The Monkey King, aka Sun Wukong, was a central character in the classic Chinese novel 'Journey to the West'. His place in Chinese culture is immense; think of Sherlock Holmes, Superman, Hercules, and Bugs Bunny all rolled into one. He had encyclopedic knowledge, phenomenal fighting skill, powerful magic, immortality, and was an irreverent trouble maker who defied the gods themselves.
Sun Wukong's signature weapon was a fighting staff , The Gold Hooped Compliant Rod. It was an iron column 20 feet long and as thick as a barrel, and weighed about 13,000 pounds. Monkey could make it any size he wanted; he often made it the size of a toothpick and carried it behind his ear.
The "murder harp" Flynn and Charlene refer to is based on a folklore legend that goes by "Two Sisters", "Binnorie", and many other names. In it, two sisters go down to a body of water, where the older murders the younger out of jealousy, revenge, or general maliciousness. The corpse is then found by a musician who turns the bones into a harp and the hair into strings. When played, it sings the story of its death - sometimes but not always achieving justice. For the Librarians, it instead has a corrupting influence.
"It's a Trojan Horse. It works every time. Yay, Odyssey." While the Trojan Horse is mentioned in two paragraphs of Homer's 'Odyssey', the complete story is given in Virgil's 'Aeneid'.
