Tense and brave
TheLittleSongbird2 November 2022
As of now, "American Dreams" is one of the lowest rated episode of Season 18, with "Imposter" being lowest. Which surprised me, as to me this was a very good episode on first watch. Season 18 was not a particularly great season. It did have very good episodes, such as "Motherly Love", "Net Worth", "The News Room" and particularly "Real Fake News". It also had bad ones, such as "Imposter", "Heightened Emotions", "Rape Interrupted" and "Conversion".

While understanding of the divisiveness that "American Dreams" has garnered, to me it is a very good episode still. Not perfect or a 'Law and Order: Special Victims Unit' high point, but much better than given credit for and a brave take on one of the season's toughest and most relevant (then and now) subjects. That it even took on this subject is truly admirable and do it in such a pull no punches way even more so. Not perfectly mind, but more than solidly.

It as an episode succeeds more than it fails. It doesn't look drab or gaudy, and the editing is far from slapdash. The music avoids getting too melodramatic in the more dramatic moments while not being too low key, it has always been a good move that it is used relatively sparingly. The direction especially shines in the character interaction in the second half. The script on the whole is beautifully balanced, there is a lot of talk but taut enough to avoid it from waffling.

The story is uncompromising, moving and hard hitting, a tough topic that was very relevant then and not too irrelevant now handled very well. It's not too simple or convoluted, with a lot happening but not feeling too much. The acting all round is excellent.

By all means "American Dreams" isn't perfect. Lopez is under utilised.

It is agreed that the politics is heavy handed but it has to be beared in mind too that it is not the first time these issues have been explored and it is hardly the only episode to be political. Other episodes are far more preachy and one sided and they also didn't have the issue of being released at the worst possible time politically. It also came at a very difficult time for the world with a lot of upset and controversy, with feelings still raw on all sides.

Concluding, very good and so much better than has been said. It's the complete opposite "Heightened Emotions" and "Imposter", episodes that deserve their low ratings, in quality and the same goes for "Sanctuary" as well. 8/10.

Terrorized survivors
bkoganbing12 August 2020
SVU joins with NYPD's Hate Crimes Unit to bring about an arrest on a hate crime with sexual overtones. A Moslem family who owned a restaurant is kidnapped, the father beaten to death, twodaughters raped, oneof them shot to death leaving as terrorized survivors the widow and the second daughter.

Gil Perez-Abraham is essentially a weak and easily influenced character. But flipping him is the key towards bringing the other two, a pair of real redneck specimens to justice.

The degeneration of America is graphically covered in this first of a two part episode. All the bases are hit, racim, xenophoia, homophobia , and the permission toexpress said feelings people seem to feek they now have with a friend in the White House.

Poorna Jagnathan shines as the shell shocked survivor widow of the massacre. Whether she gets justice is taken up in part 2.

What a mess!

It's so wonderful when agencies cooperate with each other. Wish that had happened in this episode.

Excellent episode. Essential viewing for our times.

Incredible 2 part series finale. SVU shows it is not afraid to explore complex and difficult topics and highlight some of the atrocities and hate crimes taking place in today's political climate, and the subsequent impact on stretched law enforcement and suffering communities. These 2 episodes had me on the edge of my seat. Difficult watching at times but essential and brave storytelling. Thanks to everyone involved in bringing these 2 episodes to life. Superb acting from everyone. I am a long time fan of this show and SVU just gets better and better. Love this show! P.s. Don't believe the seriously skewed rating given for 2 excellent finale episodes. People's politics and hate clearly getting in the way of their common sense, which ironically enough is exactly what these episodes were exploring.

Warning: Spoilers
Clearly Law & Order are showing their political views full force. While some might not agree, I believe this to be an accurate representation of what's happening in the real world. As the lady with ICE said "Everything is a mess".

Deportation Dilemmas: Immigrants

Two great episodes... We're watching two season finale episodes.

Again, issues that turn into gangrenous wounds. Another dark gray case.

A touching and impressive piece of writing was created from difficult topics that support the saying "violence breeds violence".

Olivia's dilemmas in the face of the trauma of mothers, sisters and wives...

Mariska Hargitay's playing power is amazing. It conveys Olivia's dilemmas and attitude in dark grays amazingly.

Guest performances are unforgettable: Soledad, Samralar, Josef, Hector

It affects Carisi, Barba, Dods and squad. It's like Detective Lopez has been in the squad for a long time.

An excellent storyline. Made me actually want to cry.

Season 18 of Law and Order SVU had some lacklustre and repetative storylines which almost put me off watching some of it (and I did skip a few episodes) but the season's final two episodes really made for some profound television.

These two episodes are a story of a hate crime so brutal and disgusting that it is sure to move your heart and make your eyes weep. This episode ("American Dream") and its subsequent sequel ("Sanctuary") are nothing short of amazing.

Interwoven with a complex narrative and several moral dilemmas plaguing modern society and the courtroom as a whole it has really helped propel this season to an overall solid 8/10.

Pay no heed to the riffraff and oversensitive right-wing reviewers on this episodes reviews page and watch it for yourself. You will surely be surprised at how well it navigates through everything. It contains drama and a lot of it.

It holds up a mirror to society and tells them something they do not want to hear, see or being reminded of and that is that racism still has truly and well not been purged from society. It's ending is both satisfying but heart breaking.

Can't say that about any old SVU episode. A thoroughly enjoyable season finale.

10/10.

Same jacket, or same person??
Anonymous61325 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Did anyone notice that Det. Ray Lopez was wearing the same jacket as one of the perps ? I noticed it right away and was sure that he was one of them, and waited through both episodes to see when he would be caught.... his voice sounded similar also. Why would they put the same jacket on them both?? Either a big goof, or everyone's in for a big surprise....

Downright awful even without the propaganda

Law and Order SVU used to have interesting cases. They used to present moral dilemmas and interesting court-room drama that used to make me ponder. Sometimes the outcomes surprised me. But no more - Trump Derangement Syndrome has hit the writers bad. Trump is living in their heads rent free. And it is blatantly obvious from this episode.

First, the virtue signaling. Olivia Benson struggles to call ICE on an illegal who's covering for a man suspected for rape and murder of (surprise surprise) Muslims. Its unfortunate that the Manchester attacks happened this week to throw their victim hood status under the bus. Second, the stereotypical white racist and domestic abuser who calls Muslims "towelheads". Hey SVU, the 00s called, and wants their racist stereotypes back. Third, the white racist calls Mexicans rapists because the President said so. LMAO. A large percentage of women who cross the border are raped by coyotes. (No not actual coyotes, but human smugglers who are nicknamed coyotes). The FBI's most wanted list in Texas and California have a significant number of illegals. The President said some of them are rapists, but this nuance is lost on SVU. Fourth Barba says everybody was always racist, but now they have a license since the election. Hey guess what SVU, truth has a way of coming out. The truth doesn't care about your feelings.

And lastly, after the Muslim woman perjures herself on the stand, everybody pressurizes Olivia to corroborate her lie! Apart from demonstrating that liberals are willing to bend the law for their feelings and that Muslims are willing to lie because they don't believe in the Law of the land (a large percentage prefer Sharia according to repeated Pew polls, the Gold standard in polling) the show tried to portray Olivia as a great hero for not committing perjury! That's your job lady!

Jeez, another show ruined by hackneyed writing and political agendas.
