Frightening Experience with Local Law Enforcement!
Bronco4629 June 2017
The local sheriff's department, in this case, let this family down from the first moment of this case. The sheriff's department's decision to make the family wait 24 hours may have prevented finding the young girl in the case alive. They then did the most amateurish search of the missing girl's car that it was rendered useless as a piece of evidence. The family had to call the FBI, the sheriff's office did not. But any evidence the sheriff's office had was so badly handled it was useless. Which made his and his wife's appearance in this episode so surprising. There was no explaining away the mistakes made by his department. After all this, it's hard to imagine they could foul up any worse. Well, then they brought the case to court against the wrong man. The local detective said things on the stand that caused a mistrial. Which was a good thing for the man they had accused! Finally, years later a cold case detective got involved. His investigation led to the proper person being charged. But the bad stuff doesn't stop there. Not only did they wind up letting the vicious murderer plead to a lower charge. It was later determined that the defense attorneys were holding back information. Important information. The sheriff and everyone associated with that office should be ashamed of themselves. And they needed retraining. But to me, the most disgusting actions were those of the defense attorney associated with the 2002 case. He should have face some form of punishment.

Arguably the most emotional, compelling of all the Cold Case Files episodes!

Warning: Spoilers
The Jessica Dishon case was easily my favorite covered within the Cold Case Files series. I find myself rewatching it often, and each time, the Dishon family is more likable, more relatable than before. They were hard-working folks that did everything right when their beloved daughter went missing even amidst great prejudice and what I can only imagine was an overwhelming feeling of futility. The sheriff's office (alongside Stanley Dishon) are the true "bad guys" in this case, from their bungling of the missing persons report on day one to bringing charges against the wrong man to bristling when the Dishon family seeks help from the FBI. The whole episode is gripping from start to finish and a true testament to the fact that 1. CSA (and kidnapping) victims are usually related to their abuser, and 2. Law enforcement officers are privy to the same hubris and idiocy as the criminals the seek.

Tragedy Compounded
Pequod883 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
No idea why this high caliber episode is missing from Hulu. My curiosity took me to freevee. The horrific murder and aftermath made for an especially compelling episode. Cold Case Files is good at being honest about the facts without ever diminishing the victim or taking cheap shots at a small town police force with limited resources. In this case, the producers could have taken the gloves off in terms of lazy, shoddy police work. Again, we find a dedicated and skilled cold case detective take on a formidable challenge years after the crime. Detective Hunt gets down to business and moves the tragedy to a measure of justice.

From an absence of any immediate search or urgency, to charging and wrong man and bungling the trial, to a failure to go over the evidence gathered by private investigators for the defense, the amateurish and unprofessional local police compounded the tragedy at every turn. While it is clear that small town police forces draw from a limited pool with little to offer for a career in law enforcement, the sloth of the local force is especially noteworthy here. Hats off to Detective Hunt for her dedication and fine work. Can't blame Mr. Dishon for wanting to deal out a larger measure of justice. May the killer's time in prison be especially unpleasant. Condolences to the family.

Cops were the criminals
ramblingvagabond2 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The cops were actually on the same level as the criminals in this case. They refused to even look into the disappearance, they broke the law so many times in so many ways, mishandling evidence, etc.

The wife of the dead sheriff has the nerve to be on this program and defend those cops? She's just as guilty. She and every cop left on the force from that time should be imprisoned for life with no parole.

Also, what's with everybody saying these people don't deserve justice because they're hillbillies? Saying it's ok their daughter was brutally murdered just because the father has bad teeth? What kind of sick freaks are you?

One of the craziest stories ever :/
frksprts29 May 2022
While Telovon's review has its merits, I think you need to put yourself in the families shoes. They obviously knew their daughter better than the sheriffs department & believed she would never be a runaway. The case was a challenge either way with who the murderer was, but seemed like there was a possibility to crack the case early if they acted quicker. She was kept alive, in the same area, and the brother was there to be questioned everyday if the sheriffs chose to. The heat could of been applied within the first 3-4 days. What else does the sheriffs department got going on let's be real? A little girl is missing... I can't imagine the suffering this family went through to have to rely on the FBI weeks later in what should have been a small town close knitted community INCLUDING the sheriffs department...
