Astrakan (David Depesseville)
Astrakhan fur is unique: dark, beautiful, and stripped exclusively from newborn lambs, even ones killed in their mother’s womb. (Stella McCarthy once said it’s like wearing a fetus.) That ruthlessness—a sense of lost innocence; blood sacrifice—runs deep in Astrakan, a new film from France and one of the better in Locarno this year; and if that title isn’t enough to give pause, plenty else in the opening exchanges will. The first act is a procession of flags, both red and false: at the opening the protagonist, Samuel, lightly goads a snake in the reptile house of a zoo; moments later a rabbit is hung and skinned in his kitchen with all the ceremony of...

Nicolas Cage has explained why he prefers the term “thespian” to “actor”.
The Pig star made an appearance during Wednesday night’s episode (14 April) of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to promote his forthcoming horror-comedy Renfield.
Cage has previously said that he identifies as as “thespian” as opposed to an “actor”.
Host Stephen Colbert quoted Cage to himself, and asked the Mandy star to explain the reason behind his preference.
“I’m curious why being pretentious is appealing to you,” joked Colbert.
Cage clarified that he never told people not to refer to him as an actor.
“Ok, that’s a great thing you brought that up. What I was saying was, of course you can call me an actor. By the way, I never said, ‘Don’t call me an actor. Call me a thespian,’” he said.
“That’s what clickbait universe was putting out there and somehow got picked up by CNN.

Exclusive: Iranian-British director and artist Mehdi Norowzian has just wrapped the Iran shoot of his new drama A Time In Eternity starring Venice 2022 jury member Leila Hatami, best known for her roles in A Separation, The Pig and Imagine.
The production marks the first feature in two decades for Norowzian, who was Oscar-nominated for his 1999 short film Killing Joe and shortly after directed Joseph Fiennes, Elizabeth Shue, Dennis Hopper and Sam Shepherd in the drama Leo.
In the interim, he built a career as a top commercials director, working closely with Ridley Scott’s Rsa Films under the banner of Joy@Rsa.
Hatami stars as a woman who is on a relentless and potentially futile quest to track down her missing husband. In the backdrop, the situation puts untold pressure on her relationship with her 12-year-old daughter, while she is also dealing with the unwanted attention of her amorous brother-in-law.

Influential filmmaker’s best-known film is 1973 Cannes grand jury winner ’The Mother And The Whore’.
French film company Les Films du Losange has acquired the entire catalogue of influential post-New Wave director Jean Eustache, comprising five feature-length works and six short films.
The deal with the late filmmaker’s son Boris Eustache is a coup for Les Films du Losange’s new co-heads Charles Gillibert and Alexis Dantec who recently took over the company, which was established in 1962 by New Wave directors Eric Rohmer and Barbet Schroeder.

The announcement of a new Nicolas Cage film project is almost a bit like Mad Libs. You start with Nicolas Cage and a film. Then to come up with the plot, co-stars, and filmmaker, you just randomly pick some nouns, adjectives, and names out of a hat. But you know what? We wouldn’t have it any other way. And with that in mind, let’s talk about the upcoming film “Pig.”
According to Deadline, Cage has been cast in the upcoming thriller, “Pig.” And if you’re sitting there thinking, “Sorry, but I’m just fully done with this Nic Cage shit, and there’s nothing you can say that will win me back.” Well what if I said that “Pig” is basically “John Wick” but with Cage and a truffle-hunting animal?

Nicolas Cage has signed on to star in another interesting movie called Pig. Cage is also producing the film in which he plays “a truffle hunter living alone in the wilderness in Oregon. When his beloved foraging pig is kidnapped, he must journey into Portland – and his long-abandoned past – to recover her.”
I don’t even know what to say about that, except that it’s the kind of film project we should expect Cage to want to be a part of! The film will also star Alex Wolff (Hereditary) and it will be directed by Michael Sarnoski from a script he wrote. The director had this to say in a statement:
“What began as a very personal project has transformed into a labor of love for so many talented people. I’m thrilled for us all to be bringing this strange world to life.”

Someone will kidnap Cage's beloved pig, in Pig.
Nicolas Cage and Alex Wolff (Hereditary) have signed up for a new independent drama movie called Pig.
Collider confirmed the news, which was fairly light on details, but the film will be directed by Michael Sarnoski in his feature film debut. In the project, Cage will play "a truffle hunter who lives alone in the wilderness of Oregon with his beloved foraging pig. When the pig is kidnapped, he must journey into Portland — and his long-abandoned past — to recover her." Production got underway this week.
That's all we need to know, isn't it? Cage plays a truffle hunter. In the wilderness. He has a beloved pig. The pig is kidnapped. He has to find her. The kid from Hereditary fits in there somewhere. We've received the maximum amount of information required to decide if we're going to watch it!

Over the years, Nicolas Cage has appeared in his share of, shall we say, unique films; while some have been wondrous and bizarre, others have simply been bad, but I've got my fingers crossed that the actor's next project will be one of the former. This text, generously provided by curator Elhum Shakerifar, is adapted from the introduction to a zine co-edited by Faye Harvey and published on occasion of "Poetry in Motion: Contemporary Iranian Cinema," running April 3–24, 2019 at the Barbican in London. Mitra Farahani's Fifi Howls from Happiness is showing April 8 - May 7, 2019 on Mubi in many countries around the world.A few years ago, I attended the Tokyo International Film Festival, where a handful of Iranian films received their World Premieres. The first one I attended was by a debut director. His film told the story of a musician whose life ended suddenly, abruptly, whilst he was still in his youth. It was an unfettered reflection on the greater, unanswerable questions in life. When the Q&A began, the first question was about a scene in which the young musician had visited a man to borrow an instrument. This man was portrayed as overweight,...

Helping create the new Iranian Film Festival New York, which has its inaugural edition January 10 – 15 at the IFC Center, was the realization of a long-held dream. My initial encounter with Iranian cinema came at the first festival of post-Revolutionary Iranian films held in New York, at the Walter Reade Theater in the fall of 1992. Discovering the work of directors such as Abbas Kiarostami, Dariush Mehrjui, Bahram Beyzai, and many others was literally a life-changing experience for me; I began writing about Iranian cinema at every opportunity and made a number of trips to Iran to study the subject up close.
In 2017, my friend Ahmad Kiarostami invited me to go to Tehran and speak at a memorial for his father, Abbas, who died the previous year. The event was held in conjunction with Iran’s annual Fajr International Film Festival. While there, I met Armin Miladi, who distributes Iranian films in the U.

Fresh of their win for best animated series at June’s Annecy Animation Festival, Tonko House has granted Variety access to a full episode of the series adaptation of their Oscar-nominated short film “The Dam Keeper.” The episode has not been seen previously outside of Japan.
In addition to the attention from the Academy, the short film also earned nominations at Berlin, Toronto and the Annies.
