7.5 From Me
Foutainoflife6 November 2019
You've got to give credit where it is due and the Korean's have found their niche when it comes to dramatic thrillers. When you sit down to watch one, you can count on a steady pace, a healthy dose of action and well, to be honest, they can actually go a little overboard with the drama but they do it well.

In this film, we find a doctor of worldwide fame returning home after a long business trip. While he is an over achiever when it comes to his job, he is not doing all that great when it comes to being there for his daughter. He has missed her last birthday. She's skeptical when it comes to him actually showing up when he says he will but they make plans to meet up. While making their separate way to each other, the daughter is struck and killed by a vehicle and he sees it happen. The day begins a cycle of repetition leaving him to search for the reasons behind the occurrence and a way to save the life of his daughter.

I enjoyed this. It did a wonderful job of holding my interest with several twists and turns. It is well scripted, acted and filmed. My only complaint is that, like I mentioned before, they have a tendency to lay the drama on pretty thick. It can draw you in sometimes and at other times it can seem a bit over played. It's still a great film but for me the drama was just a tad heavy at times.

I would suggest this to my friends without hesitation. I can't say that this is my favorite dramatic thriller to come out of Korea but it is one that holds its own and doesn't fail to deliver. I say check it out.

A Thrilling and Intense Ride
moviebuffchick11 May 2018
A Day provides a fresh take on the "endless loop" story. My suggestion is to NOT watch the trailer... don't even read the synopsis if you haven't already. If you like loop movies and thrillers... just check it out! Even the synopsis on IMDB gives away information that I had no idea was coming during the film (I went in completely blind during a film festival).

Overall, A Day was very well-rounded. A great thriller that maintained high levels of suspense and intensity from beginning to end... even a few chuckles in there. It was such a fun and interesting ride. Watching everything unfold... and wondering what new secrets would be revealed as you got deeper into the story. The production, direction, acting, cinematography... ALL very well done.

A DAY
0U20 February 2020
A celebrated doctor returning from a high profile meeting with the UN encounters a traffic accident on the way to meet his daughter; to his horror, he realises that she is one of the victims of the crash. Then his life rewinds and he lives the day again, and again, each time trying to alter the inevitable chain of events which leads to his daughter's death. This ambitiously high concept thriller has a baffling timeline but, thanks to deft editing, it more or less manages to keep all of its juggled story elements in the air.

A story about regrets & revenge
hollandvillage2 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Three grieving men over the lost of their loved ones, stuck in a time loop trying to change the histories of how their loved ones passed on. In the midst of their groundhog day experiences, their lives are more intertwined than they knew.

Interesting story plot, but somehow I have a feeling I have already seen a familiar story line being played out in some other movie.

When Déjà Vu Collides with Karma
Uriah433 September 2022
This film begins with an esteemed doctor by the name of "Jun-young Kim" (Myong-Min Kim) waking up during a flight on an airplane and being asked by the "Flight Attendant" (played by Yuha Lee) for his autograph. He thinks nothing of it and, at the prompting of his assistant, even takes a picture with her. Then, upon arriving at the airport in South Korea, he stops to save the life of a young boy who was choking on some candy. Once again, being the humble man he is, he thinks nothing of it and hurries to meet his young daughter "Eun-jung" (Eun-hyung Jo) who is walking to a rendezvous point to meet him. However, on the way there, he notices a car accident and immediately stops to render assistance to the driver. After a little while, he also notices a crowd of people have gathered on the other side of the intersection and, upon checking it out, is dismayed to discover the dead body of his young daughter lying there in a pool of blood. Then, after wandering around for 30 minutes in a stunned state of disbelief, he awakens once more on the airplane with a flight attendant asking for his autograph. Incredulous about all of this, he calls his daughter and finds out that she is still alive and that she is heading out to a rendezvous point to meet him. Although he is quite anxious to meet her, he first has to help a young boy in the airport who is choking on some candy. Having done that, he immediately drives his car to pick up his daughter--only to discover that he has arrived too late and that she is lying on the pavement in a pool of blood. Thirty minutes later he again awakens on the airport with the flight attendant asking for his autograph. It's then that he realizes that he is stuck in a time loop and no matter what he does he cannot change what is about to happen. The scene then shifts to a young man named "Min-chul" (Yo-Han Byun) discovering that his wife "Mi-kyung" (Hye-Sun Shin) has been killed while being driven in a taxi that was involved in a fatal auto accident. Thirty minutes later he goes through the same process again and again. After a little while, he notices that, while everybody seems to be doing the exact same thing over and over again, there is one specific person doing different things. And he suddenly realizes that this person is also sharing the same time loop. So, in desperation, he gets this man's attention and together both he and Jun-young Kim agree to cooperate with one another to change this tragic course-of-events. What they don't realize is that there is another person sharing their time loop who has a totally different view of the situation--and he will do whatever it takes to have things continue as they are. Now, rather than reveal any more, I will just say that this turned out to be an entertaining film which benefited from the multiple twists and turns along the way. Admittedly, there were a couple of scenes that I didn't particularly care for, but even so, I enjoyed this film for the most part and I have rated it accordingly. Above average.

Under appreciated Korean movie
darapjohnson26 April 2023
This movie is such an underrated Korean movie and should 100% be recognized a lot more than it is. For crying out loud, only 2.5k people have rated it here on IMDb. That aside though, this movie was one of the more serious serious time loop movies unlike those which only gets serious in the end but has comedy in the middle (Happy Death Day, Groundhog Day etc). It was almost tear jerking and actors were great. All in all an awesome under recognized Korean movie.

Usually now a days, time loop movies is hard to get right, but when it does get done right (like in this movie's case), it's just an enjoyable thrill ride.

Beautiful Story, A Bit Bloody
alisonc-123 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Famous humanitarian doctor Jun-young (Kim Myung-min) often misses the birthday of his daughter Eun-jung (Jo Eun-hyung), but on May 17, he's flying home to Seoul just in time for it. On his way from the airport, he stops to help at an accident involving a taxi, but then sees another victim of the accident - none other than Eun-jung. And then he wakes up again in the plane heading home on May 17….After several repeated days, he is confronted by ambulance driver Min-chul (Byun Yo-han), who is also repeating May 17 over and over, and who also has lost someone in the accident. They team up to try to figure out how they can stop the day from repeating in an endless loop, and how they can save their loved ones…. The audience knows about the deaths about 10 minutes into this film, so that's not a spoiler. Instead, the film focuses on how the main characters react to their losses, how they try to prevent them and how they change as people in the process. It's *quite* bloody, so if you're squeamish, this may not be the film for you; but it's beautifully filmed and has a really big heart. Quite emotional and at the same time full of moral dimensions, "A Day" is simply a gem.

more of sentiment drama
m-ramanan11 January 2022
RATED 7/10 Language: Korean Source: Youtube

Good time loop story with some good characterisations.... All the good aspects of this movie is lifted in "Maanaadu". The movie was so thrilling till we get to know the reason. After that its become so dragging.... It is more of sentiment and actors did their job very well... One time watchable.

Great storyline
traciehenry25 April 2020
This movie tugs at your heart. It's well written and even the actors do an amazing job. I'm almost concerned at those who didn't rate this as a 10. Lovely concept and I watched it straight through without stopping. I truly enjoyed this film. I think you will too if you enjoy going on a ride with a cast and ending up with a lovely feeling inside.

Repeating days or hours is not exactly original in the movies, but here it's done emotionally. I was captivated as the story unfolded and I think you will be too. Highly recommended.

Sappy, Ridiculous, Overacted Cryfest.
redrobin62-321-20731128 January 2020
Here's the story in a nutshell: Some people scream, then there's lots of crying, and screaming, and crying, and a couple of scenes of racing around followed by more screaming and crying with sappy background music boosted high for your entertainment. To be fair, there's an interesting story in "Ha-Roo" even though it strongly resembles "Groundhog Day" and "Happy Death Day." Yeah, "A Day" is way more violent than the others, but it collapse under the weight of its extremely unnecessary melodrama. I sure wish this Korean trope will die as quickly and violently as characters do in their bloodier films.

An excellent rumination on consequences and redemption
ctowyi12 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This is a tough review to write without dropping spoilers, but I will try. In fact, I would also recommend not watching the trailer because it drops a huge spoiler that will rob you of the feverish fun you are going to have. Trust me, go in blind and like me you will come up for breath 90 minutes later with a big smile.

This is a mystery drama revolving around a doctor Kim Joon Young (Kim Myung Min) who is just returning from a successful humanitarian overseas trip. He arranges to meet his headstrong young daughter Eun Jung (Jo Eun Hyung) on the day of her birthday. On the way to the rendezvous, he witnesses a car accident and realises she was killed in it. And then the day starts all over again for him…

Yes, A Day is South Korea's version of Groundhog Day (1993), a time loop genre film. The most recent successful exponents include Timecrimes (2007), Triangle (2009), Edge of Tomorrow (2014) and Source Code (2011). The dynamics of the game are the same – the protagonist either uses the loop to his/her advantage (getting into the pants of Andie MacDowell as in the case of Groundhog Day), or he/she tries to solve the puzzle of the loop so that time can be linear again, or he/she feels the loop is a second chance to avert a disaster from happening as in the case of Source Code and Edge of Tomorrow. A Day doesn't differ in all these aspects, but what it does spectacularly well is that it throws not one but two spanners in the works that gives the over-tired genre a kick in the butt.

The movie switches gear effortlessly. The first act feels recycled and familiar, but Kim Myung Min anchors the horrendous scenes compellingly well. Witnessing your daughter's death and not being able to do anything about it is definitely a sickening feeling. At a lean, mean and spry 90 minutes, the movie has hardly any fats. It moves forward (or is it repetitively?) propulsively and doesn't waste time in letting the protagonist feel his way through the time loop puzzle. The character behaves like he is weaned on time loop movies and quickly gets down to the job of solving the puzzle and asking himself why he is in a loop. The premise is so compelling that it kept me front and centre, wondering how he will unlock the puzzle of the waking nightmare. Just as when you start to think you are cruising along a well-treaded narrative path, writer-director Cho Sun-Ho drops a bombshell and your eyes will grow wide as saucers. No, I won't share what it is and please don't go check out the trailer too.

Cho's previous screenplay is the derivative horror-killer flick Killer Toon (2013). A Day marks his debut as a director with a screenplay also written by him. This is a vast improvement and it put a gleeful smile on my face as I walked out of the cinema. It is not just an action thriller; it is also a concerted cogitation on consequences and redemption.

Korean style time loop movie!
Zoetrope3606 May 2020
There are many movies from Groundhog Day (1993) to Happy Death Day (2017) where the protagonist relives the same day again and again. This Korean time-loop movie is based on the same concept but explores the consequences and redemption of an act.

Pretty interesting film for the action/thriller fans
Dolchi9 June 2022
This film is about a specific science fiction sub-type. Although this is not the first film about this idea, the treatment is very fresh and we cannot help but marvel at the execution. The unique aspect of this film is that this gives all the power to our instincts of wanting to know the stories behind everyone in an important event.

There are many action scenes in the film and the film masterfully sticks to only what makes sense for the characters in real life. The main crux of the story is about a few moral/ethical questions and the film dances beautifully around every single possibility. The audience are all very well thrilled till the end and we can actually feel like we are inside the story of this film.

This immersive experience is the victory of this film. I am not sure how others perceived this movie and if they felt the twists were rather predictable. This was as I already felt drawn inside the film and compelled to answer the pressing questions behind the facade of international award winning professionals. For this victory of the film over me, I am giving the impeccable score for this film!

Incredible
This movie, done something to me, it ruined me, it took me to a place few movies do and showed me once again, how Eastern Movies are often so much better than anything Hollywood has to offer.

The premise may be a bit hard to swallow, but it is handled bloody brilliantly, with the filmmakers setting the tone beautifully midway between reality and fantasy.

The plot starts off with a man reliving a day where his Daughter is killed, but as the story unfolds, the writer's slowly leak in more plot twists that separate this from many other less-decent films of the same genre.

Everything is just amazing, from the actors, to the make-up and the way the characters are all well rounded and unique.

I cannot recommend this more for fans of thought-provoking movies.

I give very few movies 10/10, but this deserves it. I will remember for life and i doubt see another i liked as much for a very long time.

Amazing plot and we'll acted
anacozlov16 January 2023
This film is surely confusing at first, with different characters, but after understanding the plot, it's really entertaining.

I would really recommend watching this film if you enjoy thriller movies. It's well written, acted, filmed and it gives you time to really understand what's going on.

I would say that the drama is in a good amount, but there were some moments that felt like the drama went just a little overboard. In the end, for example, the drama felt different, and a little too much, but it was still worth watching.

To summarize here, this movie is a good one and it's really entertaining from start to finish.
