Aenigma: Lucio Fulci and the 80s (2017)

*** (out of 4)

Massimo Antonello Geleng (production designer CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD), Carlo Maria Cordio (composer AENIGMA, TOUCH OF DEATH, SODOMA'S GHOST), Claudio Fragasso (co-director ZOMBI 3), Marco Di Stefano (actor TOUCH OF DEATH), Michelle De Angelis (assistant director TOUCH OF DEATH, SODOMA'S GHOST), Gianni Martucci (director THE RED MONKS), Antonio Tentori (writer DEMONIA, CAT IN THE BRAIN), Alessandro Grossi (cinematographer CAT IN THE BRAIN, VOICES FROM BEYOND) and director Antonio Bido are interviewed in this 76-minute documentary on director Lucio Fulci.

If you're expecting what the title is telling you then you might be disappointed. As a documentary I'd probably say this here wasn't the best thing I've seen because there's really no story being told. If you're expecting a documentary tracing the films that Fulci did during the 80s then you'll be disappointed because that's not really what we get. Basically we have the people I mentioned being interviewed and discussing their working relationship with Fulci but as you can tell from the titles, not all of them were made in the 80s.

I really wish this had been presented in a more documentary-like fashion so we could have learned a bit more on Fulci but the interviews jump around a lot so it was hard to get any real story. With that said, if you're a fan of the director then you'll certainly want to check this out as there are plenty of very good stories. I really liked what Tentori had to say about working on CAT IN THE BRAIN and it was interesting hearing from Fragasso who claims that the majority of the work in ZOMBI 3 was shot by Fulci. There are also some nice stories about his work on the Lucio Fulci Presents film THE RED MONKS.
