Exclusive: When Jennifer O’Connell and Rebecca Quinn oversaw the then-titled HBO Max’s unscripted pipeline, the pair worked with Issa Rae and her production company Hoorae on series including Sweet Life: Los Angeles, which ran for two seasons and the reboot of Project Greenlight.
The trio are now getting the band back together after Rae’s Hoorae has struck a production partnership with O’Connell & Quinn’s Velvet Hammer Media.
The deal will see the two companies co-develop a range of unscripted series across genres including dating, social experiments and competition.
Velvet Hammer Media, which was founded last year, is behind series including The Big Bakeover for The CW and Empty Nest Refresh for Roku. The pair also introduced its Inside Access Program, which ensures there’s a line item in every production budget to hire exceptional Bipoc talent behind the camera and help them grow.

Horror stories don't get much more iconic than Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 gothic novella Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde, which has been brought to screens big and small for years since its publication. Horror film studios, meanwhile, don't get much more iconic than Hammer. So when you combine the two, it's hopefully a case of two great tastes tasting great together. The production company returns with a brand new adaptation of the tome, and while we previously brought you :a[an exclusive look at Eddie Izzard starring]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/eddie-izzard-doctor-jekyll-new-hammer-film-october-release-date-confirmed-exclusive/' } in Doctor Jekyll, now here comes the trailer, full of suspense and subterfuge…

John Lennon said The Beatles’ “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” features an instrument he couldn’t “face.” He was asked about the band’s post-Abbey Road musical direction. Abbey Road was a hit in the United Kingdom during the 1960s and again during the 1980s.
John Lennon said The Beatles’ “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” features a “fantastic machine.” In addition, the instrument appears on other songs from Abbey Road. John felt George Harrison could have taken a lifetime to master the machine.

The Moog synthesizer is an early synthesizer invented by engineer Robert Moog. The Beatles helped popularize the instrument by using it on Abbey Road. The book Lennon on Lennon: Conversations With John Lennon features an interview from 1969. In it, John explained why the band used a Moog.

A chapter from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, set upon a ship, is expanded to a gory 2-hour film, an idea that works better in theory than in practice
As Universal continues to find creative ways to rework its iconic monster movies in the shadow of the iconically disastrous Dark Universe (a set of interconnected horrors cancelled after Tom Cruise’s Mummy wrapped up with a loss), there’s an alluring elevator pitch at the heart of their latest offering. Rather than retelling Bram Stoker’s Dracula in full once again, why not take one chapter, The Captain’s Log, detailing his journey on boat from Romania to England, and dig into what happened to the crew members he feasted on?
But coming just months after Renfield, this year’s other novel spin on Dracula, focused on the cursed count’s even more cursed aide, it’s another idea that works...

Brutal and violent, Mike Hammer is a no-holds-barred private investigator created by Mickey Spillane and featured in novels, movies, TV shows, comics, and more. Mike Hammer is set to return to the big screen as Skydance has acquired the rights to the franchise and is planning to develop a movie based on the iconic character.
No writers, directors, or actors attached to the new Mike Hammer movie at this time, which is hardly a surprise given the ongoing WGA and SAG strikes. The rights to the character have been in dispute for quite some time. Mickey Spillane died in 2006, just one month after the death of his manager. The manager’s estate tried to claim ownership of Mike Hammer, but following years in court, those rights reverted to Spillane’s estate.
Starting with the novel I, the Jury, Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer novels have sold over 250 million copies worldwide.

Thus far in its development, the fate of the Galaxy Quest TV series has been less "never give up, never surrender!" and more "eh… Give up. Surrender". “For so long we’ve been kind of a hidden gem,” says Connie Butler, chief curator of the Hammer Museum, which opened in 1990 at the base of an office building in Westwood. In the more than three decades since, the Hammer has gained an international reputation for its talked-about contemporary art shows and culture-shifting programming, including its biennial Made in L.A. exhibition, but the museum always lacked a marquee street presence.
That changes March 25, when the final phase of a multiyear revamp will be unveiled.
L.A.-based architect Michael Maltzan, who was first commissioned in 2000 to create a master renovation and expansion plan for the Hammer, has designed what he calls a new “welcoming porch” at the corner of Wilshire and Westwood boulevards to welcome visitors. “For the first time really, we will have a proper museum entrance,” says Butler, adding that the new entry will include a...

As someone who knows her stuff, Reba McEntire could “run the world,” at least according to fellow country star Kelsea Ballerini. She’s gotten to know McEntire and thinks the “Fancy” singer is the perfect candidate to lead a country-music-powered cabinet of all-stars.

She knew she’d made it a few years later when she received a text from a mutual friend of McEntire’s that said, “Are you in Nashville? Reba wants to grab a drink.” (AP News).
The “I Quit Drinking” singer agreed and said she was “so glad” for the time with McEntire. And that wasn’t just because they were getting ready to perform a duet of her song,...

Among the more exciting bits of news at the 2022 D23 Expo was a trailer for Werewolf by Night. A one-off Halloween special coming to Disney+ on October 7, Werewolf by Night not only brings a cult Marvel character to live-action, but it also serves as the directorial debut of Michael Giacchino, the Academy Award-winning composer who wrote the scores for Spider-Man: No Way Home, The Batman, and more.
Cursed with lycanthropy, Jack Russell made his debut in 1972’s Marvel Spotlight #2, written by Roy Thomas, Jean Thomas, and Gerry Conway, and penciled by Mike Ploog. To capitalize on the renewed interest in horror comics, Russell soon jumped to his own series Werewolf by Night, which took him around the Marvel Universe to battle against all manner of paranormal baddies. Although he’s since received to the background, Russell remains a fan favorite in the comics. And if the trailer for Werewolf by Night is any indication,...

This fabulous new release of the Hammer Horror classic comes with a generous slate of features which includes not one but two separate audio commentaries. The one by Marcus Hearn and Jonathan Rigby is fairly conventional - which is not to say uninteresting - taking viewers through the film step by step as it unfolds and discussing aspects of production and stories from the set. The other, by academic Kelly Robinson, is truly fascinating, focusing as it does on wider aspects of the mummy as a character in European and North American fiction, and probing the ways in which it differs from Hammer's previously established monsters Count Dracula and Baron Frankenstein's creation, by virtue of its lack of a foundational narrative. Drawing together the cinematic and the literary, this is a real treat, the sort of in-depth material which is hard to access outside educational settings, and it adds considerable.

Those lucky enough to be at the Venice Film Festival this year have only six days before Luca Guadagnino‘s latest “Bones And All” has its world premiere at the festival. And Guadagnino’s new film is one of the most anticipated on the Lido this year, a favorite for Venice’s top prize, the Golden Lion. But the lead-up to the film has had an unfortunate slant. The film’s subject matter, about two young cannibals who fall in love on the fringes of society, relates to the allegations against disgraced “Call Me By Your Name” star Armie Hammer.

Following the success of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho in 1960-61, there was – forgive me – a “mad” rush to cash in on that film’s coattails. On one side of the pond, U.S. based pastiches of Psycho would come courtesy of Shlock-horror maestro William Castle. The gimmicky producer would rush out the psychological-thriller Homicidal in 1961 and, a bit later - and more famously - with Joan Crawford in Straiht- Jacket (1964). In England, Hammer Film Productions, riding high due to their reimagining of the classic “Universal” monsters, would likewise bring to the screen four psych-thrillers of similar temperament: Paranoiac and Maniac in 1963, Hysteria and Nightmare in 1965.
One of the connecting threads of this quartet of Hammer efforts were that all scenarios had been dutifully scribed by their “house writer” of sorts, Jimmy Sangster. In his entertaining autobiography Do You Want it Good or Tuesday?...

With the Christmas holiday hitting later this week, Tuesday is looking to be a somewhat quiet day for horror and sci-fi home media releases. Scream Factory has put together a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray for The Vampire Lovers and Tempe Video is showing some love to a trio of overlooked micro-budget genre flicks from the 1990s: Kingdom of the Vampire, Zombie Cop, and Humanoids from Atlantis. Other releases for December 21st include Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness and Roh.

Hey! Shit actually happens in this book! And those things largely validate my “get off the pot and actually say XYZ” grumblings from the previous books, which also makes me happy. [1] Once again, I’m not claiming any great powers of reasoning or insight: this is a pastiche superhero comic, and the plot beats are thuddingly obvious. They were just massively delayed for reasons that I tend to believe owed more to “I want to tell some only vaguely related stories first” than “this Other Stuff is actually important.”

After going hybrid for last year’s 45th edition of the annual festival, the Toronto International Film Festival has today announced early plans for a festival that more closely resembles pre-pandemic festivities. On September 9, TIFF will kick off 10 days of cinema with over 100 films in its Official Selection, many of which will be announced later this summer. However, the festival has revealed 12 titles already confirmed for the lineup, including the IMAX premiere of Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” and Edgar Wright’s thriller “Last Night in Soho.”
Per today’s announcement, TIFF hopes to “bring the theatrical experience back to life and continue its reputation as both a leader in amplifying under-represented cinematic voices and a bellwether for programming award-winning films from around the globe.”
It remains to be seen, however, who can actually show up to see those titles. High-profile studio titles like “Dune” were not expected to be available...

Once an upstart and now a company to contend with, Britain’s Indicator continues their series of Hammer Studio releases with Hammer Volume Six: Night Shadows, a purely generic subtitle fit for any horror film, Hammer or otherwise. What isn’t generic is Indicator’s winning formula—top notch image quality and boatloads of extra materials including documentaries, commentaries, image galleries—the works. The films in their latest set are already available stateside in more than adequate Blu ray versions—but Indicator’s work prevails on the sheer magnitude and quality of their content.

Though more ink was spilled over the potential of a Call Me By Your Name sequel than anything Luca Guadagnino has worked on since the original film’s release, it’s not entirely surprising that the director seems to be walking away from the project after sexual misconduct allegations surrounding Armie Hammer surfaced. Guadagnino has now officially confirmed he’s putting his focus on other projects.
“The truth of the matter is, my heart is still there, but I’m working on [Bones and All] now, and I’m hopefully going to do Scarface soon, and I have many projects and so will focus on this side of the Atlantic and the movies I want to make,” he tells Deadline.
He’s also revealed an expanded cast for Bones and All, which finds him reteaming with Timothée Chalamet, who stars alongside Taylor Russell in the adaptation of Camille DeAngelis’ novel by A Bigger Splash writer Dave Kajganich.

Ahead of FrightFest’s UK special screening of The Woman With Leopard Shoes at the Glasgow Film Festival, director Alexis Bruchon talks about his love of Noir, casting his brother and directing in his underwear…
Your background is in illustration and graphic design. Was making a movie the next logical step as an artist?
From a very young age, I wanted to make a movie (as a teenager I did make a slasher called Ice Crime a true masterpiece!) – but drawing is direct, cost nothing and allows you to produce any images you want. So, I started with two unpublished graphic novels. The good thing with comics is that I realised you can tell a story with very few elements… and no money!

Evan Rachel Wood is coming forward with allegations of years-long abuse against her ex-fiancé, Marilyn Manson. On Monday, the 33-year-old actress accused the 52-year-old musician of grooming her as a teen and "horrifically" abusing her for years.
"I am done living in fear of retaliation, slander, or blackmail."
"The name of my abuser is Brian Warner, also known to the world as Marilyn Manson," she wrote on Instagram. "He started grooming me when I was a teenager and horrifically abused me for years. I was brainwashed and manipulated into submission. I am done living in fear of retaliation, slander, or blackmail."
Evan explained her decision to speak out, adding that she wants to "expose this dangerous man" and "call out the many industries that have enabled him" in hopes of preventing him from ruining more lives. She ended her note with: "I stand with the...

Armie Hammer is exiting another project.
According to multiple reports, the actor is no longer a part of Paramount+'s The Godfather series, The Offer.
Hammer was announced last month as the lead of the 10-episode limited series that tells the story of the making of the 1972 movie.
He was set to play Al Ruddy, the producer responsible for bringing the movie to fruition.
The news comes weeks after he exited the Jennifer Lopez rom-com Shotgun Wedding as allegations about his personal life swirled.
Hammer has shut down claims that leaving the rom-com was due to the alleged direct-messaging scandal.
“I’m not responding to these bulls—t claims, but in light of the vicious and spurious online attacks against me, I cannot in good conscience now leave my children for four months to shoot a film in the Dominican Republic,” he told TMZ at the time.

Alexi Laiho, the acclaimed guitarist and frontman for the Finnish metal outfit Children of Bodom, died at his home in Helsinki, Finland, last week, according to a statement from his management team. He was 41.
A cause of death was not given. The statement said Laiho “had suffered from long-term health issues during his last years.”

Paramount+ is making Armie Hammer an offer he can’t refuse. The “Social Network” and “Call Me by Your Name” actor will star in its upcoming limited series “The Offer,” about the making of Francis Ford Coppola’s classic mafia film.
Hammer will play “Godfather” producer Al Ruddy.
The real Ruddy will be an executive producer on the 10-episode limited series with Michael Tolkin, Nikki Toscano and Leslie Greif. Tolkin will write the series, which is based on Ruddy’s experience making the 1972 film. Paramount TV Studios is the studio.
“The Godfather” as everyone knows is considered among the greatest movies ever made and was followed by an equally-beloved sequel (and less-beloved third movie). The first “Godfather” starred Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, Richard Castellano, Diane Keaton and Talia Shire.
Ford Coppola wrote the film with Mario Puzo, who wrote the novel of the same name on which the movie was based.

Undoubtedly, Ama Lea is one of the hardest-working figures in the L.A. horror scene. She’s a director, photographer, launched her own lingerie line a few years ago through her company Poltergeists and Paramours, and she somehow found the time to make thousands of face masks during the pandemic. And that barely even scratches the surface when it comes to Ama’s boundless talents. But if you’re on the lookout for some great horror-inspired gifts this holiday season, I highly recommend checking out Ama’s online shop at: https://www.poltergeistsandparamours.com/ to check out her designs.
You’re a Jill of all trades. Can you talk about what inspires you as a creative force in the genre space, and what it is about horror specifically that motivates you as a filmmaker and as a designer as well?

Finally, a horror shocker that needs to make no excuses! Harry Kümel’s interpretation of the Elizabeth Báthory legend excels in all departments and succeeds in each of its aims. Erotic Eurohorror meets Sternbergian visual decadence, making a vivid (and bloody) statement about classic screen exoticism. Given the full glamour treatment, silky Delphine Seyrig is striking as the deceptively congenial vampire queen. It’s a rare throwback to the beginnings of erotic Eurohorror — sex and death, together again! Blue Underground takes the leap to 4K Ultra HD and stacks the extras with key interview content, and a soundtrack CD.

I was a huge (and I do mean huge) fan of Cody Calahan’s 2013 debut feature Antisocial and its 2015 follow-up, so I was super-excited to see The Oak Room, the latest directorial effort from Calahan and the Canadian genre filmmaking outfit Black Fawn Films – a company who, in my opinion, have produced some of the best genre films in recent years, giving the much more well-known Blumhouse Productions a run fo their money when it comes to low-budget horror filmmaking; and The Oak Room is their best yet.
On a snowy night in a small Canadian town, Paul (Peter Outerbridge) has just closed up his bar when a young man named Steve (Rj Mitte) walks in the door – carrying a lot of baggage.

We have an eclectic assortment of titles on tap for this week’s home media releases, including some Hammer Horror, a post-apocalyptic television series, several brilliant modern genre classics, and a handful of indie horror to boot. Classic horror fans are definitely going to want to pick up Scream Factory’s Collector’s Edition Blu-ray for Kiss of the Vampire, and if you’ve been holding out for the definitive release of A.T. White’s Starfish, your prayers have been answered with a new Deluxe Edition Blu that also includes a CD. 12 Monkeys: The Complete Series is headed to both formats on Tuesday, and if you’ve somehow missed out on seeing The Taking of Deborah Logan, you can remedy that by buying either the Blu-ray or DVD (and then thank me later).

As most film fans would concur, the humble film ‘tie-in’ paperback, or if you would prefer, novelisation – was pretty much an essential element for movie lovers. Perhaps ‘tie-in’ is a somewhat dated term these days, but it still relates to the same thing - a book whose jacket, packaging, contents, or promotion relates to a feature film or a television show. Back in the day, the paperback novelisation had a magnetic effect, usually because it contained the wonderful film artwork or an iconic photo of its star in a scene from the movie. They proved quite irresistible and the newsagent’s rotary stands were often the place to find many treasurers. However, it was also...

‘When somebody decides to call a character Brock Blennerhassett,’ says Michael Smiley, ‘you think, well, that hasn’t just come off the top of your head, there must be something going on there!’ What’s going on with Blennerhassett, his lead role in new darkly comic Victorian drama Dead Still, is strange, timely and layered, says Smiley.
Dead Still, available in the UK now to stream on Acorn TV, is ‘a dark, funny, proper period drama set in Dublin in Victorian times’ Smiley explains. His character Blennerhassett is part of the Anglo-Irish landed gentry who’s broken away to work in the experimental field of memorial photography, taking pictures of posed corpses for bereaved families. ‘That was a big thing in Victorian times because of the British Empire being in mourning after Prince Albert died.’

As if to illustrate the hypothetical “So you think you’re having a bad day?,” Canadian thriller “Hammer” puts its characters through a Rube Goldbergian obstacle course of peril in the immediate hours after a hijacked drug deal. The pileup of disasters is such that this tale might easily have been spun as some kind of grotesque comedy. But .
The result isn’t a knockout, falling between the territories of crime meller and family drama without quite maximizing either element. But it works well enough in that middle ground, making for a succinct, well-crafted suspense exercise likely to satisfy most home viewers who find it via digital and VOD release as of June 5.
Will Patton’s usual authority is a big plus in the role of Stephen Davis, a working-class father who exudes a quietly firm if put-upon fortitude in a household it’s hinted has known too much strife.

The two embark on a violent odyssey that grapples with themes of fatherhood, family and fate. Also starring Mark O'Brien, Ben Cotton, Dayle McLeod, Lara Jean Chorostecki, Connor Price, and Curtis Caravaggio. This trailer shows a lot in it, perhaps the only way to get people interested in this, since there's quite a few colorful criminal characters to follow. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Christian Sparkes' Hammer, direct from YouTube: A father faces a personal crisis when he discovers his estranged son fleeing a botched drug deal.
