Angelina Jolie and her kids may as well as have been walking on a red carpet during their night out on Friday. The 42-year-old Oscar winner her and ex Brad Pitt's children attended the 2017 U.N. Correspondents Association Awards at the Cipriani Wall Street restaurant in New York City. Despite the near-freezing temperature, Jolie wore a strapless black and white gown and long black gloves, a look that brings to mind the Golden Age of Hollywood. She was photographed outside with her sons Pax, 14, and Knox, 9, who wore black suits, and 12-year-old daughter Zahara, who wore a black top and matching pants, and her 11-year-old sister Shiloh, who sported a black tux. The musical often feels like a relic of a long-dead Hollywood studio system, but it remains a genre that captures movies’ ability to create story worlds that move freely between reality and fantasy. The worst examples come from filmmakers who give license to music, color, and movement run amok; the best musicals transcend artifice and integrate songs that become expressions of pure character emotion. It offers endless possibilities, but success demands a complete mastery of the medium.
Very few current stars could learn the choreography of Busby Berkeley, Jerome Robbins, or Bob Fosse, and adapting a medium developed and most suited for the stage requires innovative direction. In translating the joy of a live musical to the magic of cinema, some things are easily lost in the shuffle.

Few things are more sublime than finding back-to-back features that hit some specific thematic sweet spot. Drive-in theaters may not be the popular viewing spot they once were, but with the overwhelming accessibility we now have, one can program their own personal double bill. Today, we’ve run through the gamut of 2017 films to select the finest pairings and tried to sway from the most obvious (i.e. a combination of Dunkirk, Darkest Hour and The Finest Hour). Check out list the below, and we’d love to hear your own picks, which can be left in the comments.

On paper, too easy a pairing: coming-of-age stories that are too intelligent to propose that this, here, is the end of a journey; characters (titular characters, no less) whose impulsiveness, close-mindedness, and selfishness are, of course, part of what makes them so empathetic; portraits in miniature...

Growing up in the suburbs of Los Angeles provided fertile inspiration for Michelle Morgan, director of the recent iTunes New Filmmaker Spotlight “It Happened in L.A.” (Click here to watch the film)
“I’m born and raised in La, so it’s a world that I know pretty well,” she said. “I lived in the city when I was a child and then I spent most of my young-adult years in the suburbs, so the city was always this mythical thing to us in the suburbs.”
“It Happened in L.A.” follows thirtysomething Annette (Morgan), her boyfriend, Elliot (Jorma Taccone), and her Bff, Baker (Dree Hemingway), as they navigate the perils of the bleak dating scene in Los Angeles. Is there such a thing as a perfect couple, or is that an urban myth?

Alex Garland has been one of the most reliable names in science-fiction cinema over the last decade, first as the screenwriter of titles such as “28 Days Later” and “Never Let Me Go” and later as the breakthrough director of “Ex Machina.” The latter was one of the big critical hits of 2015, winning an Oscar for VFX and recently being named one of the best sci-fi films of the century by IndieWire. All of this is to say expectations are sky high for Garland’s new sci-fi offering, the studio-funded “Annihilation.”

MaryAnn’s quick take… The infuriatingly tragic true story of the Hollywood superstar whose brain was ignored because she was beautiful. A stupendous tribute to a remarkable woman. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for stories about women, especially true ones that have gone untold
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
If you were crafting a parable to explain how our culture values women for nothing but our looks and denies our intelligence, you might come up with something like what happened to Hedy Lamarr… though your parable could legitimately be criticized as too on-the-nose, too absurd to be taken even as metaphor. “What’s that? The most beautiful woman in the world is also a brilliant inventor, whose astonishingly creative idea would radically reshape civilization, but only decades after her work was denied, ignored, and belittled because she...

Matthew Weiner has denied the sexual-harassment accusation made against him by former “Mad Men” writer Kater Gordon. “The allegations are not true, and [this] is a very important topic and a topic that I have devoted — it has been an obsession of mine, in my work and in my life, for like 92 hours of the show,” he said while promoting his novel “Heather, the Totality” yesterday, according to Entertainment Weekly.
“We wanted people to be having this conversation. It’s great that we’re having it,” Weiner added. “It’s a very serious issue.”

Kevin Spacey, Harvey Weinstein, Louis C.K.: As the cavalcade of Hollywood sexual harassers and assaulters grows, at some point we have to confront the inevitable — Are they scorched earth, or should these people be considered candidates for redemption?
Bryan Cranston poked his head above the fray to suggest they might. “We shouldn’t close it off and say, ‘To hell with [them], rot, and go away from us for the rest of your life,'” he said in a BBC interview. “Let’s leave it open for the few who can make it through that gauntlet of trouble and who have reclaimed their life and their dignity and their respect for others. Maybe it’s possible.”

What's up next on the film festival tour? My next stop is at Idfa in Amsterdam in the Netherlands, in full known as International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam. This is another film festival I've heard about for years, and I'm finally attending it for the first time. Idfa is known around the world as one of the premiere film festivals for documentaries. They only show and host documentaries at the festival (with a few exceptions) but that means it's all about truth and non-fiction and cinema as an important tool for telling stories from the real world. I'm very excited to be here, I love Amsterdam, and I'm happy to start watching more documentaries. I wasn't always a big fan of docs before, to be honest, but I am a big fan now. In 2017, “She’s Gotta Have It” may have more to say about men than women. Though primarily focused on the same independent woman from Spike Lee’s 1986 feature film — the sexually liberated Nola Darling, played here by DeWanda Wise — the series, directed in its entirety by Lee, often feels more focused on correcting men’s behavior than celebrating the singular human being at its core.
That’s not a damning issue, only a nagging one. Many, if not all, of the messages within Lee’s 10 episodes are valuable, insightful, and rarely so thoroughly discussed via a serialized narrative — not to mention told from a proudly black perspective. While the overriding educational value can lead to an academic disconnection at times, Lee’s revisitation is as singular and powerful today as it was 30 years ago.

In its six season history, Arrow has managed to produce a lineage of Canaries that’s starting to rival the number of Robins that Batman has accrued. First, Sara Lance broke the ice as the Canary (keep in mind that she never used “Black” as a prefix), with her sister, Laurel, following in her footsteps as the first proper Black Canary. And although neither women were metahumans and instead relied on hypersonic technology to produce their “Canary Cry,” both boasted loyal fanbases.
But after Laurel was killed off in season 4, the viewing audience was damn near ready to riot because the character is such a key component in the Green Arrow mythos. Luckily, we were introduced to Dinah Drake (played by Juliana Harkavy), whom some of you may know as the Golden Age Black Canary from the comics, in season 5. Five women accused Louis C.K. of sexual misconduct and masturbating in front of them in a New York Times expose on Thursday, and by Friday, the comedian released a lengthy statement in response to the allegations. Although he confirms that the accusations are true and that he’s hurt many people, the statement does not come off as an apology.
In the statement, C.K. treats the women as if they’re strangers he only read about: “five women named Abby, Rebecca, Dana, Julia who felt able to name themselves and one who did not.” He doesn’t address them, he addresses the story. Also, who’s the one person he mentions in trying to seek forgiveness? Himself. “There is nothing about this that I forgive myself for…” he says, turning it back to himself. While we’re fully well aware that the wait for Justice League is arguably harder to endure now more than ever due to opening weekend being merely nine days away, the folks at Warner Bros. marketing are at least helping us pass the time.
As was to be expected, there have been a select few who have already had the privilege of seeing the silver screen debut of DC’s premier superhero team, be they critics or casual moviegoers that happened to have lucked into viewing an early screening. From that, varying opinions have since found their way online, with some claiming that Batman and Wonder Woman were the standout characters, while others felt the Flash stole the show. Not having seen the film myself, I’m in no place to argue, but if such praise is aiding the Flashpoint movie in being green lit, well, then I’m all for it.
