A hilarious look at hardline opinions
ecparsons11 December 2019
This show is excellent. Jamali, the host, takes a tour throughout some of the worlds most hateful groups, like the klan and Neo-Nazis, and brings a sense of levity to the serious issues raised in this series. He always makes a point to ask questions to these people that you want to ask in terms of their world views. Intercut, that with a comedy special pointing out the absurdity and hypocrisy of these antiquated ideals and you've got the recipe for extremely captivating television.

Maybe Vice's Most Important Show Yet
sigurdtyrfing16 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This is probably the most intense Vice show made so far. Jamali is basically going behind enemy lines as he somehow interviews some of the most dangerous white supremacists in the world while being half black, half white (something that those groups really hate since they consider it promotion of interracial love). This show is mostly focused on white supremacy, but there is one episode which focuses on black supremacy. I would say the biggest highlight is the episode where Jamali visits the extremists in Sweden. These people showcase just how illogical racism is and how much racists rely on denying reality as Jamali shows many pieces of evidence revealing that someone is the leader of the biggest white supremacist group in Sweden, but he constantly denies as if the evidence is fake when it is as true as possible. In the black supremacy episode, black supremacists definitely appear to have a more legitimate cause than the white supremacists, but Jamali still thinks they are crazy and won't side with them. The black supremacists featured are very openly sexist, don't tolerate the opposition (which is true of every supremacist shown in these episodes) and actually combine their teachings with Judaism. One last big episode is the visit to Ukraine, which shows that Ukraine is perhaps more scary in its Nazis than Russia when it comes to extremism.

I will say that Jamali is a bit of an unreliable host. He doesn't inform us too much about what is going on until about the end of the episode, and it seems like that might be an effort at dramatic effect, but I feel like it detracts from the value, especially if people think he is just being biased on a topic. Sometimes, the scenes they decided to film can be disorienting and lack focus too.

Either way, this is pretty much a must-see based on content alone and you should tell everyone about this show given the current political climate.

He's a comedian
crystalnall17 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
He never said he was a journalist. He never sided with anyone. Regardless if you think he was with the Black supremacists. He was brave af to go to all these places and show the world is full of racists and bigots. He is funny and held is tongue in many scary situations. All these critics thinking they could do a better job. Great job Jamali. Thanks for all the real info out there. Very eye opening. You kept me laughing through your whole show.

Walking Through Minefields

Jamali does wonders navigating through laser beams as he meets the extremist groups. His stand up and personality don't match. During his stand up he uses this "high pitched" voice. But out during the day his voice never hits that high pitch again. Saw all of one season. Wish he spoke out the same amount for each extremist group or not at all.

A look can paint a thousand words
southpawdog15 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy this series as I'd missed it he first series. Expecting some lame, trendy, tedious Londoner who'd be so portentous . Well it didn't happen, Jamali is a Londoner but surprisingly isn't an arsehole. Proof then that out of 10 million people some are ok.

The show is less intellectual and pious then Louis Theroux, Louis's a serious documentarian whereas Jermali's a stand up comedian.

What I like about the episodes is the openness to engage and interact with the subjects. Jermali is very expressive with his facial expressions which at times are hilarious considering the subject matter. Interspersed within the individual episodes is reflections of the subjects during stand up shows. During the free speech episode he's getting a lot of you look Muslim looks to which he responds during his stand up that he's actually a Buddhist, asks if anyone in the audience is, and mocks the guy for having ego. Realised then he's an intelligent dude who respects his audience enough to let them draw their own conclusions, before that he reminded me of a friend who used to get stoned and join groups like AA, Women against the Israeli Occupation of the Middle East, amnesty international, weavers against knitters, the people's group for concreting nature and use more ozone for better summers just to argue with them.

Jamali, Meet The Barbary Pirates
britrailblue11 May 2017
Jamali, is a witty guy, and like most decent people, he abhors racism. Unfortunately, his encounter with an EDL member who advises him that black people took white slaves (Ep. Britain's Evryday Extremism), is met with derision, and becomes the butt of a joke in his stand-up. Correctly there has been considerable condemnation of the African slave trade, which took place between the 16th and the 19th centuries. However, another equally evil trade in human beings was occurring around the same time in Africa. It is estimated that up to 1.25 million Europeans were enslaved by Barbary Pirates - black North African Muslim raiders and slave traders. There is an abundance of credible, scholarly information available online recounting this activity.

Jamali's heart is in the right place, and the show is worth a watch, however his lazy conflation of anti-Islamists and racists is disappointing though not unsurprising.

Great concept. Awful host.
bkeyton29 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I love the concept for this show. I think it's very important to see that these types of people actually exist. The host of the show is awful though. And the cutaway stand up bits are rarely funny and extremely pointless. They add nothing to the show. If the goal of this show was to seek out people with radical beliefs and use a bad comedian to mock them then they hit the nail on the head. If you were expecting good conversation about why these people think the way they do then don't bother.

more race bating bull
harrisonbrtn28 April 2020
Jamali Maddix had an amazing opportunity to bring down racism but all he ended up doing was further prompting racism throughout the show as he supported the black israelites over and over futher creating a devide, from comments joking that whites are the devil to many more. im just mad he had such an opportunity to promote peace and he ruined it.

Fell short of it's potential
brianlandino-8927314 June 2020
This show is watchable, but I cringed the whole time because the host is clearly the wrong guy for this show. Between his constant pretentious "Superman power pose", his continuous reply of "yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah", and his obvious bias, I wanted to turn it off the whole time. However, because I have a genuine interest regarding these groups, rather than mocking them like the host did the entire time, I watched it.

I would have rated it higher than 3 stars if they had taken a more respectful and understanding approach regarding the subject matter rather than joke about it.

Ignorance in all forms
macdizz118 July 2020
Its ironic that the premise is for the host to go around and confront people considered to be part of the "alt right" when really all he does is go around talking to them and then "slamming" their views in front of an audience that wished to attend a comedy show. Not funny, not confronting, just exploitive.

Notice who he doesn't talk to?
TimeFox88113 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
He never seems to venture into some Isl amic neighborhoods to ask them about how they feel about Jewish people, or their treatment of women and the LGBQ community.

You know why he doesn't.

An absolutely disgusting tv show.
roythedog6 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
When I decided to watch this, I was expecting a Werner Herzog or Trevor McDonald style documentary. The kind where an interviewer respectfully interviews someone and tries to get an unbiased take on their opinions and choices. What I got with this was some very brash and annoying comedian focusing more on making fun of the people he is interviewing rather then getting their takes on anything. As a result this has an overly political tone to it and it's mocking the people interviewed and using them for laughs instead of unbiasedly documenting their opinions. If we were going to have a tv series that tackles far right movements, the abortion debate, and other sensitive subjects through the take of those who believe in them, I certainly wouldn't pick a z list annoying comedian to do it. If this show had openly branded itself as a satire then I wouldn't be angry at it, but if you're coming to this for a respectful unbiased documentary then you're in the wrong place.

Very unappealing host
Jimmy834552 May 2022
Can't put my finger on it but something is wrong about the host. May not be his fault I think he just doesn't mesh with the subject matter. He does not pay attention to what he is doing, feels like he is just reading a script that someone else wrote and that it is all over his head. I will have to watch him in something else to decide if it is him or the production as a whole.
