Brave Attempt
chlorophyllus22 February 2020
Anwar Rasheed's Trance written by Vincent Vadakkan tears apart the evalengical centers which is a solid first half. In the second half writer lost the track and movie starts wobbling.

In the days of multiple trailers and teasers the trance didn't reveal much. Well who wants their movie to run into controversies. Then the censorship delays. Fortunately director didn't budge for cuts and went to Mumbai for recertification from Trivandrum.

Trance - A honest attempt.

Vinayakan's title theme was the winner as it played on the drive back home.

Scaling was done pretty well all through the movie. The credit goes to Amal Neerad's cinematography, Fahad's performances, the costumes, colors. Grandeur all through.

It is Fahad's one-man show. Starting portion had a "bridge" touch to it.

The movie is pretty focused on it's subject. Was looking to get thrown into different worlds based on the trailer - did not happen. It is a very uni-dimensional movie. Nasriya has been used as trailer material. Nasriya's portion could have been built better from a script perspective.

The movie addresses the social issue in a lock-horn fashion. There is a freshness to the direction style. Jackson Vijayan's songs were good. Sound design was good.

The fact is I had super lofty expectations about the movie - that I will get lost in it's amazing layering. The movie was much simpler than that. On the other hand, it is a lot of movie. The time that the movie took to release shows in how there are hardly any portions that could have been ironed out better. From an execution stand point, it is pretty good.

If you are too religious stay away from this one.. Not every ones cup of tea.. Solid first half. Unconvincing second half and cliched climax let down the movie.... Fahad and his expressive eyes rules the movie

A psychedelic trip made with love, albeit dragged down by it's sub-par screenplay
CobertNeede5 March 2020
Trance has one of the best shot moments in the entirety of malayalam cinema. It's the scene where the film was at it's peak, only to hurdle down a never ending hill. It's not the 'perfect' in the story department, but they blew it apart technically. Every single shot in Trance is otherworldly. In a sense, even if you don't pay attention to the story, your money is gonna be well spent on the visuals alone. Amal Neerad knocked it out of the park with his godly cinematography. It's a masterclass combination is what it is. Amal Neerad-Anwar Rasheed combo was the best thing that happened to malayalam cinema this year. Anwar Rasheed has commandeered a film of a big canvas, he strutted it around long enough for the film to be 'perfect'. In a way, the screenplay dragged down a film that was worthy of becoming a classic in Malayalam cinema.

Fahadh was the limelight and he did his role justice. Viju Prasad/Joshua Calton was brought to life by his best performance in his career (personal opinion). Nazriya felt like an unneeded addition to an already spectacular cast. Soubin, Sreenath Bhasi, Vinayakan were all well utilised although having very limited screen time. Joju George appeared on screen for about 10 seconds and that is that. There was no more of Joju George in the film. I don't think there was even a name for his character. Chemban Vinod was just his persona yet again, a monotonous performance. Gautham Menon did good. Dileesh Pothan stood apart from the secondary characters as he received more screen time and dialogues as Avarachan.

Trance uses heavy display of colours. I couldn't have worded that better. Colours were popping out of nowhere. Don't watch Trance while high. You're just going to be more stoned after the film.

Trance fails hard in connecting the dots and summing up the storylines it started. Nazriya's character arc was pretty much screwed from the beginning. It almost felt that the 2nd half of the film was rushed, although that is not the case.

Trance is something that is going to be landmark in Malayalam cinema. Not because of how good it is, but because how beautiful it is. No malyalam film could compete with Trance in terms of it's visuals.

Trance - Subtext movie as explained by Abhijith Vijay
rajeshinterpreter24 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Spoiler Alert: Read through only if you have watched the movie already

At the beginning of the movie, we can see the famous Hollywood director Robert Zemeckis's name and his movie Contact (1997) mentioned in the thanks card.

As per my assumption, the most vital information regarding the story of trance is lying on this thanks card. I will explain it at the end of this answer.

Once again, I tell you all that what I am going to tell is my assumptions only. I know a lot of you guys won't be able to agree with me. So if you guys have a different explanation, please write it as another answer, so that it will be helpful for me and other readers as well.

For your better understanding, we can divide the movie into 2 Parts

Part -1 In the opening scene, we can see this quote.

It says, there is no easy path to success. You really need to work hard in order to become successful.

After that, we see Fahad's character Viju Prasad, who is standing in front of a mirror and saying this dialogue below. Note that he says the dialogue looking downwards with a sad face.

Then he looks into the mirror and smiles...

They say great directors often hide vital clues of a movie's theme in the opening scene itself. So if we think that way, we can interpret this scene that, Fahad's character looking downwards without smiling indicates he is looking into his real life and he is obviously not happy with it. When he smiles at the mirror, it implies he is optimistic about the future, and he believes he can be successful in the future. The mirror here represents a virtual world of success he is looking forward to. (I know, I am stretching it too far here, but really it makes sense to me.) This scene also establishes here that Fahad's character thinks that success is something that can be achieved as easily as reciting a quote looking at a mirror, contrary to the quote we saw earlier which says there is no easy path to success.

The story of the movie is taking place in different realities. If you see, the incidents from the beginning of the movie till Fahad's character reaches Mumbai is in fact the real-life incidents happening in the life of Viju Prasad. From this part of the movie, we can see that even though his ambition is to become a successful motivational speaker, his real life is in fact a failure.

In one scene, we can see him telling his brother his plan for the future:

Did you hear it right? "Viju's Success Juice". What do you think about the cheesy name he found for a million-dollar company!? So now it is very clear that even though he has ambitious dreams, his vision is not at all promising and not based on his current reality. He thinks that his knowledge of the motivational books is enough to become successful. We can see a lot of such books in his home by the way. I am not getting into other details the director used to establish Viju's character and his life situation. If you observe, everything in this portion of the movie tells in detail about the character and life of Viju Prasad.

After his brother's suicide, Viju falls into depression. In one scene, we see that his brother tells him that it is because of these psychiatric drugs that he became ill. After the suicide, those words from his brother prompts him to start taking his brother's drug pills due to remorse. Later he starts showing signs of mental illness(like he gets disturbed in the presence of ceiling fan, etc) and he left Kanyakumari to Mumbai. He still takes the drugs and now he is suffering from insomnia also. His past tragic life, mental trauma, depression, the effects of psychotropic drugs he takes, etc took him to a hallucination or lucid dream kind of state. That's what we see in the movie after the title Trance is shown with a voice-over of someone saying TRANCE in the background. Here ends our part1 and the real TRANCE begins from here onward:

Part 2 From now onwards, please note that everything after this is all imagination or hallucination of Viju Prasad:

Part 2 can be divided into two parts. Part a and Part b.

Part a At the end of part 1, we know Viju is in a terrible mental state. But from the beginning of part 2, he seems to be recovered from his depression or mental illness he was suffering earlier. From this we can assume he is not the same Viju we saw in the first part. So I think, everything that happens in this part is Fahads imagination or hallucinations he is experiencing in a trance state of mind. All the incidents, characters, etc in this reality might be inspired by his past life. Even it can be inspired by his own life experience or stories he heard or anything. We know his ambition in his real-life was to become a successful motivational speaker, but now when Solomon asks him to join their gang, he reluctantly says yes and decides to take the shortcut to success. This in fact, is contrary to the quote we saw at the beginning of the movie. So rest of the movie's story tells what happened in the life of Joshua Carlton (JC) after he takes a shortcut to success.

In this part, the incidents start to become a bit dramatic like his meeting with the lady he met earlier in the lift that too in a busy traffic junction and she happens to be a model coordinator and he learns the bible within a 6 month of crash course from Dileesh Pothen, etc. Even though these scenes are a bit overboard, it's still believable and logically possible. In this part we can see, Joshua Carlton achieves almost everything Viju had dreamt of. As we knew, there is no elevator to success and you have to take the stairs right. So Joshua has to pay the price for taking the shortcut. So he is hit by Solomon and is hospitalized and is almost on the verge of death. We can consider that the part ends here.

Part b We know Joshua Carton is at a near-death situation at the end of part b. So here, If we assume, after the accident, Joshua Carlton went into Coma state. But he wanted to take revenge against Solomon and the team, but his current bedridden position makes him unable to take revenge. So here also, like earlier happened in Viju's life, the hit in his head and the drugs Solomon gave him and all (Jinu Joseph's character tells this in the movie), Joshua also falls into another trance state and what we see now is kind of another hallucination or imagination in Fahad's mind. (like a dream within a dream in Nolan's Inception)

Everything happens in this part is logic-less and unbelievable compared to part a, because all incidents that are happening in this portion is controlled by Joshua's mind. Also in dreams, there is no explanation for what's happening right and this is a dream within a dream, so more chaos? So, as he could not be able to take revenge against his enemies in real life, he takes revenge against them in this imaginary world and everyone has to take orders from JC's mind.

We can see Solomon and others kind of obeying what Joshua said. If it was real, Solomon would have killed JC right away rather than obeying him. What is holding them back from killing him now? Even they had almost done that earlier.

So everything that is happening in this part b is not real respect to part a. (Not to forget part a is also not real). Even Joshua says this explicitly in the movie itself that he is not living in reality.

So here in this part b, Nazriya's character comes into the movie. But if you think, if everything happens in this movie is all real life, like some of the audience who did not like the movie, believe, Solomon might not need Nazriya's character to find out whether Joshua is faking his mental illness or not, Debbie was enough right? The movie also implies that Nazriya's character can also be a hallucination of Joshua 2.0 It can be also interpreted that Nazriya's role is a representation of Viju's brother from his real-life as well. In real life of Viju couldn't save his brother but here try to save her, who also had a suicidal history. Vinayakan's story might also be inspired by Viju's earlier life that we do not know. The movie does not tell why Viju's mother committed suicide. So like in Vinayakan's life, Viju also might have experienced that kind of tragedy related to religion or demigods in his real life also. The movie does not tell much about this in detail. We can see some flashback shots like Viju's mother praying in front of a mosque and a Christian church.

So Vinayakan's story might be a reference to some tragic incident that happened in Viju Prasads's real life. Also we can interpret Nazriya's character as an angel who came to make JC realize how his pseudo miracle works affecting the lives of common people who believe blindly.

Almost every scene in this part b is logic-less and unexplainable. You can see so many plot holes here like Solomon and team obeying JC, Nazriya's character, Vinayakan's call reaching JC, Vinayakan finds JC in the church, Soubin, and Dharmajan episodes, Nazriyas letter reaching him, how he got the money to reach Amsterdam, etc. If you see it as a normal movie, all these scenes do not make sense. Even Anwar Rasheed's worst movie Annan Thambi movie didn't have as many plot holes as in this portion. So if you saw it as a dream within a dream kind of perspective, it is understandable. Also this portion has a hell lot of Christianity references. Like JC's initials, his resurrection, Nazraiya's character also can be interpreted as Mary Magdalene, also she can be considered as an angel, etc. There might be more references related to Solomon and the team. But I don't have much knowledge in Christianity so I won't be able to point it out.

If we move on to climax, we can see JC reaches Amsterdam and from his point of view we see Nazriya's Character running towards him and when she about to touch him, we hear a glass breaking sound and the film ends there with a voiceover of someone saying "Trance".

Grand movie on an average script.
aravindstvm1 April 2020
Story of an ordinary man viju to extra ordinary paster leous. The first half was tight enough for the audience but the second half lacks some scripting problem. The filimography and audio were extremely great. I will praise the camera man Amal neerad first then Fahad fassil performance with out which this movie is zero. The director Anwar Rasheed had lost his track in second half and which is clearly visible prior to climax scenes. Perfromance wise Fahad done his best. If the charcter wise back story would developed little more enough then it will be a better movie. If you are telling this is underrated blah blah. Then I must say you are wrong. Watchable flick.I gave 7/10.

What a film ! Kudos to the team.
eldhobijuaclockworkorange20 February 2020
I was so excited for this movie and after all the wait I seen it and pretty much impressed. I mean Anwar Rasheed just nailed it and Fahad fazil... What an actor man. The energy of his in this movie is just amazing. Amal neerad's cinematography it's another backbone of this movie. All the other supporting characters played by other actors were great, they done their job neat and clear in my opinion. Music was another great piece of work in this movie and offcourse the editing... Every single cut has its own style. Overall I loved. It's a must watch theatre experience.

Trance
abrahamarun-5792324 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I liked the concept, writer had a great canvas to paint his picture but somehow the heavy impact made on first half got negated by slow second half, there were many themes, hidden messages which is difficult to decode in first watch, multiple viewings might be help, got a Lucid dream feeling after JC goes to coma, screenplay and music is awesome. Fahadh is brilliant as JC, Nazriya has done good limited role, Chemban and GVM were kickass along with good support from Vinayakan, Dileesh, Soubin.

I wish if there was a twist something like JC goes into character and started performing real miracles it could have been a mind bending experience, fantasy thriller or they might have taken route of JC establishing his own Church after recovering from coma and challenging Glorious Ministry.

Anwar Rasheed and Team, the effort was good don't lose hope, waiting for your next venture.

A must watch movie and an eye opener movie
aldreyanoemmanuel21 February 2020
Trance movie marks the comeback of Anwar Rasheed to direction after his last directed film Usthad Hotel 7 years back.

Trance portraits the life of Viju Prasad, A motivational trainer who lives in Kanyakumari with his mental unstable Mental brother. The unexpected death of his brother forces him to leave Kanyakumari to Mumbai where was transformed to Pastor Joshua Carlton, A spiritual motivator. Trance movie clearly show the usage of Relegion as a drug and as a business path where buisness and money minded people uses Relegion as a business opportunity.

Fahad Fasil asthonished the viewers with this extraordinary act as Viju In the film. This walk, talk and even his thoughts in film were one of the best moments in film. Totally it was fahad's one-man show. Nazariya Nazim as Esther Lopez also did her part well. The acting of Srinath Bhasi, Dileesh Pothan, Soubhin Shahir, Vinayakan were also good and supportive for the story.

Coming to technical side of Trance Movie. The Direction of Anwar Rasheed was extraordinary. The Background Scoring and Music by Jackson Vijayan and Sushin Syam was really appereciatable. It supports the movie a lot. The cinematography of Amal Neerad was also superb. The shots of Kanyakumari to Amsterdam was excdllent and also of high quality.

In my opinion a must watch movie in theatre. Trance clearly show the current status of society. The money mindness of people and people's usage of relegion as a business opportunity. It is also a eye opener for people who blindly believe in Relegious treatment or spiritual motivations and heal power

My Personal Rating: 5/5

Mollywood at its top gear
benzigardani20 February 2020
The movie begins with the quote "there are no elevators to success, you have to take the stairs" Later moved to"There are only 2 kinds of people..there are masters and there are slaves"and finally to "it's not the end"...Trance, the most awaited project since 2017...all because of 3 great personas.. The brilliant director Anwar Rasheed, the cult and stylish cinematographer Amal Neeradh and the one and only person who rose to receive the prestigious Academy Awards on behalf of God's on country.. Rasool pookuty... And along with them the most finest flexible and versatile actor Fahadh Fazil... When these men unite.. The expectations are much much above the horizon... Trance.. Before fdfs my finding was it's a temporary state of mind in which one is not completely conscious about what's happening around him or not in a control of himself... He feels high... After watching the trailer I had a very gut feeling that there is something unsual.. Something extraordinary is gonna happen... And the phrase"I don't live in your reality "clarified my instict... If trance is gonna lead u to a trance then u will find baptized... Trans is a fairy tale of viju prasad an acclaimed motivation speaker hailing from kanyakumari.. circumstances lead him to mumbai and later back to kochi...this journey that lead him through the trance and comes out an extremely different persona...the transformation..The influence of the most powerful and potent drug.. Yes RELIGION... The divine the Almighty presence of the saviour communicated by the middle men told as messengers of God promises to bring miracle in everyone's life( seeking revenue). Yeah.. The most legal revenue made from the public in the name of God.. That theme every writer and director fears to touch..as, they know the consequences faced by pk and TIYAAN.. Anwar Rasheed and Vincent vadakkan had made an excellent remark in the malayalm film industry.. All the frames were dynamically captured by the legendary Amal Neeradh 🔥🔥the usage of Cinibot and the synsound by Rasool pookuty are also highly appreciatable... Each and every cast had done their duties to utmost.. An excellent and exentric first half worth unimaginable shots and execution became a much and second half beginned with a bang but exploded somewhere in the middle ..all hopes for an extraordinary state had eloped..The performances of Gautham menon, srinadh bhasi, vinayakan, chemban are highly appreciable..The retarted growth of sound script became clearly evident.. There also dop created a magical cover to all the earthly faults... Totally an entirely new experience from mollywood with its stylish and class filmmaking .. But there too some of the viewers find the first half more that enough for the 2hr50 minutes overall mystic ride

A tale of two incoherent halves, powered by a brilliant Fahad Fazil! [+53%]
arungeorge131 April 2020
Trance turned out to be a mixed bag as a viewing experience. While Fahad Fazil's performance is certainly a plus point and he, in fact, elevates the subpar writing in the second half, the film is tonally all over the place and does not have a clue what it wants to tell its viewers. Nazriya's character, who arrives in the latter half, felt completely unnecessary and did not add anything to the already-overstuffed screenplay,

The script by Vincent Vadakkan offers glimpses of brilliance in its initial portions. Here, the subjects of depression and mental health are tackled through the poignant yet warm performances of Fahad Fahil (who plays struggling motivational trainer Viju Prasad) and Sreenath Bhasi (who plays Viju's depressed younger brother Kunjan). This stretch is indeed the best written-and-executed part of Trance. The cinematography by Amal Neerad is spot on too - their house in Kanyakumari will remain a lasting, melancholic memory.

Act II is when the film actually kicks into high gear. When Viju is repackaged and christened Joshua Carlton (or JC), Trance takes it upon itself to give us insights into the pretentious yet swanky world of 'religion as a business'. Add an amusing pre-interval stretch, featuring an interview between by-now popular Pastor JC and a sharp journalist Mathew (Soubin, in a rather unusual casting choice). They play each other off spectacularly well and by the time the interval card comes up, the film has peaked.

Unfortunately, the second half (replete with plenty of Biblical references) goes steadily downhill. A makes-no-sense scuffle between Joshua and his two money-greedy corporate bosses, played by Gautham Menon (who does a suave job) and Chemban Vinod Jose (again an unusual choice for this role) takes place. A knocked-out JC reawakens on the third day (just like Jesus himself) and in a very trippy scene (neon sunglasses included), proves to his masters that he is no longer their slave. The trippiness, however, doesn't carry forward. It reappears in parts, like in a scene late into the second half but by then the screenplay has already gone haywire.

There's a subplot involving Vinayakan's character trying to cure his sick daughter by going the religious route, but it's underwhelmingly written and captured. An alcoholic, weed-smoking, high-maintenance Esther Lopez (Nazriya), who supposedly embodies someone à la Mary Magdelene, should have actually been pivotal to the conclusion of what was really going on with Viju Prasad. But no, she just disappears beyond a point in a manner that felt along the lines of 'Uh, good riddance!'.

Had Trance stuck to addressing a single theme - either of deteriorating mental health going unchecked or of fake godmen selling religion for their own greed, it would have been hailed a head-turner film. In its current form, it'll be remembered for the versatility in expressions that Fahad Fazil brings to the fore. While an immediate throwback to Shammi (from Kumbalangi Nights) feels inevitable, Fazil through his expressive face and body language, makes us buy into his transformation from a struggling-to-make-ends-meet Viju Prasad to the opulent suit-clad Pastor Joshua. And while it is commendable on part of the makers to have picked a rather odd choice (of religion) as one of its main themes, I wish they'd wholly sunk their teeth into it.

  • Once the second half starts, movie begins it downfall and falters throughout the second half.
  • The theme is noval and good.
  • Performance: Fahad proved that he is one of the best actors worldwide. No words to describe his expressions.
  • Cinematography and editing are excellent.
  • I would give 8/10 to first half and 3/10 to second half which averages to 5.5 and give a .5 for the extraordinary performance of Fahad.

Technically Brilliant!!
sriramthestranger4 April 2020
The plot is about the transformation of Viju Prasad, motivational coacher to Joshua Carlton, a miracle worker. The visuals are psychedelic and stunningly brilliant. Never seen such a visual treat in Malayalam cinema. Fahad Faazil makes the audience engaged through his unbelievable portrayal of a 'godman' that after a certain stage, you keep wondering "Is this scene real (or) Is he hallucinating?" The drawback is the emotions and sympathy for the Pastor is not conveyed rightly to the audience. Apart from that, its a brilliant film to watch!!

A depressing and brutally honest masterpeice
aaronjino2 March 2020
I finally saw the film And its amazing .. Fahad fazil is the real joker he should win an oscar for this film Amal neerad That bolt high speed shot of fahad was the highlight of the film anwar rasheed What a film have you made !!! A lot of people are saying that second half is not as good as first half but don't listen to them ..the second half is also as good as first half ..its just that you need to focus to understand fahad's character at that point of time cause the movie is a journey of the fahad's character and second half focuses on the character's trance state ...and then the climax ...the climax is actually awesome and satisfying... Bolt High Speed Cinebot camera used in a particular scene was soooo amazing and that comes to brilliance of amal neerad and anwar rasheed In conclusion the film is very depressing and brutally honest and that is why it is a masterpiece ...please go and watch this in theatres

Witness the brilliance of a great making
abu-mensa20 February 2020
We can't ask for more from Anwar Rasheed and his team. Trance had turned out to be my first favourite movie of 2020. The movie is offering a unique visual treat while we shouldn't forget the contributions from background score and DOP departments. The entire movie is carried out by the shoulders of Fahad Fasil that is supported very well by the rest of the cast. I'm speechless about the acting depth and energy levels of Fahad. What an actor he is! Nazriya also appeared in the movie who simply stole the hearts of viewers. This is a must watch from the theaters. Go with your friends and enjoy the show!

Bold but baggy
Apeshit24 October 2020
The Good: Powerful performance by the lead. Bold movie on a flammable politico-religious issue. Well placed, amped background score for a drama movie. High production value. Picturesque picturization. Cheerful and promising first half.

The Theek-thaak: The premise of the plot.

The Bad: Naive editing; the runtime being too long for comfort. Exsanguinous humor. Nettly saggy second half with ample wastage of runtime and audience's patience. This flick suffers with a careless sense of impending adversity. Disappointing finale to certain pivotal characters.

Overall: Similar to the actor's 'C U Soon', this film too lacks a solid and sinister presage with the second half spent more on exhibiting acting prowess than on the plot's fertility.
