touch on the technology and innovation that has characterized recent decades, and how sales has benefited from, and played a part in, its proliferation.
At last, we'll reflect on the story we've told, and present final thoughts on why sales is a great profession, how it can be even better, and how we can make sure sales thrives well into the future.
