Forgettable

Your basic, generic "demon girl that becomes friends with humans and defends them from monsters" story. It doesn't help matters at all that this is 30 minutes and SUPER rushed. I actually thought it was based on a manga, and almost fan-service to those in the know, but I can't find any info in regards to it being a manga. It feels like they had a script for a much longer story and just jammed it into a half-hour. Some of these shorter OVA's still work as they come off as almost like a failed pilot episode, where funding fell through, but you still get a nice little introductory story. This though doesn't even have that. Something like Devil Hunter Yohko or Vampire Princess Miyu are much better choices in this same vein. Even at only 30 minutes, this felt like a waste of time.

Better than I expected.

Warning: Spoilers
For most part this half-hour OVA packs a punch, and doesn't waste any time by moving at a fast clip while keeping a fairly streamlined narrative. It's just too bad the final battle is underwhelming, even if the imagery had some creative flourishes e.g the use of silhouettes towering over a glistening cityscape. I was left confused about one story detail, centred on the lead demon girl Yama Rikud - Japan's guardian against evil demons with her giant scythe and morphing dragon - and her attraction to a classmate. It's more how her attraction to him came to be, that had me stumped. A passing suggestion of some resemblance of somebody she use to know? Midway through there's a short pause for exposition building around Rikud's character.

However it's at its best when the demonic life sucking school headmistress (who stays mostly in human form) and her minions come out to play. They are some nutty, and eerie looking monster designs. Birds with a top half of a woman, but especially the one waiting in the dark basement of the musty school storage building feeding on students. What looks like a large sea snail with tentacles, a baby's head at the end of long neck and eyeballs where there would be ears?! There are few dark moments, and wicked confrontations headed by the headmistress. I would've like to see this OVA be 10-15 minutes longer, but in the end it wasn't a biggie.
