On January 22, 2000, writer/director Karyn Kusama‘s feature debut “Girlfight” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and, like “sex, lies, and videotape” and “Reservoir Dogs” before it, announced the arrival of a born filmmaker. Kusama has gone on to direct a wide array of great films and television episodes, including the once underrated but now properly exalted horror movie “Jennifer’s Body” and her searing masterpiece “Destroyer,” but “Girlfight” holds its own against Kusama’s later, more well-resourced work — her tale of a troubled teenager (a then-unknown Michelle Rodriguez) who channels her aggression into boxing has held up beautifully thanks to Kusama’s intensely personal investment in the story and her instinctive awareness of where to place the camera to tell that story with maximum impact.
If the movie, which Criterion has recently released on Blu-ray with a gorgeous new transfer supervised by Kusama, looks even better now than when it was released,...

Of all the various actors who've made their mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sebastian Stan might be the one who's chosen the most interesting career path upon stepping outside of the superhero limelight. Stan hasn't exactly shied away from some of the more challenging and, occasionally, downright controversial roles out there, arguably beginning this little streak of sorts with director Craig Gillespie's "I, Tonya" in 2017. He followed this up with a supporting turn in Karyn Kusama's brutal "Destroyer," the bizarre horror/comedy "Fresh" (let's just say that movie packs a bite), and, of course, his Emmy-nominated performance as Tommy Lee in "Pam & Tommy," the Pamela Anderson-centric Hulu miniseries that stirred up no headlines whatsoever.
Not content to rest on his laurels, Stan promptly went and attached himself to a role that likely gave his agent no shortage of heart palpitations: a movie about Donald Trump's rise to infamy.

Nicole Kidman is not one of the highest-paid actresses in the world for no reason. With her consistently incredible work in film and television, the actress has time and again proved that she can do anything and everything, no matter the genre. Whether it’s a thriller like Destroyer or a rom-com like Just Go with It, Nicole Kidman knows just how to do justice to her roles.

She has also worked as a producer on many projects including Taylor Sheridan’s spy thriller, Special Ops: Lioness. The television series stars Zoe Saldaña in the lead role as Joe, a CIA officer in charge of the Lioness program. Nicole Kidman also has a supporting, yet pivotal role in the series, which was custom-made by Taylor Sheridan himself just so he could get the actress to come in front of the cameras for the show.

Superman is one of the most beloved characters in fictional media and arguably one of the strongest. Several incarnations of the Man of Steel exist across different forms of media but his depiction in the 2000s animated series Justice League Unlimited remains the superior one.
A still from Justice League Unlimited
One particular moment in the series depicts the true strength of Superman that hasn’t been emulated in any other medium. While Henry Cavill’s Superman is depicted as unhinged and intimidating in the Knightmare future of the Dcu, the Justice League Unlimited incarnation is far superior, and here is why.
Superman’s Most Intimidating Moment in Justice League Unlimited Proves Why the Dcau is the Best
Justice League Unlimited premiered almost 18 years ago, but remains one of the best animated shows, especially within the Dcau. The series has one of the best depictions of Superman and the series finale proves why.

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss Sunday’s BAFTA Awards, where two films are expected to win big.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! Or should I say, ‘ello guv’nor? We’re back here to type about this weekend’s BAFTA Awards, where we both expect “Oppenheimer” to dominate. As we discussed with our voices this week (no English accents required), I have Christopher Nolan’s awards juggernaut winning 10 honors — including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. and — my most galaxy brain pick — Best Supporting Actress for Emily Blunt. The Sundance Film Festival on Sunday night hosted the world premiere of Aaron Schimberg’s A Different Man starring Sebastian Stan, Adam Pearson and The Worst Person in the World breakout Renate Reinsve in her first American film.
Stan toplines the A24 release as an aspiring actor, Edward, who undergoes a radical medical procedure to drastically transform his appearance. But a new face turns into a nightmare when it causes him to lose a dream role he was born to play when the playwright/object of his affections, Reinsve, replaces him with someone who looks nearly identical to his former self, Pearson, a man with a disfigured face.
As for Pearson, he lives with neurofibromatosis (type 1), a rare genetic condition that causes excess body tissue to grow predominantly on his face. The condition fuels the plot of A Different Man and the actor, Pearson, actually inspired the film after having...

Something interesting happened the other day. I reached out to Arrow Video to get a review copy of their upcoming Conan the Barbarian 4k release, The Conan Chronicles (which also features Conan the Destroyer). I was told their retail stock of the much-anticipated title had already sold out (don’t worry – more is on the way). To me, this is a very promising sign, with interesting companies like Arrow, Scream/Shout Factory, and Kino Lorber making really thoughtful, beautifully assembled 4K collector’s editions of cult hits on physical media that, despite being more niche than they were twenty or so years ago, are actually selling really well.
Studios have all but abandoned physical media, at least as far as library titles go. Some studios, like Paramount, still re-release their classics through labels like Paramount Presents, but for many companies, these titles are an afterthought, even for their biggest movies.

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro says there are only a few "universal characters" in fiction, such as Pinocchio, Frankenstein, Sherlock Holmes, and Tarzan. Far be it from me to compare my wisdom to Gdt's, but I would add Superman to that roster. The first and most mythic American superhero, there's something about Clark Kent everyone responds to.
With the original 1978 "Superman" film, director Richard Donner and screenwriter Mario Puzo spun co-creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's original Moses myth into a Christ allegory. Zack Snyder, director of "Man of Steel," echoed that but with a darker focus on the burdens of being mankind's savior, "Last Temptation of Christ" style.
John Byrne, who relaunched Superman comics in 1986, focused on the immigrant parable of Superman as the Last Son of Krypton living on Earth. Byrne is the one who redefined Superman as Clark Kent first, Kal-El second.

In the early eighties, Arnold Schwarzenegger had become a star through his role in Conan the Barbarian. Following a critically maligned but successful sequel, Conan the Destroyer, Schwarzenegger sought to move into more contemporary roles. His contract with producer Dino De Laurentis was ending, but the legendary mogul wanted to use Schwarzenegger’s star power to launch another adaption of Robert E. Howard’s work – Red Sonja. The resulting film was a star vehicle for Brigitte Nielsen, who some saw as a potential female action icon, and Schwarzenegger, due to his contract with De Laurentis, had no choice but to appear in a critical supporting role (for which he would be top-billed) opposite Nielsen, who played the titular character.

Marvel Studios released a new trailer for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” during the Super Bowl, teasing the final chapter of the story of the MCU’s intergalactic ragtag family of superheroes.
The new trailer, which you can watch above, puts the spotlight on the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), the unethical scientist responsible for turning an innocent raccoon into the gun-wielding Rocket through painful surgery and genetic manipulation. We even see Rocket get marked with the experiment tag “89P13.”
“He didn’t want to make things perfect,” bemoans Rocket. “He just hated things the way they are.”
Writer-director James Gunn, who is bringing his time with Marvel to an end as he prepares to launch a rebooted DC Universe, has said that “Vol. 3” will mark the end of the Guardians of the Galaxy in its current iteration. Dave Bautista has also said that this will be his last film as Drax the Destroyer.

Tatiana Maslany and “Scream” star Jasmin Savoy Brown are set to lead Josh Ruben’s sci-fi horror “Green Bank.”
Protagonist Pictures is launching international sales on the film, which will be shopped to buyers at this month’s European Film Market at the Berlin Film Festival. CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group are co-repping North America.
Written by Aaron Horwitz (“The Cleansing Hour”), “Green Bank” takes place in a real American town where wifi, cell service and all other radio transmissions are heavily forbidden. The film follows infant sleep-trainer Sloan (Brown), who realizes that the parents of the child she’s caring for are much more than the clueless yuppies they seem to be.
The film is produced by Big Swell Entertainment’s Andy Horwitz, whose credits include David O. Russell’s Oscar-nominated “American Hustle,” action-thriller “Triple Frontier” and “Suicide Squad.”

February is the shortest month of the year but Prime Video is paying that no mind with its jam-packed list of new releases for February 2023.
This really is an uncommonly stuffed month on the Amazon streamer and it all starts with a handful of Amazon Originals. Amazon’s original offerings kick off with the release of Dave Franco-directed romcom Somebody I Used to Know on Feb. 10. That is followed by Carnival Row season 2 – a gritty fantasy crime drama is set in a world of steampunky fairies. The show stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne and this batch of episodes will be its swan song. Meanwhile The Consultant on Feb. 24 is a dark comedy workplace thriller starring Christoph Waltz.
The biggest hits this month, however, might just be some recent cinema faves. If February is for lovers, Amazon didn’t get the memo as there are quite a few horror movies of note here.

Jade Pettyjohn, whose credits include the Nicole Kidman film Destroyer, Deadwood: The Movie, and the TV shows School of Rock and Big Sky, seems to have made it a goal to become a scream queen in 2022. Every few weeks, we seem to hear that she has signed on to play a role in another genre project. Back in April it was the supernatural thriller Burnouts. In September, it was the Seven Deadly Sins horror film All My Friends Are Dead. And now Deadline reports that Pettyjohn will star in The Not Polly, the next horror movie from Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City director Johannes Roberts.
Producer and music industry executive Yasushi Akimoto crafted the story for The Not Polly, in which Pettyjohn will be playing Polly, the most popular and most beautiful girl in school, who wakes up after a party to find that she is trapped in a morgue,...

Black Adam is not the first character that comes to mind when thinking of who could headline a DC movie. Starting out as one of DC Comics’ best villains, primarily in conflict with Captain Marvel/Shazam, the ancient Egyptian super-being has since transformed himself into a more morally ambivalent character and ally to some of DC’s traditional heroes. But as the lead of his own film?
For reasons known only to him, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has seen the character (also known as Teth-Adam) as the comic book creation he was born to play, and after more than a decade of development, here we are. But Black Adam the movie, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan) and also starring Aldis Hodge, Pierce Brosnan, Noah Centineo, and Sarah Shahi, comes during a transitional time for the DC Extended Universe or whatever it’s being called these days.

I sincerely admire Dave Bautista's dedication to being a legit character actor. It would've been hard to blame him, had the former WWE star elected to turn himself into a "brand" (à la Dwayne Johnson or Ryan Reynolds) after breaking out with "Guardians of the Galaxy," given his dire financial situation heading into that film. Instead, he's taken it upon himself to actively seek out a wide range of exciting projects to work on.
Denis Villeneuve, Rian Johnson, M. Night Shyamalan — Bautista has singled out some of the most captivating storytellers in the biz to collaborate with of late, in between reprising Drax the Destroyer and popping up in shows like "See." His next project, "Cooler," is no exception. The original action thriller reunites Bautista with writer/director Drew Pearce for the second time after 2018's "Hotel Artemis," a futuristic neo-noir flick that, while a bit of a mess,...

The long-awaited release of World of Warcraft Classic‘s Wrath of the Lich King update is finally here. As players prepare to dive back into one of WoW‘s most beloved expansions (or play through it for the first time), the question on many minds is simply “Which WoTLK class is the best of them all?”
As is usually the case, it’s kind of hard to answer that question. Not only does every WoTLK class (and specialization) bring something special to the game, but how much you get out of a class tends to depend on how much you understand that class. A great player at a “bad” class can often outperform a bad player at a “great” class. That’s very important to...

While Tatiana Maslany has mostly leant her talents to TV, she is far from just a “small screen” actor. Whether She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is the first time you’re seeing the Canadian actress showcase her skills, or if you’ve been a fan of hers since before she joined the Clone Club, there’s no denying that she is truly one of the greatest actors out there. Maslany has played a wide range of characters so far (and I’m not just talking about Orphan Black) that prove what a talented performer she is.
To celebrate the success of She-Hulk (and her Sept. 22 birthday!) here are some of Tatiana Maslany’s best roles to date:

In what is arguably Maslany’s most well-known project yet, she plays a total of seventeen different characters throughout the course of Orphan Black’s five season run. While some...

Actress Tatiana Maslany nearly gave up acting at the age of 20. Starting work as a child actor when she was 11 and landed a full time job in Canadian kids TV show a2030 Ce’ as a teenager, the ‘Orphan Black’ actress revealed she almost walked away from her career after becoming disillusioned with her life choices, reports aceshowbiz.com.
“I suddenly had this urge to re-evaluate why I was doing it (acting). Was I just doing it because it was this thing I did as a kid?” she explained to The Guardian.
However, she changed her mind and decided to commit to her career after watching Gena Rowlands’ 1974 film ‘A Woman Under the Influence’.
Tatiana went on, “I thought, ‘Yes, that’s it! That’s what I want!’ I wanted that level of freedom and inventiveness and presence and connection. It was so powerful to watch. That movie showed me what was possible.

When Tatiana Maslany was 20, she wondered whether acting was really for her. The Canadian was already 11 years into her career, having begun working as a child, and had recently relocated from Regina in Saskatchewan to Toronto in order to be where the jobs were. “I suddenly had this urge to re-evaluate why I was doing it,” she says. “Was I just doing it because it was this thing I did as a kid?” But then she watched John Cassavetes’ 1974 film A Woman Under the Influence, in which Gena Rowlands’ suburban housewife reaches breaking point. “And I thought: ‘Yes, that’s it! Boss fights are a recurring element in most modern video games. While not every game out there features traditional bosses, many titles at least usually elevate an opponent far above the standard rank and file enemies. However, like all things in video games, the very concept of a boss fight had to start somewhere. The question is, “Which video game did boss fights first?”
If you were to guess what the first video game boss fight ever was off the top of your head, your mind might jump to someone like Bowser from Super Mario Bros. On paper, that assumption makes a lot of sense. Not only did Super Mario Bros. establish so many concepts that would later go on to become standard, but those battles against Bowser feature so many of the ideas we typically associate with standard boss fights. Bowser was big, required special tactics/mechanics to defeat,...

Guns N’ Roses staged their first gig of 2022 Saturday night in Portugal, where the reunited rockers busted out a pair of classics for the first time in three decades as well as debuted a new AC/DC cover.
Axl Rose, Slash, Duff McKagan and company — whose initial return to the stage at Welcome to Rockville was struck down by thunderstorms last week — delivered the first shakeup in their 2022 setlist when they ripped into “Reckless Life,” a fiery Hollywood Rose cut from the live half of their Lies EP, for the...

An exciting and welcomed twist to the Emmy race for outstanding television movie has arrived, as Mimi Cave’s horror-comedy “Fresh,” starring Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar-Jones, is being submitted for Primetime Emmy consideration.
This offers an interesting possibility in a category that hasn’t drummed up much excitement over the last couple of years. While buzzy titles like “Bad Education” and three consecutive “Black Mirror” episodes dominated, the soulful purpose of the category has seemed to be missing. Last year’s winner, “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square,” was the only film of the five other nominees to have another Emmy nomination.
Since the separation of the TV movie and limited series categories in 1992 (merged again in 2011 before being separated again in 2014), there’s never been a traditional horror film nominated in the category. So while the category is stacked with contenders such as HBO’s “The Survivor” from...

After the 2000s seemingly kickstarted a new wave of independent horror, the 2010s (and beyond) were an exceptional time for new and emerging, as well as established, filmmakers to leave their own mark on the landscape of genre storytelling. One of the most notable aspects, or even trends, that I noticed while doing research for this entire series of retrospectives is how out of all of the decades, it feels like the 2010s was one of the best times for female filmmakers to get the opportunity to take the helm in comparison to other decades. The 1980s had a handful of women directors working in independent horror, but during both the ’90s and ’00s, it felt like the industry as a whole had taken a few steps backwards in providing female filmmakers the opportunity to tell the stories they wanted to tell.
