Pass on the entire trilogy if possible
The Legacy of the Bones is the second part of a trilogy based on books written by Delores Redondo: The Invisible Guardian, The Legacy of the Bones, and Offering of the Storm. The Legacy of the Bones continue with Amaia investigating crimes related to bones. Again, these cases are intertwined to her past. Can she get therapy already?
Automatic seven stars for not raining for the majority of the film and satisfying my curiosity of the mother daughter relationship. Star deductions came from another convoluted and farfetched plot and the ending. I won't spoil the ending, but it's for the raccoons. Amaia's husband is the least likable character in both films, he's insufferable and unneeded, if Amaia cheats, I won't be surprised. The aunt is the most likable character in both, Tia Engrasi needs to be protected at all cost. Since it took two days to watch, 'The Legacy of the Bones', I won't be watching the third installment anytime soon.
The second film did a great job of maintaining the dark and moody atmosphere without the storm of 40 days and 40 nights. The FBI friend needs to go because he's a waste of time and space. Amaia has proven to be an incompetent detective that gains kudos via her cases being solved through luck and her colleagues detective skills. The pacing is too slow in some places and too fast in others, making the film a little disjointed and at times confusing. The relationship Amaia has with her colleague is very cozy, they have great chemistry, and he is more likable than Amaia. Oftentimes when I see opposite sex characters get this close, it means either they will have an affair, they're related, he's gay, and they're comfortable being that close because of it, or the man is a stalking obsessed psychopath that getting too fresh with his married victim. Cliché movies always do the illicit affair.
If you liked the first film, then you most likely will like the second film. The second film tied up some loose ends from the first film. My guess is, the third film will do the same for the second film but it's hard watching a trilogy this boring. I don't think I had this many snack breaks since Roma. The first and second film are about the same in terms of rating. They have different strengths and weaknesses. I liked the second film more despite it being a weaker film.
Ultimately, this is a low intelligence crime noir film. Skip the trilogy if you prefer smarter films. I still haven't watched the last one. I feel obligated to, since I started and need to know the ending. It took me ten years to finish a book I hated, hopefully the last film won't take me as long.
