There are some things in this world that even science can’t explain. Like the mysterious black magic where a spooky spell can control people’s minds, making them puppets in the hands of the caster! Just imagine someone having power over you and making you do anything and everything they want. In the movie Shaitaan, the devilish Vanraj Kashyap, played by Madhavan, tries to do exactly that. In Bollywood, we’ve seen explorations of black magic in films like Bulbul, Pari, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. In Shaitaan, Vanraj thinks of himself like he’s the almighty God, way stronger than us regular humans. He’s planning this sinister ritual, trying to use innocent girls like Janvi, played by Janki Bodiwala, to gain the ultimate power. This Janvi happens to be the daughter of Kabir, played by Ajay Devgn. But as his sinister ritual is set to take place on the night of Umbra,...

Indian producer Prerna Arora is including intimacy coordination clauses in actors’ legal agreements. Arora, known for acclaimed films “Toilet: Ek Prem Katha” and “Pari” is believed to be one of the first Indian producers to do so.
Intimacy coordination is a nascent field in Indian cinema with Aastha Khanna Bhardwaj (Netflix’s “Murder Mubarak”) being one of the pioneers in the Hindi-language Bollywood industry and Jayalakshmi Sundaresan (“Iruttu Araiyil Murattu Kuththu”) in the Tamil-language Kollywood industry. Shakun Batra’s Prime Video film “Gehraaiyaan,” headlined by Deepika Padukone, was one of the first Bollywood films to have a dedicated intimacy department and the team included Bhardwaj, Dar Gai and Neha Vyas.
Arora recognized the need to formalize protocols surrounding intimate scenes in response to industry-wide discussions on the importance of creating a supportive and respectful atmosphere on set.

“Pari,” the story of an Iranian mother’s search for her missing son in Athens, directed by Siamak Etemadi, an Iranian who lives in Greece, won the top feature film prize at the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival, an annual showcase for Greek cinema that wrapped its fifteenth edition on May 30.
“Parontes,” under its English title “Being Present,” a penetrating look at the Covid-19 crisis in Greece (pictured above), directed by Yorgos Avgeropoulos, took home Lagff’s documentary honor.
The waning pandemic once again prevented Lagff from holding its traditional red carpet closing night and Orpheus Awards Gala, but it didn’t dampen the international enthusiasm for the virtual event, which reached a global audience via the internet and spotlighted features, shorts, documentaries and – for the first time this year – animation. It also presented a series of webinars as well as live and prerecorded Q&As.

Since, for the past few years we have intensified our coverage of films that do not belong in the S/Se Asia or the Asean countries, we decided, for the first time, to have a list that deals with movies from outside these regions, essentially including movies from all Asian countries that do not belong in the aforementioned three. The list is probably the most diverse, as it includes films from Israel, Kazakhstan, Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, Palaistine and Kurdistan, although, expectedly, being one of the largest film industries in Asia, Iran has the lion’s share.
Without further ado, here are the best West Asian films of 2020, in reverse order. Some films may have premiered in 2019, but since they mostly circulated in 2020, we decided to include them.

Mumbai, Nov 15 (Ians) Actor-director Parambrata Chattopadhyay, who is currently in Himachal Pradesh on work, regrets for not being able to join the last journey of Bangla cinema legend Soumitra Chattopadhyay, who passed away on Sunday.
Parambrata, who shot into national prominence with his roles in Bollywood films like "Kahaani" and "Pari", said the late actor, to him, was "a friend who also is a teacher".
Before his death, Soumitra Chattopadhyay was shooting for a documentary titled "Abhijan" directed by Parambrata. The last he was at the shooting floor in Bharatlaxmi Studio was in October.
"Some considered him a teacher, some a guru, and so did I... he was my own, very own ‘Udayan Master'... but beyond it all, he was a dear dear friend! The last one and half years had us grow fond of each other, not as if there weren't minor disagreements now and then, like the way it happens between friends.

The edition kicks off tonight with the screening of Iranian director Siamak Etemadi’s Pari (Greece/France/Netherlands/Bulgaria/Switzerland), which was co-produced by Bulgarian production company Chouchkov Brothers. The 19 features competing for the Golden Rose Trophy are Viktor Chouchkov's 18% Grey (Bulgaria/Germany/Serbia/North Macedonia/Belgium), Yana Titova's A Dose of Happiness...

There are few tropes older than one about a person in a desperate search for something in a foreign land. With the refugee crisis that occupied the headlines in the not so distant past, the trope evolved to a sub-genre of its own, to so-called migration cinema. On the surface, “Pari”, a European co-production film by an Iranian filmmaker Siamak Etemadi, could be confused with such a film. But this Berlinale title that premiered in Panorama section of the festival is something completely different: a unique cinema experience that defies simple labeling.

We meet our eponymous protagonist on a plane to Athens. Stunned to discover that her son has vanished while studying abroad in Athens, an Iranian woman sets off on a desperate search across the Greek capital to find him. Navigating a foreign and forbidding landscape, she’s forced to also travel deep within herself, uncovering buried truths and offering a chance for her own reinvention.
“Pari” is the feature debut of writer-director Siamak Etemadi, who was born and raised in Iran and lives in Athens. Produced by Heretic (Greece), Le Bureau (France), Topkapi (Netherlands), and The Chouchkov Brothers (Bulgaria), it had its world premiere Feb. 25 in the Panorama section of the Berlin Film Festival. Heretic Outreach is handling world sales.
Conceived in part as what Etemadi calls a “love letter” to his mother, the film is a portrait of a woman (Melika Foroutan) unbowed by her own fears and inhibitions, driven by an almost blind determination to find her son.

Netflix will release the animated short Sitara: Let Girls Dream from two-time Oscar-winning and three-time Emmy-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
The short tells the story of Pari, a 14-year-old girl who dreams of becoming a pilot while growing up in a society that doesn’t allow her to dream.
“Young girls everywhere still face considerable hurdles in achieving their dreams,” Obaid-Chinoy said Friday. Sitara embodies that struggle; it is the story of Pari, a young girl who dreams of becoming a pilot and is robbed of it. For me, Sitara is more than a film; it is a movement that we want to start across the world, that encourages parents to invest in their girls’ dreams, freeing their daughters from the burdens of early marriage.”
Vice Studios financed and produced Sitara. Imke Fehrmann serves as producer on the film. Women’s rights activist Gloria Steinem and Darla Anderson — the Academy Award-winning...

Not long ago, it would have been difficult for Greek production outfit Heretic to board a project such as “Do Not Hesitate,” an ambitious, Afghanistan-set war drama that is partly being filmed on the island of Crete.
But for Giorgos Karnavas, who is producing “Hesitate” alongside the Netherlands’ Lemming Film, the calculus has changed since Greece introduced a 35% cash rebate last year. “The cash rebate gives us the [ability] to step into projects that we would not be able to otherwise, and is also a tool to attract new projects that appeal to us,” Karnavas says.
The rebate has given a fresh jolt to an industry still recovering from the country’s crippling economic crisis, with a wave of majority and minority co-productions in the cards from Greek producers. Animal welfare"This has been my calling for years now and my dream is finally coming true," Anushka said in a note she posted on Twitter.IANSAnushka Sharma/PTIBollywood actor Anushka Sharma, who turned 30 on Tuesday, wants to start the new decade of her life by building an animal shelter. The Pari actor, who married cricketer Virat Kohli last year, penned a note to announce the project on her special day. "On my birthday, in my own little way, I'm starting something that will give our fellow living beings equal rights, equal care and equal love. I'm building an animal shelter just outside Mumbai - a home for those animals that are stranded, left to fend for themselves, have to brave harsh surroundings. A home where they will be cared for, loved, protected and nurtured," she wrote in the note posted on Twitter. "This has been my calling for years now and my dream is finally coming true. I will seek your time, support and advice to make this home a place that looks after fellow living beings with utmost care and compassion - all in due course of time. Until then, I seek your blessings and your prayers," she added. Anushka pointed out how while humans "have a voice to speak up, we have fundamental rights, we can ask for justice, we have families, near and dear ones to love us and take care of us", and urged people to "think about the animals". "Think about how they live, how they are treated, think about their rights, think if they are treated fairly? And what's worse, even if they aren't being treated well, they have no means of doing anything about it and that's where we have to come in as humans who stand up for all living beings. "It is our responsibility. The whole purpose of being the strongest species is to look out for the welfare of all those, not so strong ones around us, so that we truly can give back to our great Mother Earth and live harmoniously." pic.twitter.com/CgtI9xS20w — Anushka Sharma (@AnushkaSharma) May 1, 2018 For her special day, her husband posted a sweet message for her on social media. "Happy B'day my love. The most positive and honest person I know. Love you," he captioned a picture of them. Happy B'day my love. The most positive and honest person I know. ControversyThe final 3D application of the film was submitted to Cbfc on Thursday (December 28).Ians After months of uncertainty, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's controversial Hindi film Padmavati will release on January 25 as Padmavat with a U/A certificate. It will clash with Akshay Kumar's Pad Man. "It will release as 'Padmavat' on January 25. The film has got U/A certificate," sources at the film's production banner Viacom18 Motion Pictures told Ians. "Padmavati" -- now "Padmavat" -- was earlier slated for release on December 1 but the studio had voluntarily deferred it following a long-stretched controversy. The movie, starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor, has been mired in a row after the Shree Rajput Karni Sena claimed it distorted historical facts related to the Rajput community. The group has been persistent in its demand for a ban on the movie despite Bhansali's clarification before a Parliamentary committee that the row over the movie was just based on rumours. Last month, the Central Board of Film Certification (Cbfc) -- in consultation with a special advisory panel -- decided it will grant U/A certificate to the movie but subject to five modifications, including title change. The makers were asked to add disclaimers -- one of them regarding not glorifying the practice of Sati and also relevant modifications in the song "Ghoomar" to befit the character portrayed. An official communication from team "Padmavat" regarding the final modifications has not been made yet. Its release date announcement led to a stir in the film trade circles. Film and trade business expert Girish Johar told Ians: "It's a complex situation for 'Padmavat'. They have too short a time before the release, plus there are hurdles for it as certain states have announced a blanket ban, and the Karni Sena continues to oppose the movie. "However, from the box office point of view, it's a great thing that two big films -- 'Padmavat' and 'Pad Man' -- will release on the extended weekend. It will be a huge weekend. Audiences will have a choice of both films. Obviously the better one will have a longer run." "Pad Man" will see Akshay Kumar take on the role of a real life hero who introduced low-cost sanitary napkins for the hygiene and safety of women in his village. According to the buzz, the "Padmavat" release announcement has also impacted the release date of movies like "Aiyaary" and "Pari". ...

He used to be the blue-eyed boy of almost every urban filmmaker, but seems to have lost the hot seat to some of his contemporaries. Now, after bagging the most coveted copyright in the Bengali film industry, Parambrata Chatterjee is back in business with Feluda. In a freewheeling chat with us, the actor-director-producer spoke about his journey from Topshe to Feluda, the copyright tiff with Sandip Ray and things that he no longer finds interesting in Tollywood. Excerpts: Anukul has released and everybody is praising your work… I was waiting to work with Sujoyda (Ghosh) again. In the five years since Kahaani, we’ve planned so many things — some never happened, some will happen in the coming years. But this came as a sudden opportunity and we pounced on it. Now that it’s receiving so much appreciation, I feel ratified and satisfied to the hilt. In Tollywood, nobody rubs anybody the wrong way.
