Outspoken activist and celebrated actress, Sigourney Weaver did not mince words when it comes to politics. Without naming names, she made it quite clear what she thinks of wealthy businessmen who pat themselves on the backs for supporting the arts while profiting off of the planet’s demise. Like all great actors, she channeled that anger into her her latest role as Alexandra in “Marvel’s The Defenders,” coming to Netflix in August.

Neill Blomkamp (District 9) has completed a number of shorts as of late. Out of his new Vancouver based studio, Blomkamp has delivered: "The Escape," "Rakka," "Firebase," and now "Zygote." "Zygote" stars Jose Pablo Cantillo and Dakota Fanning. Characters are trying to survive on a remote base, with a deadly creature. The short film is visually stunning. And, everyone with a set of eyeballs should view it. The entire short, from Oats Studios, is hosted here. The story involves an Arctic mine. Two survivors fight for their lives, while evading a "new kind of terror!" Horror fans can see that terror, in the short below. It is made of several victims. Their eyeballs and arms have been amalgamated, in order to absorb even more survivors. Showing the continuing development of Computer Generated Imagery, the monster looks unusually life-like. Viewers should turn down the lights, while turning up the volume, to fully enjoy "Zygote.

Director Neill Blomkamp is going to push the edge on storytelling with amazing visual effects with his experimental short films.
With his Vancouver-based Oats Studios in its infancy stage, the studio has launched a series of initial short films to let the online audience give feedback and critique the company’s work. Online audiences can provide feedback through YouTube, Steam and even on Twitter. It will help Blomkamp and Oats Studios to determine the production of future filmmaking.
Zygote has been released this week which stars Dakota Fanning (War of the Worlds) and Jose Pablo Cantillo (Taken). The short film follows two survivors at an arctic mining station trying to survive against this alien/zombie-like creature made from the human limbs. The feel of the short film is like a cross between The Thing and Alien.

Neill Blomkamp wasn’t kidding about Oats Studios. After releasing the short alien thriller “Rakka” starring Sigourney Weaver and the alternate-history Vietnam War drama “Firebase” last month, the “District 9” director has just premiered “Zygote.” Dakota Fanning stars in the 23-minute sci-fi short, another in-house production from his new studio based in Vancouver. Watch below.

According to a Verge interview, “Zygote” was born of a simple idea Blomkamp had while en route from Vancouver to Toronto on a plane: “a monster made out of men.” That’s what Fanning has to contend with in his “The Thing”–inflected short, which carries a brief but evocative premise: “Stranded in an Arctic mine, two lone survivors are forced to fight for their lives, evading and hiding from a new kind of terror.”

About a month ago, Neill Blomkamp released the first entry in his new Oats Studios short film initiative, and while it had a lot of gross crocodile monsters and an appearance from Sigourney Weaver, it had a distinct lack of District 9 and Chappie star Sharlto Copley. That’s not the case for Serengeti, one of Blomkamp’s new shorts, which actually features Copley as God.
Much shorter (and a bit less graphic) than Weaver’s Rakka or the Vietnam-set Firebase, Serengeti focuses on God as a slightly disinterested overlord who treats his subjects like annoying Sims characters and leaves most of the actual work to his assistant. You can see the full short below:

Neill Blomkamp has released his third short film from his Oats Studios project. It's called God: Serengeti and it stars Sharlto Copley (District 9, Elysium, Chappie) in the role of God. It's more of a comedic type story about God and his servant playing with the early inhabitants of Earth. This is the shortest film in the series that has been released so far as it runs almost 4-minutes long. It's a great short that I think you'll enjoy!
If you haven't seen the first two short film makes sure to check them out! There's Rakka, which you can watch here and Firebase, which you can watch here. I've been loving these shorts! There's a new one called Zygote, which is set to arrive on July 12th, so stary tuned for that!

If not, you should check that out here. It shouldn’t take long, what with “Rakka’s” just-over-twenty-minute runtime, so I’ll wait.
Okay, now that we are all up to speed, there is something even newer from Blomkamp’s camp that you ought to give a look: “Firebase.”
“Firebase” is another short film that fits firmly within Blomkamp’s wheelhouse of action-packed science fiction.

District 9 director Neill Blomkamp returns with the second short film from his new Oats Sudio released for free online. And after the alien invasion story of his first Oats effort, Blomkamp this time turns to the past with a story set in the midst of the Vietnam War with mysterious forces at play deep in the deserts. Once again the scale here is truly remarkable - this is a freely released short film featuring helicopter work and extensive visual effects of both the practical and digital variety - and while I prefer the story of the first released short (Rakka) to the script here the visual talent of its creator is on obvious display. Check it out below!...

Ready for more? Neill Blomkamp's experimental sci-fi filmmaking collective Oats Studios has premiered their second short film titled Firebase, set during the Vietnam War. This ultra violent action film is kind of a mix between Predator and Apocalypse Now, with some gnarly surprises in store for those brave enough to venture into the jungle. A few weeks ago, we featured the first film Rakka (about lizard-like aliens enslaving humanity). We also posted an extensive interview with Blomkamp discussing his ideas behind Oats Studios and what they're trying to pull off. So far these two shorts have been awesome, playing with crazy original ideas that no studio would probably greenlight. You can watch the entire film below - and damn is it wicked. The story follows an American soldier named Hines "through an ever-deepening web of science fiction madness." The description goes on to say that "the fabric of space-time literally beginning to bend around him."
I was completely engulfed in this short. I absolutely loved it! It has a great eerie vibe to it and there were some really cool visuals, especially when it came to the strange nightmarish creature effects. I also thought the whole Vietnam War setting made the story even more intriguing.

Take a look at the Mondo poster for Rakka, the bleak alien invasion short film from Neill Blomkamp and Sigourney Weaver...
Mondo is one of the last companies out there dedicated to proving that hand-drawn movie posters are still an art form, and you don’t need to look much further proof than this exclusive look at their gnarly work for Rakka. As an experimental short film that director Neill Blomkamp developed with Sigourney Weaver as his star when Alien 5 stalled, Rakka is an impressive bit of retro art unto itself, and the new Mondo poster just exemplifies the weirdness that comes with alien weeds burying a human skull.

After two Alien prequels without Sigourney Weaver, you know you're ready to see her fighting some more nasties from outer space. So check out the first film from Neill Blomkamp's new shorts project via Oats Studios. Titled Rakka, the 21-minute sci-fi movie features Weaver as one a group of human survivors fighting a resistance against crocodile-like alien invaders. The creatures have destroyed much of the world with their terraforming and wiped out our population by using us as surrogate incubators for alien young. The premise sounds like a mix between Alien and The Matrix with a good helping of The Terminator but with that movie's robot takeover exchanged for telekinetic, mind-controlling and brain-bludgeoning lizard...

The first film from Oats Studios, Rakka, is now available for streaming on YouTube and Steam. The ambitious film depicts the aftermath of an alien invasion in the year 202 0 where aliens have enslaved humanity and altered the Earth’s atmosphere.
The film features Sigourney Weaver as a fighter in the resistance. It's worth noting that she was attached to Blomkamp's Aliens sequel that will likely never see the light of day now that Ridley Scott is back at the helm of the franchise.

It's time to start experimenting with sci-fi again. South African filmmaker Neill Blomkamp is launching a new experimental filmmaking collective called Oats Studios. We've been posting previews over the last few months, but now it's time to give fans a small taste of what's to come. Blomkamp has launched the first project, titled Rakka, online in the form of a 20-minute short film that plays more like an extended proof-of-concept pitch reel. You can find it on Steam or watch the full thing below for free. So what exactly is Oats Studios? I talked with Neill on the phone for 30 minutes earlier this week to dive deep into the concept and figure out exactly what it is they're trying to do. Oats is an "incubator of ideas that come from me or come from other people," then they "put out those ideas to the audience, see how the audience feels about them.

We’re used to seeing textured, gritty future worlds in the films of director Neill Blomkamp: his Oscar-nominated debut District 9, Elysium and Chappie. Rakka, meanwhile, is perhaps his darkest piece yet: a 20-minute tour of an Earth ravaged by aliens.
