• DCI Cassie Stuart : [turns off the television in her sitting room just before her dad enters]  Hey.

  Martin Hughes : I just went out to grab a bag. I didn't forget to turn it off.

  DCI Cassie Stuart : Dad...

  Martin Hughes : I just wanted to say that, you know, I've been thinking about what we were discussing the other day. And I am genuinely sorry about what you're going through.

  DCI Cassie Stuart : [shaking her head]  I'm fine.

  Martin Hughes : The problems at work or whatever it is personally.

  DCI Cassie Stuart : My personal life's fine, too.

  Martin Hughes : And, of course, I'll always be there, you know, to give you whatever I can, whenever you need it.

  DCI Cassie Stuart : Wow, well, thank you so much.

  Martin Hughes : It's just that, um... right at the moment, I think it would be better for the both of us if I were to give you a bit of space, so I think it's best if I move in with Jenny for a bit.

• John Bentley : [standing up]  Yeah, I better push off.

  DCI Cassie Stuart : No, thank you for coming in.

  John Bentley : No worries.

  [pauses] 

  John Bentley : Uh... Look, I'm probably gonna head back down to Hampshire tomorrow, so...

  DCI Cassie Stuart : [nodding]  Right.

  John Bentley : But um... can I, can I call you?

  DCI Cassie Stuart : [closes her office door]  I don't know if this is a good idea right now, John. I've just got so much uh... crap on right now that I need to sort out and... I'm not sure starting... uh... Wouldn't be fair on you. Sorry.

  John Bentley : I'll call you, then.

• John Bentley : [over dinner with Cassie]  Well, we all mess up, we're all fallible, we've all done things in which we are ashamed. The trick in life, I think, is knowing which things we should forgive ourselves for, and which not.

  DCI Cassie Stuart : Except I'm not sure it really is that.

  Uniformed Copper : [reporting into his radio as Pete is shown on a gurney undergoing chest compressions]  Suspect is a white male, mid-40s, wearing a navy top and a grey baseball cap. He was last seen walking towards Burley Road, and the witness here said he had a knife in his hand, over.

  DCI Cassie Stuart : I think a part of me wonders if I'm just coming to a natural conclusion here. I've been doing this for... 28 years?

  [nodding]
